Auto lifts for home garage suspension and shock work come down to a single decision: two-post or four-post with a bridge jack. We had this exact conversation last spring with an independent pro shop owner on the Iowa-Missouri border who was building out a personal detached garage to keep taking customer work he could no longer fit at his main shop. He wanted to focus on suspension, shocks, and struts, which is a job that lives on the boundary between the two configurations. The choice matters because it drives everything else in the bay, including cable inspection intervals, ceiling height, and how you jack the wheels off. Configuration A: the symmetric two-post

A symmetric two-post lift picks the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and holds it in the air with all four wheels hanging free. For suspension and shock work that is nearly ideal. The wheels drop under their own weight, the springs unload, and you have full access underneath without having to unbolt or jack anything else. On a 10,000-pound symmetric two-post, you can service a typical passenger car or half-ton pickup with plenty of headroom.

The compromise on a two-post is lift-point discipline. You must position the pads on the manufacturer-specified points every single time, or you risk bending a rocker panel or, worse, dropping the vehicle. That is not a big deal for someone who works on the same cars all day, but for an independent pro shop owner touching a dozen different vehicles a week, it demands the factory lift-point chart taped to the wall. For a bay dedicated to suspension work, this configuration of auto lifts for home garage is often the fastest and cheapest starting point.

Configuration B: the four-post with rolling bridge jack

A four-post lift drives the car up the ramps and holds it by the wheels on the runways. To get the wheels off for suspension work, you drop a rolling bridge jack across the runways and lift the frame the last few inches. This is the configuration commercial alignment bays use because it holds the car predictably and lets you swap between wheels-on and wheels-off jobs in seconds.

The tradeoff is space and cost. A four-post takes more square footage than a two-post, needs slightly more ceiling height for the crossbars, and the rolling jack is a real expense on top of the base lift. But for a bay that will see a lot of ride-quality work, control-arm bushings, sway-bar links, strut replacement, the four-post is faster because you never have to worry about lift-point placement. You roll up, chock the wheels, and jack. Cable inspection: what to check on both

Both configurations use steel equalization cables inside the columns. On a two-post, the cables equalize the two carriages so they rise together. On a four-post, they synchronize the four corners of the runways. Cable failure is the single most common serious lift issue we see in the field, and it is completely preventable with monthly visual inspection and yearly hands-on inspection.

What to check on both: fraying at the pulleys, especially where the cable rides over a sheave; kinks or dogleg bends; corrosion at the swaged fittings; and slack that has developed since the last inspection. Cables should not squeak; if they do, the sheaves need grease. And on any lift older than eight or ten years, the cables themselves are approaching replacement age even if they still look fine. When to actually replace lift cables

The industry benchmark for cable replacement on a light-use home lift is roughly every ten years, or sooner if the annual inspection finds any of the issues above. Heavy commercial lifts get shorter intervals because the cables cycle more. Cable replacement is not a job we recommend homeowners do themselves; it involves careful tensioning and torque procedures that vary by manufacturer. It is also not that expensive to have done. On our two-post service visits we usually replace cables in a single afternoon for a modest labor charge plus the cable set.

The warning sign we tell every buyer to watch for is uneven rise. If one column starts rising visibly ahead of the other, or one corner of a four-post lags, the cables are stretching or slipping, and the lift needs service before the next use. Ignoring that on any of the auto lifts for home garage duty we install is the fastest path to a bent or twisted column, which is a repair we would rather not do. Suspension jobs: which config actually wins

For pure suspension and shock work, both configurations get the job done. The two-post is faster to set up and cheaper to buy. Our Iowa-Missouri border customer went back and forth for two weeks before we finally spec’d out the actual jobs he was planning to do that year: strut and shock replacement, control-arm bushings, sway-bar end links, and the occasional coilover install for a customer’s project car.

The distribution of those jobs pointed at the four-post. Most were ride-quality replacements where the car went right back on the ground for a road test, and the four-post let him do that faster. He ordered a Rotary MOH-9 four-post with a bridge jack and left the two-post option on the table for a future second bay. Iowa-Missouri border install experience

Driving down to the border from Ames is a solid morning haul, but it is well inside our normal delivery-and-install range. We staged the crate outside on the concrete apron, unpacked, and rolled the sections in one at a time. He has called us twice since for parts, once for a rolling-jack seal, once for a saddle pad, both shipped from stock. Do not overthink brand; Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Forward are all real. Do think hard about slab thickness. A five-inch slab with proper reinforcement handles either lift; a thin four-inch slab poured for a residential garage might not, and we will tell you before we ship.
