When a European-marque specialty shop in southwest Iowa called us last spring about arm restraint chatter on their garage two post lift, we found something that surprises most owners: the restraints weren’t broken. They were doing exactly what the manufacturer designed them to do. The problem was a myth the shop’s owner had been carrying around for years, and it’s the same myth we hear at least once a month. It’s the difference between a lift that catches a slipping vehicle and one that quietly rides over the restraint at the wrong moment.

What arm restraints actually do on a two-post lift

Arm restraints are the small gear-and-pin assemblies at the base of each swing arm. Their job is to keep the arms from rotating out of position after you’ve set your pads under the vehicle. On a modern lift, restraints engage automatically the moment the arms leave the ground under load. That’s the design: as soon as the arm sees weight, the restraint pin drops into a gear tooth and locks the arm’s rotational position.

What restraints do NOT do is prevent your pad from slipping. They lock rotational position, not the vehicle’s connection to the rubber. If your pad walks off the pinch weld, the restraint has nothing left to hold. Restraints work with correct pad placement — they never replace it. We see restoration shops get this wrong because European cars have complicated jack points, thin rocker panels, and factory-installed sill covers that hide correct pad location. The urge to nudge the arm a quarter inch after the car is up is exactly what defeats the whole restraint system. On any lift, never move an arm under load. If it needs to move, lower the car, reposition, and lift again.

The myth: restraints engage at every height

The most common myth about a garage two post lift is that arm restraints somehow lock harder the higher you go. They don’t. On virtually every gear-driven restraint system built in the last twenty years, the pin engages a single tooth on a fixed gear. That engagement happens at ground level or a few inches up. Above that, the restraint is just holding the position it locked into at initial load.

This matters because owners who believe the myth think a slow, careful lift somehow “seats” the restraint. It does not. If your pad was misaligned when you left the ground, the restraint locked a bad position, and every subsequent inch of travel just carries that mistake higher. The correct process is to lift the vehicle two or three inches, stop, get out from underneath, walk around all four pads, and confirm they’re square on the manufacturer’s jack points. Only then do you continue up to working height. How safety-cam engagement really works

Separate from arm restraints, a garage two post lift has safety cams — the mechanical locks that catch each carriage at intervals as the lift climbs. On most Rotary and Challenger designs you’ll hear them click every three to six inches. That clicking is the cam ratcheting past a tooth on the column ladder. It is not the lift “locking in” continuously; it’s the lift passing through a series of catch points.

To actually rest the vehicle on the safeties, you lift slightly past the desired height, then lower the lift onto the nearest cam engagement. The hydraulic system relieves, the cam takes the load, and now the vehicle is mechanically supported — not hanging on fluid pressure. This is the correct working position, and it’s how every ALI-certified restoration shop we work with holds a car during long jobs. Skipping this step is one of the most common mistakes we see on European specialty work, where a tech may be under the car for hours doing metal repair or brake line fabrication. Fluid pressure alone is not a safety system. The cam is.

Common failure modes on European specialty lifts

European cars stress a garage two post lift in specific ways. Long wheelbases push the front pad forward and the rear pad rearward, which loads the arm-restraint gear at its outermost tooth. Over years, that outermost tooth wears faster than the inner teeth. We’ve pulled restraint gears off ten-year-old European specialty shop lifts and found the outer three teeth rounded while the inner five were still crisp.

Second failure mode: pin springs. The restraint pin is spring-loaded to drop into the gear. Springs weaken. In a shop that lifts and lowers thirty times a day, a weak spring may not fully seat the pin, and the restraint appears engaged when it’s only half-locked. Testing is easy — with the lift empty, wiggle each arm firmly by hand. If it moves more than a quarter inch, the restraint needs service. Third mode: contamination. Undercoating overspray, road salt, and shop dust cake up in the gear cavity. Restoration shops that do a lot of metal fabrication should blow out the restraint housings quarterly. Why gear-on-gear cams matter for restoration work

If you’re specifying a new garage two post lift for restoration or European specialty work, look hard at the cam design. There are two common approaches: gear-on-gear (a rotating cam that engages a fixed gear on the column) and pawl-on-ladder (a spring-loaded pawl that catches teeth cut into the column itself). Both work. Gear-on-gear tends to be quieter and less prone to false engagement when the ladder teeth get dirty, which happens fast in a metal-fab environment.

Inspection routine every ninety days

Every ALI-certified lift ships with an inspection schedule. Most owners glance at it and file it. If you want your garage two post lift to catch a slipping vehicle in the one moment it matters, the inspection is not optional. Every ninety days: raise the empty lift to eye level. Manually engage each arm restraint by rotating the arm — you should hear and feel a positive click. Rotate the other direction — the restraint should hold. Repeat with each pad extension pulled out different distances, because restraints can behave differently at different arm angles.

Second check: cable and chain tension. On a chain-drive lift, uneven tension means one carriage climbs faster than the other, which puts the vehicle at an angle and stresses arm restraints unevenly. On a cable-drive lift, cables stretch — check for even sheave engagement. Third check: safety-cam function. With the lift empty, raise to working height, then attempt to lower without disengaging the safety. The lift should not move. If it does, the cam is not seated. Any of these findings mean the lift comes out of service until we or another qualified technician looks at it.

When to replace arm restraints instead of adjusting

Restraint gears are wear parts. Most manufacturers list them as service items with a fifteen- to twenty-year expected life, but shop volume matters far more than calendar age. A restoration shop cycling a garage two post lift fifteen times a day wears restraints twice as fast as a home garage cycling once a week. The signal to replace isn’t age — it’s play. If any arm can be moved more than a quarter inch by hand with the restraint engaged, the gear teeth or the pin are worn beyond safe tolerance.

Adjustment is often a myth of its own. Some owners try to shim, bend, or otherwise adjust a worn restraint back into spec. Don’t. Restraints are designed as replaceable units, and every major manufacturer sells rebuild kits for a reasonable price.
