When your overhead door rolls up, its stacked panels sit lower than your fixed ceiling by 12 to 18 inches on most residential-grade doors, and by less on commercial rollup doors. Whatever your fixed ceiling number is, subtract the stack height before doing lift math, or you will bend a roof rack.
The fix is easy: watch the door open and close before you order any lift, and measure the lowest point of the retracted panel. If the number is tight, either move the lift working area deeper into the bay, or upgrade to a commercial-grade door that stacks more tightly. Either fix costs less than replacing an EV roof panel. This is the mistake that took down the potential sale for the R1T customer above, until we shifted his working area three feet toward the back wall. Myth Four: EV Weight Makes Any Portable Lift Unsafe
EV pickups are heavy. A loaded F-150 Lightning can push 6,800 pounds, and a Rivian R1T sits around 7,000. Buyers hear those numbers and assume a portable rig cannot handle them safely. The reality is that our standard mid-rise portable scissor is rated for 6,000 pounds, and the next model up is rated for 9,000 pounds. The correct answer is to match the lift capacity to your heaviest realistic vehicle plus a safety margin, not to your average vehicle. This is one place where being honest about your future workload actually saves money, because upgrading a lift after purchase is much more expensive than picking the right one up front. Buy for the trucks you will service in year three, not just year one.
Myth Five: Portable Means You Can Skip the Concrete Inspection
Buyers hear the word portable and imagine the lift as a mobile tool, not a fixed load. In reality, a portable automotive scissor lift with a loaded EV pickup on it is putting five to seven thousand pounds of downward force on a very small footprint under the pads. That is enough force to punch through a marginal slab or crack an unreinforced pour. Concrete inspection is not optional just because the lift is not bolted down.
We recommend a minimum four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with proper reinforcement for any mid-rise portable, and six inches for any 9,000-pound model regularly lifting EV pickups. Those two additions handle everything unique about EV work.
