A rural farm shop owner outside Marion called us last fall about installing his first lift, and the specific job he wanted to do on it was CV axle and half-shaft replacement on his son-in-law’s daily-driver Subaru, his own three-quarter-ton pickup, and the occasional neighbor’s SUV. We walked his shop, measured his slab, and handed him a pre-purchase checklist for drive on auto lifts that focused specifically on safety details he wouldn’t have thought to verify. Anyone buying a drive-on for the first time in the Marion area or anywhere else should walk through this list before they sign a quote. This is what we cover with every farm-shop and home-garage buyer.

Verify ALI Certification Before Anything Else

The single most important line item on our checklist is ALI Gold Label certification. Drive on auto lifts sold in the US are supposed to meet ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards, but not every lift on the market actually carries the gold sticker. A lift with the sticker has been third-party tested for load capacity, safety-lock function, and cycle life. A lift without it might be perfectly safe or might not — you have no way to tell from a spec sheet alone.

The reason this matters more on a farm shop than on a commercial one is that farm shops rarely get audited by an insurance carrier, so the owner is the only line of defense. We tell every Marion-area buyer to insist on ALI Gold and to walk away from any deal that says the certification is pending or coming soon. Rotary, Challenger commercial, BendPak, and Atlas home-garage models all have gold-certified lines. Anything outside that list needs extra scrutiny.

Slab Thickness And Concrete Age

The next checklist item is the slab under the lift. Manufacturer install manuals for 9,000 to 14,000 lb drive on auto lifts require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi concrete, and many spec four and a half or five inches for the heavier models. Concrete also needs to be cured — most manuals require 28 days minimum before anchors go in, and 90 days is safer if the slab is fresh. This farm shop’s floor was a fifteen-year-old five-inch pour, which is ideal.

If the slab is thinner or newer than the manual requires, the options are to wait for it to cure, saw-cut and re-pour the specific area under the columns, or move to a lift with a lower anchor load. We do site walks on every install we book, so if a customer isn’t sure what they have under the epoxy, we bring a core sampler and check. Trying to install a drive-on on an undersized slab is one of the failure modes we see most often when someone else did the install.

Safety Lock Ladders And Lock Pitch

Every drive-on 4-post has mechanical safety locks that engage into notches on the columns. On the models we sell, those notches sit at roughly two to two-and-a-half inch intervals up the column. That means the operator can set the lift at any of a dozen or more working heights, not just fully raised or fully lowered. For CV axle and half-shaft work specifically, that flexibility is a real safety win — the operator can set the lift at exactly the working height where the axle is comfortable and the technician isn’t reaching overhead.

What the checklist asks buyers to verify is that all four column locks engage simultaneously when the operator drops the pin. Any drive-on that engages three of four cleanly but hangs up on the fourth needs immediate service. Uneven lock engagement means one column carries more load than the others, which is how cross-tubes bend and cables wear early. Our install crews test lock synchronization on every unit before we sign off, and we recommend home-shop owners test it themselves during the monthly walk-around.

Cable Sheave Guards And Cable Inspection

Drive on auto lifts use steel cables running over sheaves at the top of each column. Cable and sheave failures are rare but they are the single most consequential failure mode on a 4-post because a cable break drops one corner of the vehicle. That is why every ALI-certified lift has redundant safety locks — the locks are the belt to the cable’s suspenders. The checklist item is verifying that the lift includes cable guards over each sheave and that the cable specification matches the manual.

On the maintenance side, cables need visual inspection every month and a full torque check on tension nuts every six months. We include the torque wrench spec sheet with every install, and we come back for a paid six-month tune-up if the customer wants us to. For farm shops that don’t want to do that inspection themselves, our service crew covers the Marion area regularly and can add the lift to a route stop.

Anchor Torque And Anchor Pattern

Column anchors on drive on auto lifts are usually 3/4-inch wedge anchors set into 5-1/2-inch holes drilled straight through the slab. The install manual specifies exact torque values, usually between 110 and 150 foot-pounds depending on model. Under-torqued anchors let the column rock and eventually crack the concrete around the bolt. Over-torqued anchors strip and lose holding power. Getting this right is 60 percent of a safe install.

Our crews use calibrated torque wrenches on every anchor and record the values on a sheet we leave with the customer. If you are considering a DIY install to save money, the anchor step is where we would push hardest to say let a certified installer do it. The rest of the install is manageable with the manual and a friend. The anchors are the difference between a lift that stays put for twenty years and one that shifts in the first year.

Electrical, Phase, And Disconnect

Power hookup is the last thing that gets done and the first thing that gets skipped inspection on. Drive on auto lifts run on 208 or 240 volt single-phase for home and light-commercial models. The circuit needs a dedicated breaker sized to the lift motor, a local disconnect within sight of the lift, and grounding to code. Farm shops often have older subpanels wired without local disconnects, so we specify one on every install even when the customer says the breaker panel is close enough.

The reason for the disconnect is that when a technician is under the lift and someone hits the power switch, that switch needs to be right there where the technician can lock it out. A breaker panel in another room does not count. This checklist item costs about a hundred dollars in materials and an hour of electrician time, and it prevents the worst class of shop accident.

Documentation, Manual, And Owner Training

The last checklist item is paperwork and training. Every lift we install ships with an owner manual, an install checklist signed by our lead installer, and a laminated safety card that hangs on the column. We also walk the owner through a first raise and lower with a vehicle on the lift, so they have muscle memory for the operating sequence before we drive away. If a supplier offers a lift with no manual, no install documentation, and no on-site training, that is a red flag for both safety and resale value later.
