The rural farm shop owner outside Cedar Rapids who called us in October wanted a garage two post lift for wheel bearing service on his own equipment — a mix of pickups, a service truck, a couple of trailers, and the farm’s small utility vehicles. His question was simple: what does he need to check before he calls back to order? We turned that call into a pre-purchase checklist that we now send to every rural farm shop buyer before they place an order. Rural shops have different constraints than a suburban home garage or a city commercial shop — different ceilings, different power situations, different slab histories, and freight delivery challenges that town buyers never think about.

Measure your ceiling clearance twice

Ceiling clearance is the pre-purchase measurement most farm shops get wrong. Not because they can’t measure — farm shop owners measure things for a living — but because they measure the wrong point. The number that matters for a garage two post lift is the lowest structural obstruction anywhere in the intended lift zone, not the peak of the ceiling. A pole barn with a 14-foot peak might have a purlin, a light, or a duct crossing at 11 feet at the point where you’d raise a vehicle.

Measure the lowest point twice. Once with a tape measure or laser to structural. Once with a broom handle held vertically — you sweep it through the intended lift zone and it stops at whatever the actual low point is, including any wiring, plumbing, or storage rails you forgot were there. That second measurement is the one that determines whether you can run an overhead-crossbar lift or need to go baseplate. In our experience, roughly 40 percent of rural farm shops we survey have a low point at least 6 inches below what the owner remembered before we drove out. Measure the real number before you spec any lift.

Door swing and workflow around the lift

Door swing in a rural shop usually means two things: the vehicle’s own doors need to open with the vehicle raised, and any large barn doors or overhead doors need to clear the lift structure. Farm shops sometimes have secondary side doors that swing into what would become the lift zone. Check that. Also check whether your welder cart, tire cart, parts washer, or engine hoist has to move to make room for the lift, and if so, where it goes.

Workflow: on a garage two post lift, you approach the lift head-on, drive between the columns, and stop centered on the arms. That means the driveway path to the lift needs 24 to 28 feet of clear approach depending on the vehicle. Rural shops often have vehicles stored in the same building — a tractor parked between the door and the intended lift, or a project vehicle occupying the approach. Map the approach path before you buy. If the lift means you have to move a project car every time you want to raise a truck, you’ll stop using the lift within a year. Workflow beats spec sheets. The best lift is the one you can drive onto without moving anything else.

Slab thickness for farm-truck weights

Farm shop slabs vary wildly. Some rural shops were poured with the original farmstead’s outbuilding — could be 1955 or 1985 or 2015. Some are 3 inches, some are 6 inches, some are actually not poured concrete at all but a concrete overlay on old slab or dirt. Manufacturer spec for most 10K lifts is 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete. For a 12K lift you want 4.25 inches at 3,500 PSI.

If you don’t know your slab, there are two ways to find out. A structural engineer can pull a core sample and lab-test it — most accurate, but overkill for a home shop budget. A cheaper approach: drill an exploratory hole where a column would land, measure depth with a wire, and eyeball the concrete quality. If the drill bites hard and the concrete looks clean, you probably have 4 inches of decent structural slab. If the drill sinks fast or hits dirt at 3 inches, you have a problem. For a garage two post lift on a suspect slab, we sometimes spec a reinforced concrete pad — just the lift footprint — poured over or replacing the existing slab. It’s more work but it’s honest and the anchor performance is right. Skipping slab verification is how anchors pull out three years later.

Capacity choice for wheel bearing service

Wheel bearing service is one of the most demanding tasks a farm shop does on a lift. You raise the vehicle, remove the wheels, and often need to hammer, press, or torque on the hub while the vehicle is up. That means the lift is under load, holding steady, for potentially hours. Farm trucks are heavy — a loaded 3/4-ton with a bed full of tools can hit 8,500 to 9,500 pounds. A dually with a diesel and a tool box is well past 10,000.

For a mixed farm fleet — pickups, half-tons, 3/4-tons, and occasional dually — a 12K garage two post lift is the right call. It gives you margin over the heaviest expected vehicle and doesn’t stress the hydraulic system during long-hold bearing jobs. If you’re a lighter operation — passenger vehicles and half-tons only — 10K is fine. Do not spec 9K for a farm shop. The margin is too thin, and any future vehicle purchase pushes you over spec. Buying capacity you might not need is cheap insurance; realizing your lift can’t hold your new work truck is expensive. Every farm shop we’ve worked with in the last five years has gone 12K, and none of them have regretted it. Some have regretted going smaller earlier in their equipment history.

Power requirements at rural shops

Rural shops often have limited electrical infrastructure. A garage two post lift needs either 220V single-phase (most home-garage and light commercial lifts) or 220V/230V three-phase (some heavy commercial models). Most farm shops have 220V available but may need a dedicated circuit. Check your panel capacity, run length from panel to lift, and whether you have space for a new breaker. If you don’t, an electrician’s cost to add capacity is part of the lift’s total install cost.

Also verify amperage. Most 10K two-post lifts draw 20 amps under load. A 12K may draw 30. Sizing the circuit right matters — undersize it and you’ll trip breakers during heavy jobs; oversize it and you may have installed the wrong gauge wire. We recommend running the numbers with an electrician who has installed automotive lifts before, not just any residential electrician. Rural electrical work often involves long runs from a farmstead’s main panel, and voltage drop over 100+ feet of wire can be significant. Undersized wiring shows up as slow lift speed and occasional motor overheating. Get the wire size right the first time. It’s the cheapest part of the whole project to do correctly and the most annoying to redo.

Baseplate vs overhead for old pole barns

Old pole barns almost always favor baseplate designs. The reason is simple: overhead lifts need clear vertical space above the crossbar, and pole barn ceilings are full of horizontal purlins, cross-bracing, and utility runs at exactly the wrong heights. If you’ve got a pole barn built before 2000 with an original ceiling, baseplate is the default choice.

Newer pole-barn shops with clean truss designs may work for overhead. Post-frame buildings from the last decade often have 12 to 14 foot clear ceilings inside the trusses, which is enough for an overhead garage two post lift. Older pole barns typically have 10 to 11 foot working ceilings with obstructions bringing that down further. The baseplate hose across the floor is the trade-off — you have a low-profile channel to drive over. In our experience, farm shop owners barely notice the baseplate hose after the first week. It sits an inch off the floor, painted safety yellow, and becomes part of the shop’s landscape. If your pole barn ceiling has any doubt at all, spec baseplate. It’s the safer, cheaper-to-install choice for the majority of rural setups.

Delivery to rural Iowa addresses

Rural delivery is the pre-purchase issue farm shop buyers underestimate most. A garage two post lift ships on a pallet weighing 900 to 1,400 pounds. Most LTL freight carriers deliver curbside, which for a rural address means a semi at the end of a gravel driveway with a pallet on the trailer and a lift-gate as your only option — if the truck even has one. Some rural addresses are inaccessible to a 53-foot trailer at all.

Options: request a smaller truck (usually adds cost), meet the freight at a local terminal and haul it home yourself (works if you have a trailer and a forklift), or add a residential delivery service that includes better placement.
