A dealership service manager in Ankeny asked us last month to help him pick a garage two post lift for his highest-volume workflow: engine oil pan gasket replacement on late-model domestic sedans. That’s a job where arm reach and pad placement matter as much as raw capacity, and the difference between the right arm geometry and the wrong one shows up in labor time on every ticket. What follows is a technical deep-dive on symmetric versus asymmetric arm dimensions, with real numbers from the models we quoted him, so you can pick the same way we recommended he pick.

Ankeny dealership context

The Ankeny dealership runs a mix of warranty and out-of-warranty work, with oil pan gaskets, timing chains, and rear main seals showing up on the daily list. The service manager wanted a garage two post lift dedicated to the higher-touch mechanical work — the flat-rate tech who ran it would spend fifty to seventy percent of a shift with a vehicle in the air. That’s daily-driver duty for the lift, and the manager wanted arm geometry that let his tech land pads on the first try.

The bay was purpose-built: 14-foot ceiling, clean four-inch slab, three-phase 208V panel, and no obstructions on the walls. What we needed to solve was which arm configuration would work best for the vehicle mix — mostly mid-size sedans and small SUVs, with occasional full-size trucks. Different arm geometries move different vehicle centers of gravity to different places on the lift, and we walked the manager through those numbers before he signed the purchase order. The details mattered enough to spend an hour on the whiteboard.

Symmetric arm geometry (real numbers)

A symmetric-arm garage two post lift positions the columns square to the vehicle. Front and rear arms are both approximately 45 inches at full extension on a typical 10,000-pound model, with a minimum retracted length around 28 inches. That equal-length pair centers the vehicle roughly evenly over the columns and gives 50/50 weight distribution front to rear on the arms. Pad heights adjust through a two-inch to six-inch stack range depending on the vehicle’s lift-point location.

Real dimension: on a symmetric setup with 118-inch drive-through, a mid-size sedan wheelbase of 108 inches parks with the front wheels roughly 15 inches ahead of the front column. That’s the geometry that puts the driver door directly against the column at working height — the door-clearance problem symmetric buyers know about. For a truck-focused shop that number is fine because trucks are wider than sedans and the door still clears. For a sedan-heavy shop it’s an all-day nuisance and the reason we generally push dealership managers away from symmetric setups for mechanical work on cars.

Asymmetric arm geometry (real numbers)

An asymmetric garage two post lift rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees so the vehicle sits farther back. Front arms shorten to around 32 inches at full extension; rear arms lengthen to about 48 inches. That geometry moves the vehicle’s center of gravity behind the columns and puts the driver door well aft of the column at working height. Weight distribution shifts to roughly 40/60 front-to-rear on the arms — the fronts unload slightly, the rears take more.

Real dimension: same 108-inch wheelbase sedan on an asymmetric setup parks with the front wheels roughly 6 inches behind the front column plane. The driver door opens cleanly with more than 12 inches of clearance to the nearest column. For an oil pan gasket job — where the tech is under the front of the vehicle for extended periods and needs to get out to the bench multiple times — that door clearance is real time saved. Over a 40-hour week, we’ve seen dealership techs recover close to a full workday of productive time versus the symmetric layout they came off.

Oil pan access: which arm wins

Oil pan gasket work needs the vehicle up high enough that the tech can stand comfortably under the front of the engine, sockets and torque wrench in hand, and reach every pan bolt without contorting. That means lifting height of 72 to 76 inches under the pan, which every 10,000-pound garage two post lift can hit. The question is what’s around the tech at that height — column position, pad-adapter stack, and door clearance. Asymmetric wins on all three for the sedan-heavy Ankeny workflow.

Symmetric can work fine on trucks because the taller cab means the door clears the column even when the vehicle is centered. But on a Camry, an Accord, an Altima, or any of the volume sedans the Ankeny dealership sees, symmetric arm geometry blocks the door and forces the tech to slip in and out sideways. Over hundreds of oil pan jobs a year, that’s real dollars in flat-rate time. We recommended the Rotary SPO10 asymmetric for the dealership and the manager confirmed six months later it had shaved measurable time off his oil pan tickets.

Rear-wheel-drive vs FWD balance

Front-wheel-drive vehicles carry more weight up front than rear-wheel-drive. On a FWD compact, roughly 62 percent of the weight is over the front axle. On a RWD pickup empty, front weight distribution can drop to 55 or 56 percent. Asymmetric arm geometry, which unloads the front arms slightly, plays better with RWD-biased weight distributions and less well with heavy FWD vehicles like a loaded minivan.

For most dealership work, the vehicle weights are well below the lift’s rated capacity so the small distribution shift doesn’t matter — the arms have plenty of margin. Where it can matter is at the top end of the capacity range: a fully loaded 10,000-pound diesel dually on a 10,000-pound rated asymmetric lift is at the edge of front-arm loading. In practice we’d spec that customer a 12,000-pound lift or move them to a symmetric configuration. For an Ankeny dealership running mostly sedans and small SUVs, asymmetric at 10,000 pounds has miles of margin.

Adapter stack heights and their limits

Every garage two post lift ships with a set of pad adapters — usually a two-inch, four-inch, and six-inch stackable set, sometimes with a truck adapter that goes taller. Real dimension: the maximum stacked height on a Rotary SPO10 with the standard adapter set is around 8.5 inches on top of the pad seat, which handles the majority of pickup and SUV frame heights. Beyond that, an aftermarket truck adapter set gets you to 12 inches or more.

The catch: every inch of adapter stack is an inch of lift travel you don’t get back. If a lift’s maximum arm-tip height is 76 inches and you use an 8-inch adapter stack, effective working height under the vehicle drops accordingly. That matters more than most buyers realize. For a dealership doing oil pan gasket work on sedans, the standard adapter set is plenty. For a shop doing heavy-truck work with cross-member reach requirements, spec the truck adapter kit at the time of purchase and verify the working height meets the tech’s needs. Ask before you order — retrofitting adapters means matching thread patterns and can waste a return trip.
