Auto storage lifts inside a restoration-focused RV and trailer service shop have a specific job — they hold a project vehicle at working height for months on end while sheet-metal work, media blasting, and frame repair happen underneath. We installed a pair of them last spring in an Urbandale shop that does exactly that kind of work, and we thought it would be useful to walk through the entire first year — slab prep, install day, first service call, and what we would change if we did it over. Month zero: the site visit and slab evaluation

The Urbandale shop called us in early spring. They had a 40×60 pole barn built out in 2019 with a nominally four-inch slab, but the owner honestly did not know the psi rating or whether there was rebar in it. We drove up on a Tuesday, brought a rotary hammer, and pulled a two-inch core sample from an out-of-the-way corner. The core showed 4.25 inches of concrete, no rebar, wire mesh only. For a pair of 12,000 lb auto storage lifts intended to hold restoration projects long-term, we recommended thickened footings at each column footprint rather than a full slab replacement.

The footing plan was simple: eight 24×24-inch cores, six inches deep, poured with high-early-strength 5,000 psi mix and 3/8-inch rebar cages. Total added cost was under $1,200 including the concrete contractor. The alternative — tearing out the 40×60 slab — would have run north of $18,000. The lesson is that a thin, unreinforced pole-barn slab does not automatically disqualify you from installing serious lifts. It just means the anchor points get engineered separately. Every restoration-shop owner we talk to underestimates how much can be salvaged from an existing slab if you evaluate honestly and pour smart footings.

Month one: electrical and infrastructure prep

Before we scheduled install day, the shop had to bring electrical to the two bays. The building had a 200-amp panel with plenty of headroom, but only one 220V circuit was landed, and it was already feeding the compressor. We asked the shop’s electrician to run two dedicated 30-amp, 220V single-phase circuits — one per lift — from the main panel to twist-lock receptacles mounted on the near column of each bay.

The electrician also ran a 110V shop-light circuit through the same trench, which we appreciated because it meant the lift install did not require pulling anything else the following week. Total electrical rough-in was about $850 for the two circuits, materials and labor combined. If you are prepping for auto storage lifts in your own shop, this is the phase where you also decide where compressed-air lines drop and where the ceiling fluorescents or LED strips will terminate — the lifts create a shadow line under the runways that a poorly placed ceiling light will make worse. Twenty minutes of forethought at the electrical stage saves a lot of aftermarket task lighting later.

Month two: install day and initial commissioning

Install day for two auto storage lifts in the Urbandale shop took our crew ten hours flat, start to finish, including anchor drilling, column setup, runway assembly, hydraulic bleed, and initial function testing. We arrived at 7 a.m. with the crated lifts on a lift-gate delivery, forklifted the pallets into the bay with the shop’s own tractor, and had both lifts operational by 5 p.m. The shop owner was on the lift running a project truck up and down within twenty minutes of the second commissioning.

The two things we always tell restoration-shop owners during install: first, the lift needs a full cycle from full-down to full-up with no vehicle on it before it sees a real load — this settles the hydraulic system, purges air from the cylinders, and lets us verify all four cables are tensioned identically. Second, the anchor bolts need to be re-torqued after seventy-two hours of concrete-anchor set. We come back on a follow-up trip for the re-torque; if a shop chooses self-install, we still email the torque spec and calendar reminder. Skipping the re-torque is the single biggest cause of first-year cable-tension complaints on new auto storage lifts, and it is entirely preventable.

Month four: the first real project loaded

The Urbandale shop loaded a 1972 Chevy K10 onto one of the lifts for a rolling-restoration project. Truck weight, all-in with frame, cab, and drivetrain, was under 5,000 lbs — well below the lift’s 12,000 lb rating. The lift held the project at seven feet of clearance for the tech to blast and prime the frame from underneath. Second lift held the customer’s Airstream project, which lived up there for the summer while sheet metal and re-skinning happened at working height.

What we noticed at the four-month check-in was purely mechanical: one of the cable tension springs had settled about a quarter-inch, which is normal after break-in and takes fifteen minutes to re-tension. The cables themselves were fine. Auto storage lifts in restoration use see a very different load profile than commercial-shop lifts — a project sits at the same height for weeks, then moves an inch, then sits again — and the equipment handles it well as long as you inspect the cables and pulleys every ninety days. We wrote a simple inspection checklist and pinned it to the shop’s toolbox. It has been followed.

Month eight: first real service call

Eight months in, one of the lifts developed a slow hydraulic seep at the primary cylinder fitting. Not a leak — a seep. A dime-sized wet spot on the concrete overnight. The shop called us on a Friday, we drove up on the following Tuesday, replaced the compression fitting and topped off the reservoir, and were back on the road inside two hours. Total service invoice was under $250 including the trip charge, and the fitting was covered under manufacturer warranty so the part itself cost nothing.

The takeaway on service is simple: real auto storage lifts almost never fail catastrophically in the first year. What they do is telegraph small issues — a seeping fitting, a settled spring, a cable that needs a quarter-turn — and the shops that respond quickly to those signals get twenty years out of the lift. The shops that ignore the seep and top off the reservoir every three months instead of calling for service are the ones we see back for a $2,000 cylinder rebuild in year five. Month twelve: annual inspection and cable check

At the twelve-month mark, we did a full annual inspection on both auto storage lifts in the Urbandale shop. That covers cable condition (visual for broken strands, wear at pulley contact points, and diameter reduction with a caliper), pulley condition (bearing spin, groove wear), hydraulic system (fluid level, cylinder rod condition, hose inspection), and anchor bolt re-torque. On a lift that has been in restoration service for a year, this inspection typically finds nothing more serious than a cable that needs a small re-tension, and that was true here.

The inspection took about ninety minutes per lift including paperwork. We left the shop with a signed inspection sheet, a photo-documented cable log, and a scheduled follow-up for the following year. This is the piece a lot of shops skip and then regret — annual inspections cost a few hundred dollars, catch failures before they happen, and preserve warranty and insurance coverage. If you are running restoration projects on lifts that never get inspected, the first indication of a cable failure is going to be a really bad day. Do not be that shop. Book the inspection at the twelve-month mark and every twelve months thereafter, and the lifts will outlast the building.

What we would change if we did it over

Two things. First, we should have specified a slightly higher-capacity lift on the Airstream bay — 14,000 lb instead of 12,000 lb. The Airstream itself is well under 12,000 lbs, but when the owner started using that lift for the K10 restoration too, we ended up with a tighter capacity margin than either of us liked. The upcharge would have been under a thousand dollars at order time, and it would have future-proofed the bay for anything up to a Class 4 truck cab-and-chassis.

Second, we would have pushed the shop harder on ceiling-mounted air-hose reels during electrical prep. As-installed, the compressor line runs along the far wall, and every restoration job involves dragging fifty feet of hose across the bay. A five-hundred-dollar reel install at month one would have paid for itself in a month of saved walking time.
