A car restoration shop owner in the Iowa Great Lakes region called us last winter about a home car lift for garage-scale seasonal storage — three vintage cars, one project chassis, and a lift for pulling engines and drivetrains. He was building a new pole barn shop and wanted the lift factored in from the studs out. We walked through a decision tree that started at his budget and ended at a configuration, and I want to share that same tree here because it’s the cleanest way to think through a garage build-out for a restoration operation. Step 1: What’s your total home car lift for garage budget, and what does it actually buy?

Every decision tree we walk starts with money because it forecloses the branches you can’t afford. A home car lift for garage use spans a wide price range. The bargain end — imported four-post storage lifts around 8,000 to 9,000 lb capacity — runs a few thousand dollars for the lift itself. Mid-tier BendPak and Atlas home models with cast-iron sheaves and thicker column steel run in a mid-single-digit thousands range. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger four-posts land higher, and full alignment-capable configurations climb from there.

Installation adds a separate line. In central and western Iowa, plan on a professional install running from the low four figures for a bare lift on a good slab up to five figures for an alignment-capable four-post with rolling jacks, air lines, and a wheel-alignment reference setup. If your budget is tight, the tree branches you can afford tend to be storage-first four-posts. If your budget is generous, you can plan for a hybrid setup that handles restoration teardown and long-term storage on the same lift.

Step 2: Storage first or work first?

The second branch in the tree is intent. Restoration work — engine pulls, transmission drops, rust repair on frame rails — favors a two-post with symmetric arms and enough ceiling to fully raise a full-size project car. Seasonal storage of vintage cars favors a four-post because you drive on, set the locks, and leave the vehicle indefinitely. Most restoration shop owners we work with in the Iowa Great Lakes region want both, and the tree branches into two decisions: one lift or two.

If you can fit two lifts side by side, we recommend one dedicated four-post for storage and one two-post for teardown. If you’re limited to one lift, the answer depends on how often you’re actually turning wrenches. A home car lift for garage owner who works on cars weekly should lean two-post. Someone who stores four seasonal drivers and does one big project a year should lean four-post with a rolling jack accessory that gives you enough two-post-style access for oil, brakes, and light exhaust work.

Step 3: Ceiling height decides everything downstream

Once the budget and lift-class branches are picked, ceiling height forces the next big decision. A restoration-grade home car lift for garage two-post with 12 feet of rise wants a 13.5 to 14 foot ceiling for full extension of most vehicles. A four-post for storage clears full-size sedans and mid-size SUVs with less headroom, but the runways still eat two feet at the top. Our rule of thumb: don’t cheap out on ceiling if you can help it. Framing to 14-foot walls in a new pole barn costs incrementally more than 12-foot walls, and the extra headroom preserves your options for later. If you build low and later decide you want a taller lift, you’re renovating the whole roof. Ceiling is the one dimension you can’t easily undo.

Step 4: Concrete thickness and pour sequencing

The concrete comes next. Any home car lift for garage installation needs a slab rated for the anchor loads it’ll see. For a four-post storage lift you can go leaner — the load is spread across four column bases — but for a two-post concentrating the entire vehicle weight on two anchor patterns, we want at least 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi concrete under those columns. If you can afford five inches with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers, do it.

Sequencing matters too. If you’re pouring a new slab, mark the lift footprint before the concrete truck arrives and consider pouring the anchor zones thicker as monolithic pads. Some restoration shop owners build a thickened, reinforced pad right where the two-post will land, then pour the rest of the slab standard. That’s more work up front and zero regret later. A restoration operation in the Iowa Great Lakes area is a long-term investment, and the slab is the foundation of every other decision you’ll make about the shop.

Step 5: Door placement for the Iowa Great Lakes climate

Doors are the next branch. In the Iowa Great Lakes region — Spirit Lake, Okoboji, Milford — winters are hard and doors get used with wind driving snow at them. Our advice for a home car lift for garage seasonal storage setup is to place doors on the leeward side of the prevailing winter wind and specify insulated overhead doors with wind bracing. That protects the vehicles inside and cuts your heating bill on the shop side.

Door height matters as much as door type. If you’re going to drive full-size trucks or a car trailer into the shop, spec at least a 12-foot-tall door and a 14-foot door if you can. Nothing worse than building the perfect lift setup and then realizing you can’t get a tall enclosed trailer through the door to load or unload the project. Restoration shops especially benefit from the extra clearance because tall doors also give you flexibility for a taller lift down the road.

Step 6: Electrical drops and air lines

Rough-in the utilities before the slab pour. Any restoration-grade home car lift for garage installation wants a dedicated 220V circuit for the hydraulic power unit — most run on single-phase 220 at 30 amps, but confirm the spec of your chosen model before you pull wire. Route the conduit under the slab from the panel to a stub-up near the column base or the power unit location. Same for air lines: a rough-in run of copper or heavy-duty poly under the slab beats surface-mounted lines every time.

Restoration work also loves task lighting. Plan LED high-bays over each lift, plus outlets on the columns themselves at reachable heights. Air drops at each lift for impact tools and paint gear. A shop wired thoughtfully makes every project faster. A shop wired as an afterthought fights you every time you turn a wrench, and you’ll spend the next twenty years running extension cords across the floor.

Step 7: Which lift model fits the decision tree

The tree lands on a model. For a restoration shop owner in the Iowa Great Lakes region with a budget for one lift, we typically recommend a mid-tier four-post 9,000 lb with a rolling bridge jack. That gets you seasonal storage of two vehicles stacked and enough underside access for restoration work. For budgets that support two lifts, add a symmetric 10,000 lb two-post as the working lift.
