A European-marque specialty shop in northeast Iowa called us last October after their car lift arrived on a freight truck with no forklift plan, no dock, and no idea how heavy the crate actually was. They’d ordered the lift from an online seller who described it as “lift-gate delivered,” which the owner interpreted as “the driver will unload it.” That is not what lift-gate delivery means, and the misunderstanding cost him a full workday and $400 in emergency forklift-rental fees. This article is the myth-busting piece we wish someone had handed him before he clicked buy. If you’re a European specialty shop doing transmission work and thinking about a new lift, read every mistake in this article and avoid all of them.

Myth One: Lift-Gate Delivery Means Unloaded to the Floor
The biggest myth in the online-lift market is that “lift-gate delivery” gets the crate off the truck and onto your shop floor. It does not. Lift-gate delivery means the driver will lower the pallet from the truck bed to ground level using a hydraulic tailgate. That’s it. The driver will not move the pallet inside your building. The driver will not break down the crate. The driver will not help you position the lift components. Once that lift-gate reaches the ground and the pallet is on your driveway or parking lot, the freight company’s job is done.
A typical two-post car lift crate weighs 1,600 to 2,200 pounds and is roughly 8 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall. You are not moving that with three guys and a hand cart. You need a forklift with at least 3,000 pounds of capacity, or you need pallet jacks and a smooth flat surface between the driveway and the install spot. Our northeast Iowa customer had neither. When the truck pulled up, he stood there watching a very heavy crate sit on his driveway for three hours until the local rental yard could deliver a forklift.
Myth Two: You Can Handle the Columns With Two People
A two-post car lift has two columns, each weighing 500 to 900 pounds depending on the model. Individually a column can be tilted and walked with two strong people using column dollies, but nobody who has actually done it likes the process. The safer, faster approach is a forklift with a boom or fork extensions, taking each column vertical directly out of the crate and setting it in place near its anchor location.
The European shop tried to walk the columns manually because they’d already spent the emergency forklift budget. One column tipped and gouged the shop floor. The other one they eventually walked with three techs and a moving strap, but it took two hours per column and left everyone exhausted before install even started. A forklift on the crate for the full unload and staging costs $150 to $250 in Iowa markets and saves half a day of labor. Budget it every time.
Myth Three: The Freight Company Will Handle Damage Claims Easily
Freight damage on lift shipments happens more often than shop owners expect. Forklift forks puncture crates at cross-docks. Straps loosen and columns shift during transit. Powder coat scrapes off. Baseplates bend. And every one of those problems becomes a fight with a freight carrier who assumes you accepted the shipment in the condition it arrived. If you sign the delivery receipt without inspecting the crate, most carriers consider the shipment accepted and clean.
The rule is: before you sign anything, walk the entire crate. Photograph any dent, scrape, puncture, or shifted band. Note every defect on the driver’s paperwork and take a photo of the noted paperwork before the driver leaves. Only then sign. Our European specialty shop signed clean, then discovered a bent baseplate the next day, and the freight claim took eleven weeks to resolve — during which the car lift sat unusable in a corner because the baseplate couldn’t be anchored without repair. Sign carefully, or don’t sign.
Myth Four: A Standard Shop Door Fits Any Lift Crate
Most shop overhead doors are 10 or 12 feet wide, which sounds like plenty of room until you try to walk a 3-foot-wide crate on a pallet jack through a doorway with a 4-inch threshold and a 6-inch height limit under the door track. The pallet jack rides on 3-inch wheels. The threshold catches them. The lift crate has to be broken down outside if the threshold isn’t ramped or if the crate’s overall height exceeds the door opening.
Measure your door opening — width, height, and threshold — before you order. If any dimension is tight, plan on breaking down the crate outside and carrying columns and baseplates in individually with the forklift. This is another item that adds 45 minutes to install day if it’s not planned for. The northeast Iowa shop had a 10-foot door with a 4-inch threshold. The pallet jack got hung up. Two techs muscled the crate over the threshold and scraped up the shop’s freshly poured floor in the process. Preventable with one measurement.
Myth Five: The Install Guy Will Bring Everything He Needs
Professional installers do bring most of what they need — anchor drills, torque wrenches, plumb tools, and load-testing weights. But they don’t bring your compressor, your 220V drop, or your concrete slab. The install can’t start until those items are present and working. Our European shop had a compressor that couldn’t keep up with the anchor drill and didn’t have a 220V outlet within 40 feet of the install location. We spent the morning of install day running a heavy extension cord and swapping compressors before we could touch the car lift.
Ask your installer up front: what do I need to have ready before you arrive? A good installer will send you a one-page checklist. Ours does. Anything on that checklist you don’t have, sort out before the truck rolls. Every hour lost to prep on install day is an hour of shop-tech labor and lift-install labor spinning in a parking lot instead of installing a lift. That math never favors the shop owner.
Myth Six: Transmission Work Doesn’t Need Special Lift Considerations
European specialty shops doing transmission service — DSG, ZF 8-speed, torque-converter work on BMW and Mercedes — need lift geometry that clears the transmission tunnel and doesn’t foul the exhaust or the drive-shaft when the transmission drops. A tight symmetric two-post can make transmission work harder because the arms sit too far under the vehicle. An asymmetric two-post with longer front-arm reach lets the transmission come out cleanly on a transmission jack.
Height matters too. Full-rise on a commercial two-post is typically 71 to 74 inches, and dropping a European transmission usually needs the jack under it with 50 to 60 inches of clearance below the pan. That means you need a car lift that reaches full commercial rise, and you need a transmission jack rated for the weight of the unit you’re dropping. Our European shop had a 900-pound floor jack rated for engines but not designed for transmission work with a saddle. We suggested a proper transmission jack. Two months later they wrote us a note saying it changed their whole workflow.
