Check the concrete first — thickness and condition matter more than anything
A 2 post car lift is only as good as the slab it’s bolted to. Manufacturers specify 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum, and most farm shops built in the last thirty years have that. Older shops, particularly farmstead outbuildings converted to garages, sometimes have 3 inches or less, and that changes what lift can go in. Before you order, measure the slab thickness by drilling a small test hole at the corner or asking whoever poured it if the records still exist somewhere in a filing cabinet.
Slab condition matters just as much as thickness. Cracks near where the columns will bolt down are a problem. Cracks under the columns can spread when the anchor bolts load, and cracks anywhere in the lift footprint compromise the safety of the install. If the slab has surface cracks or spalling, we recommend a concrete inspection before ordering. Measure ceiling, door width, and drive-through clearance
Three measurements decide whether the lift you want will fit. Ceiling height determines whether you can run an overhead safety bar or need a baseplate model. 11 feet is a comfortable overhead floor, 10 feet is tight but workable with a low-ceiling variant, and under 10 feet forces a baseplate model. Door width determines whether the columns come through standing up. A 7-foot shop door handles a standard column on a dolly, and anything narrower needs planning ahead of freight day.
Drive-through clearance, meaning the space between the columns after install, needs to be wider than your widest vehicle plus a foot on each side for arm swing. On a farm shop where the grain truck might come in for a fluid service, that width can be tight, and it’s worth measuring the truck’s actual width before you commit to a column spacing. Some 2 post car lift models have wider drive-through than others, and if you know your widest vehicle you can spec appropriately. Confirm the electrical service you have (or plan the run)
A 2 post car lift needs a 220-volt single-phase circuit, occasionally 208 or 240, but the rule of thumb is a 20 to 30 amp 220V drop. Most farm shops have 220 available because the ag equipment already uses it, but the outlet may not be in the right place for the lift. Plan the run before you install the columns, because after the lift is bolted down it’s harder to work above the motor with a fish tape and conduit.
Some farm shops don’t have 220 in the shop building. If yours doesn’t, factor that into the purchase decision, since running a new circuit from the main panel could add several hundred dollars of electrical work, depending on distance and whether you do the labor yourself or hire it out. Match capacity to the actual vehicle mix
For a farm shop that lifts pickups, SUVs, and the occasional ranch-hand truck, a 10,000-pound 2 post car lift covers 95 percent of what you’ll ever put on the arms. A 3/4-ton diesel with a service body pushes toward 8,500 pounds curb, and that leaves margin for a passenger with tools. If your shop lifts three-quarter ton and one-ton pickups regularly and occasionally a light-duty grain truck under 12,000 pounds, step up to a 12,000-pound lift for the safety margin and don’t second-guess.
The mistake we see most often is a farm-shop owner buying a 15,000-pound lift because bigger is better, and then only using 60 percent of the rated capacity for the next ten years. The extra capacity costs freight, floor space, and column weight that makes install harder. Right-size the lift for the vehicles you actually see, not the vehicles you might see once every few years when a friend brings something odd over. Symmetric vs asymmetric — which one for a farm shop
This is the question most first-time farm-shop buyers spend the most time on, and the answer for most farm shops is symmetric. Here’s why. On a symmetric 2 post car lift, both arms are the same length and the vehicle sits centered between the columns. That means techs (and farm-shop techs are often the owner and one or two family members, not a professional crew) can walk around the vehicle equally on both sides without dodging a column at any point.
Asymmetric works better in shops where door clearance matters constantly, like a dealership service bay where techs are climbing in and out of the vehicle throughout the job. Farm shops mostly do wheel-off, floor-under, and fluid work where the door doesn’t need to open once the vehicle is up. Symmetric is faster to load, faster to unload, and easier on farm shops that lift a wide variety of vehicles across a week. Twelve months in, do a full inspection with the manual open next to you and check every item on the annual checklist.
