Myth 1: All Home Lifts Have Lifting Cables That Need Yearly Replacement

The first myth is that every lift uses steel lifting cables and those cables need annual replacement. This is category confusion. Two-post lifts do not use lifting cables to raise the vehicle — they use hydraulic cylinders in each column. What two-post lifts do have is an equalization cable, a lower-stress cable that keeps the two columns in sync. That equalization cable has a very long service life and is not subject to the same wear cycle as a lifting cable.

Four-post lifts do use lifting cables — steel cables that route through pulleys inside the columns and actually raise the runways. Those cables wear, but the wear rate depends heavily on cycle count and environment. A four-post that sees 10 cycles a month in a climate-controlled home garage might go 10 years before replacement is necessary. A four-post in commercial service cycling 20 times a day is a different story entirely. Myth 2: You Cannot Inspect Cables Yourself

The second myth is that cable inspection requires a technician or specialized equipment. It does not. Cable inspection is a visual walk of each cable through its run, looking for broken strands, corrosion, kinking, and flattening. You do it with a good flashlight and a pair of clean gloves. Run your hand along each cable from top to bottom, wearing the glove — any broken strand will snag the glove and reveal itself. That is the entire technique, and it is 90 percent of what a professional inspection does.

What you do need to be careful about is not applying tension to a cable while inspecting it. That means the lift should be down, resting on its safety locks or on the runways, not held up by hydraulic pressure or cable tension. Never work around a raised, tensioned cable. Set a calendar reminder and take five minutes. That interval catches issues before they become failures.

Myth 3: Higher Cable Cost Means Better Cables

Third myth: expensive lift brands must use better cables. Not necessarily. Cable spec is driven by the load rating and the pulley geometry of the lift, not by the brand’s price tier. A properly-speced cable from any reputable lift manufacturer will meet the same ANSI/ALI safety standards and will have similar wear characteristics. What differs between brands is cable diameter (based on load rating), cable jacket material, and pulley alignment quality — the last of which is often the actual differentiator in cable life.

What you should look for in lift purchase is not “premium cable” branding but the ALI certification badge and the manufacturer’s documented cable replacement interval. Reputable manufacturers publish their expected cable service life, and that number is more reliable than any marketing claim. For auto lifts for home garage service, ALI-certified lifts from Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, or Atlas are all appropriate choices, and their cable service lives are within a narrow band of each other. Pick on other criteria — arm configuration, column height, warranty, installer network — not on cable marketing.

Myth 4: Two-Post Lifts Are Safer Than Four-Post

Fourth myth, and probably the most persistent: two-post lifts are inherently safer than four-post lifts because they do not have cables. This confuses failure modes. Two-post lifts have their own set of failure modes — arm slippage, pad crushing, hydraulic seal failure, anchor pull-out. Four-post lifts have cable failure and runway collapse. In practical safety terms, both configurations have excellent safety records when installed correctly, maintained per manufacturer recommendations, and used within their rated capacities.

The correct framing for auto lifts for home garage safety is not “which configuration is safer” but “which failure modes are you prepared to manage.” Two-post owners need to check pinch-weld adapters every use and arm restraint engagement every cycle. Four-post owners need to inspect cables quarterly and safety locks annually. Both configurations have documented safety practices, and neither is a compromise. Myth 5: Home Lifts Do Not Need ALI Certification

Fifth myth: ALI certification is a commercial-shop concern and irrelevant for home use. Wrong. ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) certification is the industry safety standard for lift design, manufacture, and testing, and it applies regardless of whether the lift ends up in a Firestone or a home garage. Insurance companies increasingly look at ALI status when evaluating home garage lifts for coverage purposes. Some jurisdictions require ALI certification for any lift installed in a residential setting. Skipping ALI certification to save on purchase price is a false economy on multiple fronts.

What CV Axle Work Actually Requires

Back to his real use case: CV axle and half-shaft replacement on European sedans and coupes. This work benefits from a two-post because the axles run from transmission to hub with the suspension in its natural drooped position — exactly what a two-post produces. On a four-post without a rolling jack, the suspension stays loaded at ride height, which makes the axle come out at a slight angle and can bind on the transmission spline during removal. Not impossible, just harder.

For his fleet of German cars, we recommended a 10,000-pound Rotary asymmetric two-post with pinch-weld adapter pads and a set of taller stacking adapters for the 964’s low ground clearance. That configuration handles CV axles on an M3 easily, on an RS4 comfortably, and on a 964 with the stacking adapters. He also picked up a rolling floor jack to support the transmission during axle removal on the harder cases. What Actually Matters When You Order a Lift

Cable myths aside, the actual variables that matter when ordering auto lifts for home garage installation are: capacity relative to your heaviest vehicle, ceiling clearance relative to your tallest lift height, arm configuration matched to your door swing needs, and concrete condition at the anchor points. Get those four right and the lift will serve you for 15 to 20 years with routine maintenance. Miss on any of the four and you will spend the next year working around a bad match.
