An autolift garage looks simple on the product page and becomes a lot more real the day a semi backs into your driveway with 1,800 pounds of steel on the tail. For a weekend hobbyist working out of a shop in northwest Iowa — the Spencer, Storm Lake, Sioux Center corner — the biggest first-time mistake we see is not the lift choice, it is the logistics. This is the pre-purchase checklist we wish every hobbyist had before they clicked add-to-cart, so the day the truck arrives feels planned, not panicked.

Step One: Measure the Building, Not the Lift

Before you compare models, measure your building. We ask every hobbyist for the four numbers that decide half the checklist: interior clear height at the truss or ceiling, interior width between walls, door opening width and height, and slab thickness. For a mid-rise or two-post autolift garage, you generally need 11 feet of clear ceiling; for a four-post with a stored car overhead you need about 12 feet plus the height of the vehicle underneath. Older Iowa pole barns sometimes run 10-foot walls, which limits your options.

Door opening matters because the crated lift is often longer than you expect. A boxed two-post column pallet is roughly 8 feet by 4 feet by 3 feet, and a four-post crossbeam crate is 10 to 12 feet long. If your overhead door is 8 feet tall and the pallet clears at 7 feet — you are fine. If your door is 6 feet 6 inches, we may need to plan a break-down of the pallet outside before it comes in. We will not send a truck to an autolift garage build without confirming those numbers first.

Step Two: Understand How Freight Actually Arrives

Most lifts ship via standard LTL freight carriers on 48 to 53 foot semis with a lift gate on the smaller loads and no lift gate on the heavier crates. A two-post shipment typically arrives on two pallets weighing 1,600 to 2,000 pounds combined. A four-post storage lift arrives on one large pallet around 1,400 pounds. Neither of these is something you can move by hand off the truck bed, which is where a lot of first-time hobbyists get stuck.

Your driveway needs to accept a full-size semi turning around, or the freight company will drop at the nearest paved road and charge a limited-access fee. Gravel driveways in rural northwest Iowa are usually fine in dry weather, but in spring thaw or after a hard rain a loaded semi can sink. We coordinate with the carrier to hit dry days when we can, and we recommend hobbyists confirm the driveway will support the truck weight before the delivery window locks in. Nothing kills an autolift garage delivery day like a semi stuck in mud fifty feet from the shop.

Step Three: Line Up a Forklift or Skid Steer

Once the pallet is on the ground, you need a way to move it inside. This is the piece hobbyists most often skip. A skid steer with forks works great for a two-post pallet. A tractor with pallet forks works for most four-post crates. A local rental yard forklift is another option, usually 200 to 300 dollars for a half day. We keep a list of rental yards in every county we ship to and will happily give you the phone number the week before delivery.

What does not work well: two guys with pry bars and a pallet jack on gravel. We have watched too many hobbyists try, and it either takes three hours and hurts somebody’s back or the pallet tips and something bends. Plan the equipment ahead. If a neighbor has a skid steer, ask a week out and pay them in beer. For a serious autolift garage build, the equipment cost is the smallest line item and easily the highest-leverage.

Step Four: Prep the Slab Before the Truck Rolls

Nobody wants to hear this, but concrete cure time is real. If you poured the slab in the last thirty days, the concrete is not at full strength for anchor bolts. We recommend at least twenty-eight days of cure before drilling for anchors on a two-post autolift garage, and forty-five days if you can wait, particularly in cold-weather pours where curing is slower. Older slabs are usually fine if they are at least four inches thick and 3,000 PSI.

Level matters too. Manufacturers give a tolerance, typically around a quarter inch across the column footprint for a two-post, and about a quarter inch across the length of a four-post. If your slab is out of level, self-leveling compound sold at any lumberyard fills a low corner cheaply. Do it a week before delivery so it has time to cure. And test slab thickness with a small drilled hole in a corner if you inherited the building — old farm shops sometimes have a two-inch topping over dirt, which will not hold anchors under load.

Step Five: Confirm the Electrical Rough-In

Even a hobbyist autolift garage needs a real electrical circuit. A dedicated 30-amp 220V single-phase circuit is the standard for four-post storage lifts, two-post lifts up to 10K, and mid-rise scissor lifts. Ten-gauge copper wire on runs up to 60 feet, eight-gauge for longer runs. Terminate at a labeled disconnect within sight of the lift. That is the whole spec for most residential builds — not complicated, but easy to forget until the installer shows up and finds an extension cord.

Add a fluorescent or LED light directly over the lift, a couple of 110V outlets in reach, and if you are working on differentials or transmissions you will want a compressed air line drop nearby. None of this is expensive, and rolling it into the initial electrical rough-in is far cheaper than adding it after the lift is installed. Your electrician will thank you if you print the lift’s install manual electrical page and hand it over on day one. We will send that PDF along the moment you place the order.

Step Six: Plan the Job That Bought the Lift

Every hobbyist we sell to has a specific job in mind that finally justified the autolift garage — a differential fluid service, a clutch swap, a rear brake job on something too heavy for jack stands. Design the layout around that job. For differential service, you need overhead clearance to swing a fluid pump line down to the case, plus a fluid catch pan that fits between the arms or under the driveline. Neither is a purchase problem, but both dictate where you locate the lift in the building.

We recommend placing the lift roughly centered along the long axis of a 30×40 building, with about three feet of clear space behind the columns for tool access and vehicle offloading. Do not put the lift up against the back wall — you will regret it the first time you need to pull a driveshaft. And leave space at the front for a rolling toolbox and an air hose reel. A little planning up front pays off every weekend for the next twenty years of ownership.

Step Seven: Know Who to Call When Something Ships Wrong

Freight damage happens. Most crates arrive fine, but occasionally a column gets scuffed, a hydraulic hose is missing from the parts box, or an arm restraint gear is dropped in shipping. The critical thing is to inspect the shipment while the driver is still standing there, note damage on the bill of lading, and take photos before signing. Signing a clean BOL for damaged freight makes a claim much harder to file later. This applies to any autolift garage shipment, from any dealer.
