Last spring we installed a car lift automotive setup for an overlanding builder who splits time between a shop in northern Missouri and a project space in southern Iowa. He owns four vehicles: a built 4Runner, a mid-2000s Tacoma, an F-350 diesel that pulls a camper trailer, and a Miata that only comes out from May to September. The problem was floor space. He needed to store two vehicles per bay and keep them accessible for maintenance between adventures. The Starting Constraint: Two Vehicles per Bay

His shop had two twenty-four-foot deep bays and eleven-foot ceilings. The 4Runner needed to store on top of the Tacoma, and the Miata needed to store on top of a fifth space that would occasionally hold the F-350’s spare bed rack when the truck was in use. A traditional 4-post storage lift like the BendPak HD-9 or Atlas Apex-9 has a nine-thousand-pound capacity and a two-hundred-twelve-inch runway, which fits a Tacoma or 4Runner comfortably and leaves clearance for a Miata on top after some careful positioning.

The car lift automotive spec came down to two questions. First, capacity. The Tacoma and 4Runner both weigh under six thousand pounds, so a nine-thousand-pound lift was plenty. Second, runway length. His Tacoma was a long-bed version, adding about a foot over standard, which meant we spec’d the extended-length version of the same lift. Small detail, big consequence. If we had shipped standard runways, the bumper would have hung over. We caught it in the spec call by asking for the exact model-year and bed configuration of the truck.

Ceiling Height Math for Two-Vehicle Storage

Eleven-foot ceilings are tight for two-vehicle storage. Here is why. The Tacoma is about seventy inches tall. Add the runway platform thickness (about seven inches for most 4-post lifts). Add clearance for the top vehicle to sit on the runway (say five inches of tire compression). Add the top vehicle’s height (Miata at forty-nine inches to the top of the roll bar). That is seven-plus-seventy-plus-five-plus-forty-nine equals 131 inches, or ten-foot-eleven. An eleven-foot ceiling gives one inch of clearance.

One inch is not enough. You need three to four inches minimum to safely raise and lower without brushing the ceiling. So we asked him to measure his ceiling to the lowest hanging obstruction, not the ridge. It turned out his lowest obstruction was a garage door track at ten-foot-eight, not eleven feet. That killed the two-vehicle storage plan for the F-350 bay. We downshifted to a single-vehicle 4-post for that bay and a two-vehicle setup for the Tacoma bay only. Getting the car lift automotive layout right meant honestly measuring what the building would actually accommodate.

The Concrete and Anchor Story

His shop was built in 2005 with a six-inch 4,000 PSI slab. Perfect for any 4-post we sell. Anchoring a 4-post is different than anchoring a 2-post because the load is distributed across four columns rather than two. Each column carries roughly one-quarter of the total load plus dynamic weight from raising and lowering. We use six five-eighths-inch wedge anchors per column, drilled to five inches of embedment, torqued to seventy-five foot-pounds, and re-torqued at the thirty-day mark.

What surprised him is the anchors are torque-critical. We showed up for the re-torque at day thirty and one of the anchors had lost about ten foot-pounds of torque because the concrete relaxed slightly under the sustained load. That is normal. What is not normal is skipping the re-torque, which some cheaper installers do. If you buy a car lift automotive setup and the installer does not schedule a re-torque visit, you are being underserved. Concrete moves. Anchors need a follow-up. Cable-driven 4-posts are especially sensitive because equal column loading depends on all four column anchors holding.

Cable Inspection Intervals from Day One

Every 4-post lift uses steel cables to equalize the four columns during lift and lower. Cable inspection is not optional. ALI recommends visual inspection at least annually for shop use, more frequently for higher-cycle installs. For a storage lift that only cycles maybe forty times a year (up in spring, down when working on a vehicle, up again for storage), annual inspection is plenty. But you inspect every time you use the lift too. You look at each cable at eye level, look for broken wires, look for kinks, look for corrosion.

The lift he bought is a Rotary-branded 4-post storage lift with double-braided quarter-inch cable rated well above the working load. Replacement interval on cables for a low-cycle storage lift is roughly every seven to ten years. For a high-cycle commercial 4-post it drops to three to five years. He is on the low-cycle end and we set a reminder in his calendar for a formal cable inspection every June, coinciding with the Miata coming out of storage. When we sell a car lift automotive product for storage use, we include the inspection schedule in writing.

What the First Season of Use Taught Him

He called me in July after his first two months of ownership. Two things had come up. First, the runway pin-lock (mechanical safety latch) was harder to release when he was under-loading the lift with just the Miata on top. That is normal; the latch pressure is proportional to load, and a light vehicle keeps the latch under-loaded. Solution: use the powered release option (a small pneumatic actuator, thirty-second install) or lift a hair higher before releasing. He picked the pneumatic release and it solved it.

Second, he wanted rolling jacks. He had spec’d the storage lift without them because he thought he would only use the lift for storage. Two months in, he wanted to do brake work on the 4Runner without dropping it off the lift entirely. Rolling jacks would let him raise the axles off the runway for wheels-free work. We shipped a pair of 6,000 lb rolling jacks a week later. His car lift automotive purchase evolved from storage-only to storage-plus-service, which is the story of about half our storage-lift customers over the first twelve months.

Seasonal Storage Realities in the Iowa-Missouri Corridor

He splits time between a shop in northern Missouri and a project space in southern Iowa. Both climates are hard on stored vehicles. Winter humidity condenses on cold metal, salt from the roads creeps up through the floors, and mice find their way into every storage garage in the corn belt. The lift itself has to survive that. Powder-coated steel is standard on any lift we sell, but salt and humidity will find any bare metal edge over five to ten years. He gets his cables and runway hardware wiped down with a light oil each fall before winter storage.

He also stores the F-350 partially raised (six inches off the ground on ramps under the tires) during the coldest months to keep the tires from developing flat spots. That is not a lift function per se, but it is part of the seasonal workflow. A well-planned car lift automotive setup accommodates the workflow around it, not just the vehicles on it. What This Case Study Teaches Other Buyers

The lesson for someone shopping a similar car lift automotive setup: measure ceiling to the lowest hanging obstruction, ask about extended-length runways for long-bed trucks, plan for the anchor re-torque, and set a cable inspection reminder before install day. These are all cheap and easy if planned; expensive if skipped. His total investment in the lift, install, freight, rolling jacks added later, and the pneumatic release upgrade was in the mid-four-figure range, and he expects the lift to outlast the vehicles on it.
