Configuration one: heavy-duty two-post auto lift with 15K capacity

A 15,000 lb capacity two-post auto lift is the workhorse configuration for small fleets running larger service vans, box trucks, and one-ton pickups in daily rotation. The lift picks the vehicle up by the frame, all four wheels hang free at working height, and the brake tech has full clearance to pull rotors, service calipers, and inspect wheel bearings without ever needing to add a rolling bridge jack to raise an axle. Column spread on the heavy-duty commercial units typically runs 118 to 122 inches wide, which comfortably accommodates a Sprinter or Transit van without door interference on the columns.

The two-post trade-off is spotting time on load. Every vehicle has to be positioned with the arms swung under the frame at the correct lift points before the lift comes up, which adds an extra 60 to 90 seconds per vehicle over a drive-on. For a small fleet cycling ten vehicles a day, that is fifteen minutes a day, or roughly an hour a week of extra spotting labor. Whether that matters depends on your production pressure. For daily brake service specifically, the two-post is almost always faster than the four-post on the actual work itself.

Configuration two: four-post with rolling jacks for brake service

A four-post auto lift lifts the vehicle by driving it up ramps onto flat runways, with the wheels resting on the runways when the lift is at full working height. That is not useful for brake work by itself — the wheels are still loaded on the runway surface. To pull rotors on a four-post, you add rolling bridge jacks that ride along the top of the runways and lift the vehicle up off its own wheels at whichever axle you are servicing at the moment.

The rolling-jack approach works, and it has one real advantage over a two-post: the vehicle sits on stable runways rather than on swing arms holding the frame, and a fleet operator worried about lift stability under heavy service loads may reasonably prefer that peace of mind. The disadvantage is workflow — you drive on, raise the runways, position the rolling jack, raise one axle, do the brake work, lower the jack, roll it to the other axle, raise, work, lower, repeat. That is more steps than a two-post spotting cycle. Not our first pick.

Trade-in values: what aging two-posts and four-posts fetch

Trade-in market for used commercial lifts consistently favors two-posts on a percentage basis. A serviced 15,000 lb Rotary two-post that is fifteen years old with documented ALI inspections trades in for roughly 25 to 30 percent of its original purchase price. A comparable four-post trades in for 20 to 25 percent on the same age and condition. The gap is not huge, but it exists and it reflects the fact that used two-post demand is broader in the market — more shops can put a two-post to work than a four-post plus jacks.

Rolling jacks are usually sold with the four-post and add roughly ten percent to the resale value if they are included in serviced, tested condition. Without the jacks in the package, a used four-post’s resale value drops materially because the buyer has to source them separately at real cost. If you are planning to sell your lift when you trade up to a new one, keep the jacks with the lift; they are worth more together than apart. Brand matters as much as configuration in this market — a Rotary or Challenger holds resale value; off-brand imports do not.

Resale market: who buys used commercial lifts and what they pay

The used commercial auto lift market has two main buyer types along the Iowa-Illinois corridor: private shops upgrading from a home-grade lift to a commercial unit, and other small fleets buying a second bay on the cheap without the full new-lift capital outlay. Private-shop buyers typically pay more per lift because they are stepping up in capability and are willing to invest in something that will last them a decade. Small fleets buying a second bay will squeeze the price hard because they are optimizing capex on a known-condition purchase.

For an Iowa-Illinois corridor seller, the used-lift buyer pool includes shops from Davenport all the way to Chicago and out to Des Moines and beyond. We broker used lifts across that whole region regularly and can typically move a serviced, documented, brand-name unit within thirty to sixty days of listing at fair market. Off-brand or undocumented lifts take much longer or sell for scrap. Documentation is the single biggest lever on time-to-sell in this market, along with realistic pricing tied to actual comparable sales.

Brake service workflow: which configuration wins on production

For pure daily brake service on a small fleet, we lean two-post every time. The workflow is: van rolls in, tech spots the arms under the frame at the marked lift points, lift goes up to full height, all four wheels come off in a batch, tech services all four corners while the lift stays up, wheels back on, lift comes down, van rolls out. Total cycle time on a fleet brake job with practiced techs and organized tool carts runs 30 to 40 minutes end to end without heroic effort.

The four-post plus rolling jacks workflow adds axle-lift positioning steps that cost real time on every job. On a busy fleet bay doing eight to twelve brake jobs a day, the two-post’s time savings compound into meaningful production capacity. That said, if the same bay also handles alignment, ADAS calibration, or heavy transmission work, the four-post’s stable runway makes it the more flexible general-purpose choice. This decision is really about how much of the bay’s work is dedicated brake service versus mixed general repair, and only the fleet manager knows the honest ratio.

Total cost of ownership over ten years

Ten-year TCO on a heavy-duty two-post auto lift for fleet brake service includes: purchase price, install labor, annual ALI inspection at a few hundred dollars, replacement cables typically at year six or seven (roughly $400 to $600 for parts), a hydraulic cylinder seal kit somewhere around year eight, and periodic minor repairs to arm restraints and safety pins. Total ten-year cost for a Rotary SPO18 heavy-duty two-post typically lands in the low-to-mid five figures when you sum capex and cumulative maintenance across the decade.

Ten-year TCO on a comparable four-post plus rolling jacks configuration is higher because the rolling jacks themselves are a wear-and-tear maintenance item on top of the base lift, and because the runway coating wears with heavy service traffic and needs periodic refresh. Add roughly ten to fifteen percent to the two-post’s TCO for the equivalent four-post-plus-jacks setup over the same ten years. For small fleets, the two-post’s lower TCO reinforces its edge on brake-service duty cycles. For mixed bays, flexibility can be worth the added cost.

Plan on a ten-year service life minimum with proper maintenance, and expect to recover 25 to 30 percent of the original purchase price on trade-in.
