Myth: A 10K 2 Post Car Lift Handles Any EV
The single most common assumption we correct on the phone is that a 10,000 pound capacity 2 post car lift covers every EV a restoration shop touches. It usually does, but only for the vehicle itself. The problem is that gross vehicle weight rating is not the number printed on the door jamb. A Rivian R1T tops out around 8,500 pounds curb, and once you add a battery cradle, a bed cover, and a tank of coolant, you are not far from the ceiling of what a 10K column will safely hold.
We usually push southeast Iowa EV shops toward a 12,000 pound 2 post car lift as the floor, and 15,000 pound if you are building anything on a full-frame platform. The extra column steel is not just a safety margin, it is a stability margin on wide vehicles, which we will cover next. Model Numbers Aren’t Marketing Names
SPO10, XPR-10S, CL10: the last two digits tell you capacity in thousands of pounds, and everything before it encodes column geometry, arm style, and drive-through width. A 2 post car lift labeled SPO10 SW is not the same footprint as SPO10 EH2. SW means Shockwave (fast-rise hydraulic package), EH2 means extended-height version two. When a rep quotes you a model, get the full suffix in writing before you sign anything or wire funds.
We’ve seen a body shop in central Iowa buy what they thought was a symmetric 10K unit, only to unbox a Shockwave variant that needed a 240V single-phase circuit their panel could not feed. The model number told the whole story; the sales sheet just said 10K clearfloor. Spec Sheet Fields That Actually Matter
Six fields decide whether a 2 post car lift will work in your bay: rated capacity, lifting height, overall height, drive-through clearance, arm reach at minimum, and arm reach at maximum. Lifting height and overall height are the two most misread. Overall height is column top plus overhead beam or floor plate, and that is the number that has to clear your ceiling. Lifting height is how high the pad rises from the floor, which is what determines whether a six-foot tech can stand upright underneath the vehicle.
For EV work in southeast Iowa where ceilings run anywhere from 11 feet in older shops to 16 feet in new builds, we pull the overall height off the installation manual and add three inches of slop. If the number fits, we quote the lift. If it does not, we shift to a baseplate variant that puts the crossbar low on the floor instead of overhead. That single spec has saved more retrofits than any other on the sheet, especially in older converted shops with truss chords that hang lower than the eave measurement suggests.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric for Restoration Work
Symmetric 2 post car lift columns face each other straight, and the arms come out equal length on both sides. Asymmetric columns are rotated inward about thirty degrees so the vehicle sits back on the lift, giving the driver room to open the door without banging the column. For restoration and metal work where you are in and out of the driver’s seat all day dropping in trial-fit pieces, asymmetric wins the ergonomic argument every time we run through it with a shop.
The trade-off is that asymmetric lifts have a strict front-to-back positioning window. Center-of-gravity has to sit forward of the columns or the vehicle wants to tip. On EV platforms where the battery is the heaviest single component and it lives in the middle of the wheelbase, we sometimes recommend a versymmetric, a hybrid that can be rotated to either mode. Overhead vs Baseplate on an EV Restoration Floor
Overhead 2 post car lift designs run the hydraulic and equalizer cables through a beam that crosses the top of the columns. Baseplate designs run them through a low channel that crosses the floor. Overhead is the shop-standard configuration because there is nothing on the ground to trip over, but it needs at least 11 feet of clear ceiling, and 12 feet for anything above 10K capacity in most configurations we work with.
Southeast Iowa pole barns and converted machine sheds often cannot clear that number. If your ceiling is 10 feet or you have exposed trusses, baseplate is the honest answer. Yes, you will drive over a two-inch bump every time you pull in, but you will actually be able to raise a Bronco to eye level, which overhead simply will not let you do in a low-ceiling bay. Metal Work, Welding, and the Lift Underneath
Restoration shops weld, grind, and sometimes cut sheet metal right underneath a raised vehicle. Sparks and slag fall onto whatever is below, including the hydraulic hoses, arm restraint cables, and safety cams built into every 2 post car lift. Over five years of ash and slag exposure, the outer sheathing on those cables cracks, and the internal wire strands corrode. When they finally snap, they snap without much warning to the tech standing near the column.
We stock replacement equalizer cables and arm restraint assemblies for every Rotary and Challenger lift we install, and we recommend an annual inspection for any shop doing heavy metal work. Cover your hydraulic hoses with wire-loom sleeves, keep a weld blanket on the arm-restraint housings when you are grinding, and hose the column tracks off with a shop vac every quarter. The lift will last twenty years if you treat it like a piece of shop equipment instead of a fixture bolted to the floor.

The two questions we get from every EV restoration shop in the region: can we install on the concrete you have, and how long does a 2 post car lift take to go in. The concrete answer is that four inches of 3,000 PSI is the manufacturer floor for a 10K unit, and we run a rebound hammer test before we anchor. Anything less and we quote a saw-cut-and-pour before the install. It adds a week but it is cheaper than pulling anchors after a failure ever gets close to happening.
