Hydraulic lift troubleshooting almost always starts with the same phone call: the lift went up fine yesterday, and today it either crawls, groans, drifts down overnight, or refuses to move at all. We take that call constantly at our shop in Ames, and after enough years of driving across Iowa with a service van full of seals, cables, and power units, we have learned that the majority of these problems trace back to five or six root causes — not the expensive ones customers fear. Before you order a new power unit or write off a cylinder, spend twenty minutes working through the same sequence our technicians use on site. It saves money, and it usually finds the real fault.

Start With Fluid Level, Not Parts
We have driven two hours to a farm shop outside Story City, opened the reservoir, and found the fluid a full quart low. That single condition explains slow rise, chattering at the top of travel, foaming, and a pump that sounds like it is grinding gravel. When the level drops below the suction tube on the up-stroke, the pump pulls air, and air compresses where oil does not. The carriage stutters, the motor whines louder than usual, and the lift may stop several inches short of full height. Check the level with the lift fully lowered, since fluid returns to the reservoir only when the cylinders are collapsed.
Use the fluid the manufacturer specifies — typically AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or ATF on some older units. Do not mix types, and do not top off with brake fluid or motor oil, which we still find in the field more often than we would like. If the reservoir was low, the oil went somewhere, so hydraulic lift troubleshooting does not end at topping off. Look at the hose fittings, the cylinder rod, and the floor under the columns. Slow Rise Versus No Rise
These two symptoms point in different directions, and separating them narrows the search fast. A lift that rises slowly under load but fine when empty is telling you the pump is producing pressure but not enough volume, or that the relief valve is bypassing early. A lift that hums and does nothing at all is usually electrical, air-locked, or has a stuck lowering valve dumping oil straight back to the tank as fast as the pump sends it out.
For slow rise, we start by timing the full cycle empty and comparing it to the spec on the data plate. A 10,000 lb two-post that should reach full height in 45 to 55 seconds and now takes 90 has a real problem. Check for a partially clogged suction screen, oil that has thinned from heat, or a motor running on low voltage because of undersized wiring or a long extension cord. Voltage drop is the single most common cause of weak performance in home garages, and no amount of parts swapping fixes it. For no-rise conditions, listen: if the motor runs but the carriage never moves, the lowering valve is likely not seating. If the motor does not run, test the contactor, the limit switch, and the up button before condemning the pump. Why a Lift Drifts Down Overnight
Settling is the complaint that worries owners most, and rightly so. A lift that lowers on its own with a vehicle on it is unsafe until you know why. The good news is that most drift is caused by a small amount of debris under the lowering valve seat rather than a failed cylinder. Grit in the oil holds the poppet open a few thousandths, and the load pushes oil back to the tank slowly and silently.
The field test is straightforward. Raise the lift a few feet, then crack the hose loose at the cylinder end — carefully, with the load supported — and watch where the oil moves. If the drift stops when the cylinder is isolated, the leak is in the valve or the hose side. If it continues, the piston seal inside the cylinder is bypassing. Rod seals leak outward and make a mess; piston seals leak internally and cause exactly this kind of quiet sag. Cycling the lift several times and flushing the system clears debris often enough that we always try it before pulling a cylinder. Either way, never leave a drifting lift in service — lower it, tag it, and set the vehicle on stands.
Hydraulic Lift Troubleshooting on Two-Post Equalization
On a two-post lift, only one column usually has a cylinder pushing directly, or both cylinders share a flow divider, and equalizing cables keep the carriages level. When one side lags behind the other, most people blame the hydraulics first. In our experience it is the cables about seventy percent of the time — stretched, out of adjustment, or fraying at a sheave. Sight down the runway with a tape measure at the same point on each carriage and you will know in thirty seconds whether the problem is mechanical or hydraulic.
If the cables are correctly tensioned and even, then look at the flow divider or the cylinder on the lagging side. Air trapped in one cylinder produces uneven, springy travel that improves after a few full cycles. Air that never bleeds out means the bleeder is plugged or the hose is routed with a high spot that traps it. Hydraulic lift troubleshooting on these units also has to include the safety locks: a lock that drags on one column can hold a carriage back and mimic a hydraulic fault entirely. Noise, Heat, and Aeration
Sound is a diagnostic tool. A healthy power unit produces a steady, even hum. A rattling, high-pitched scream usually means cavitation — the pump is starved for oil because of a low reservoir, a clogged suction filter, a collapsed suction tube, or oil too thick for the temperature. Cold Iowa mornings in an unheated garage make thick oil a genuine problem; a lift that groans at seven in the morning and behaves fine by ten is telling you the viscosity is wrong for the space.
Excess heat is the other warning sign. If the power unit is uncomfortably hot after one or two cycles, oil is circulating over the relief valve instead of doing work, or the motor is straining against low voltage. Foamy, milky oil means air or water contamination, and aerated oil destroys pumps and seals quickly. Drain it, clean the reservoir, replace the filter screen, and refill with fresh fluid. Effective hydraulic lift troubleshooting treats noise and heat as early symptoms, not nuisances — the shops that call us about a scream in January are usually the ones who avoid a power unit replacement in March. Fluid changed every two to three years on a busy commercial lift is cheap insurance against all of it.
Electrical Faults That Look Hydraulic
A surprising share of the service calls we run are not hydraulic at all. Single-phase 220V units draw hard on startup, and a marginal breaker, a corroded contactor, or a loose neutral produces symptoms that feel exactly like a weak pump: sluggish lifting, motor hum without motion, or intermittent operation that seems to depend on the weather. We carry a clamp meter for this reason and check amp draw under load before touching the hydraulics.
Test the incoming voltage at the motor terminals while the lift is running, not at rest. A reading that sags well below nameplate under load points at wiring, not oil. Check the up-button switch, the overhead limit switch on two-post units, and any interlock the manufacturer installed. Rodent damage to control wiring is a real thing in Iowa shops and farm buildings, and we have found chewed insulation more than once inside a column. Three-phase installations add rotation direction to the list: a motor wired backward will run smoothly and pump nothing, which fools people constantly. Sound hydraulic lift troubleshooting means ruling out electrical causes before you spend money on seals or a new power unit, because the parts you order will not fix a supply problem.
When to Stop and Call Us
There is a clear line between maintenance and repair work that needs a certified technician. Topping off fluid, cleaning a suction screen, adjusting equalizing cables to spec, and swapping a hose are jobs a competent shop can handle. Disassembling a cylinder under load, replacing a column, or modifying anchor points are not. If a carriage will not hold on its locks, if you find cracked welds or a loose anchor bolt, or if the lift has ever caught a vehicle unevenly, take it out of service until it is inspected.
