Every install starts with a site survey. We come out (or ask for photos and measurements) and check five things in a specific order: slab thickness, ceiling height, door dimensions, bay width, and electrical panel capacity. Any one of those can be a showstopper on the wrong install. For the Waukee owner, all five checked out in the first pass – five-inch slab, eleven-foot ceiling, standard residential door, twenty-foot bay, and a 100A subpanel with capacity for a 220V lift circuit.

Concrete Verification: What a Core Sample Tells Us

Everyone thinks their slab is thicker than it actually is, and everyone has heard a story about someone whose “four-inch” pour turned out to be three when it was tested. The only way to know is a core sample. We use a small-diameter core drill in an inconspicuous location and pull a plug to measure exact thickness and to visually check the concrete quality – mesh, rebar, aggregate. For the Waukee owner’s slab, we cored in the corner where the lift would eventually sit. The plug came up at five-and-a-quarter inches with fiber reinforcement and no visible cracking or delamination. That is a strong slab that will hold a 10,000-lb two-post without concern. If we had found four inches with a topping – which happens more than you would think – we would have flagged it and given him options: down-spec the lift, saw-cut and pour footings, or move to a section of the slab with better numbers. Anchor Layout and Torque Specification

Anchor layout is the second safety-critical step. Every two-post has a specific column-to-column dimension, a specific bolt pattern per column, and a specific anchor spec (usually a 3/4-inch wedge anchor at four-and-three-quarter-inch embedment for a 10K lift). We lay out both columns on the slab, verify square by measuring diagonals, and drill anchor holes to the exact depth and diameter specified in the installation manual. Then we install the anchors and torque them in the specific pattern the manufacturer requires.

Anchor torque is where amateur installs frequently fail. Overtorque and you crack the concrete around the anchor and lose holding power. Undertorque and the anchor never fully seats and shifts under load. The right torque is a specific spec, verified with a calibrated torque wrench. See our anchor torque reference for the numbers. We torque every anchor twice – once at initial set, once after the lift has been cycled a few times under load to allow for any settling. Cable Tensioning, Safety Cams, and Function Testing

Once the columns are anchored and the arms are hung, we tension the equalizer cables. A two-post has cables that run between the columns to keep the carriages in sync – one carriage cannot rise faster than the other, or the lift is out of level and the load shifts. Factory cable tension is a spec, and we set it with a tension gauge on every install. Too loose and the carriages drift; too tight and the cables wear the sheaves prematurely.

Safety cam engagement is next. We cycle the lift with no load, listen for the click at every locking position, and verify that both cams engage together – not one ahead of the other. Then we cycle under load with a spare vehicle, listen again, and hold at working height on the safeties (not the hydraulics) for a set duration. CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work – Why the Right Lift Matters Here

On a Subaru, pulling a front half-shaft requires the wheel off, the caliper off, the strut spread or ball joint separated, and the shaft popped out of the transmission. All of that is a lot easier when the vehicle is at chest height with the wheels dangling free. A two-post gets you that. A four-post with the wheels on the platform does not, unless you add rolling jacks and lift the wheels off.

He was clear about what he wanted, which made our job easy. If he had said “storage and occasional service,” we would have pushed him toward a four-post. Because he said “regular CV work on four Subarus,” we spec’d the two-post. Matching lift type to actual work is the biggest single decision, and it is where a lot of DIY buyers of auto lifts for home garage equipment go wrong. They buy for the picture on the box, not for what they will actually do with the lift on Saturday mornings.

Post-Install Safety Habits – What We Leave Behind

Every install ends with a walkthrough of daily and periodic safety habits. Daily: visually check cables for fraying, listen for clicks as the lift rises, confirm arm restraint engagement before lifting, always set the safety locks before working under a vehicle, never overload the rated capacity. Periodic: annual inspection of cables, safeties, and hydraulic seals; grease points every three months of active use; anchor torque check after the first year and every three years after.

We leave a printed checklist and the installation manual with the customer. For customers who want it, we do annual inspection service for a modest fee – we come out, inspect, adjust, and document.
