Capacity rating on a garage two post lift is the total vehicle weight the lift is engineered to raise safely — not per arm, not per column. A 10,000-pound rating means the lift will safely lift a 10,000-pound vehicle. Buyers sometimes assume they need 12,000 pounds of capacity to lift an 8,000-pound truck, but the engineering headroom is already baked in — the ALI test regime verifies the lift holds through significant overload. What matters more than raw capacity is arm-reach margin for the wheelbase you actually run.
That said, running a lift near its rated capacity every day is not something we recommend. If you’re lifting 9,500-pound trucks daily on a 10,000-pound lift, we’d move you up to 12,000 pounds so the daily load sits at 80 percent of rating rather than 95 percent. For the Davenport farm shop’s 8,000-pound maximum, the 10,000-pound rating is fine — daily load at 80 percent of rated is a comfortable margin. Going to 12,000 pounds would add cost without adding meaningful value at his vehicle mix. Right-sizing capacity saves money without sacrificing safety.
Overall height vs drive-through clearance
Overall column height on the Rotary SPO10 standard configuration is roughly 145 inches — 12 feet 1 inch. Add 4 inches of overhead shutoff bar clearance and you need about 12 feet 6 inches of ceiling. The Davenport farm shop had 12 feet at the sidewall and 15 feet at the peak — the lift columns had to be positioned toward the peak center of the bay to have adequate overhead clearance. That determined placement before we drilled anything.
Drive-through clearance between columns matters for the three-quarter-ton pickup. Standard 100-inch inside dimension is tight on a full-size truck. The wide 118-inch inside dimension is more comfortable. We recommended the wide variant for this shop and the owner agreed — the extra $300 on the ticket was worth the daily door-swing headroom for his tallest vehicle. Motor spec differences
The Rotary SPO10 ships standard with a 220V single-phase motor drawing about 25 amps at startup on a dedicated 30-amp circuit. Three-phase 208V/220V variants are available for shops with three-phase service — usually a small price adder. The Challenger CL10 uses a comparable single-phase motor in the same general spec range. Both power units include integrated pressure relief and thermal overload protection. Motor durability across these two brands is roughly comparable in our service records over ten-plus years of installs.
What differs more between models than between brands is the motor location — some pump units mount at column height on a bracket, others on the wall. The Davenport farm shop had wall space for a wall-mount, which keeps the pump out of the drive-through and off the floor where it can catch spilled fluid. We spec’d the wall-mount option and ran the hydraulic line up through conduit for a clean install. Little placement details like that make the shop feel finished rather than assembled. Arm reach comparison
Real arm-reach numbers on the models we recommended: Rotary SPO10 asymmetric — front arms 32 inches retracted to 60 inches extended, rear arms 40 to 78 inches. Rotary SPO12 asymmetric — same front dimensions, rear extends to 80 inches for the extra reach on longer wheelbases. Challenger CL10 asymmetric — comparable dimensions to the Rotary SPO10 within an inch or so.
