A small-fleet operator in east-central Iowa — roughly thirty vans and box trucks running route work — asked us to spec a car lift for their in-house alignment program. They were bleeding money at outside shops on quarterly alignments and wanted to bring the work in. The decision came down to two ALI Gold-certified configurations: a flush-mount scissor alignment lift versus a wide-set two-post with turnplates on a slip plate stand. Both do alignment. Why ALI Gold Matters for a Fleet Alignment Program

ALI Gold certification is more than a sticker. It’s third-party verification that the car lift meets ANSI safety and structural standards under load, that its controls behave predictably, and that its documentation is complete. For a fleet, that certification is what your workers’ comp carrier wants to see on the equipment your technicians ride under every day. Non-certified lifts can be cheaper up front and cost you the argument during a claim. On a thirty-vehicle fleet doing weekly alignment work, that’s not a corner worth cutting.

Both configurations we quoted for this east-central Iowa fleet carry ALI Gold. The scissor alignment lift is Gold-certified as an alignment platform with integrated slip plates and turnplate cutouts. The two-post is Gold-certified as a general service lift, with the turnplates and slip plates provided as certified aftermarket accessories on stands. Same safety envelope, different work-envelope. The pick between them comes down to what the fleet actually needs to do — alignment only, or alignment plus general maintenance on the same car lift.

Configuration A: Flush-Mount Scissor Alignment Lift

A flush-mount scissor alignment car lift sits in a recessed pit so its runways are level with the shop floor when it’s down. Vehicles drive on and off without ramps. Rear slip plates and front turnplates are built into the runways. It raises to a working height of about four feet, which is where alignment techs want the wheels for camera targets and wrench access. It’s a purpose-built machine and it shows: throughput on a repetitive alignment pass is faster than any two-post can match.

The trade-offs are cost and flexibility. A flush-mount install requires excavating and pouring a recess in the slab — a bigger day of concrete work than a two-post anchor set. And a scissor alignment lift is a single-purpose machine. You can rotate tires on it, you can service brakes, but you can’t easily do exhaust work or transmission drops because the arms don’t clear the way a two-post’s do. For a fleet running strictly alignment plus tire work, that’s fine. For a fleet that also wants to keep suspension and drivetrain work in-house, it’s a limit.

Configuration B: Wide Two-Post With Turnplate Stands

The alternative is a wide-set two-post car lift — usually a twelve-thousand-pound-capacity model with an extended column spacing and asymmetric arms — plus a set of front turnplates and rear slip plates on portable stands. The vehicle drives between the columns, the arms cradle the frame, and the lift raises to standard working height. Turnplates go on the ground under the front tires before the vehicle drives up. It’s the every-shop configuration and any decent tech can move fast on it.

Where a two-post loses to a dedicated scissor is speed on repetitive alignment. There’s a little more setup per vehicle — arms to position, turnplates to place, targets to level. But it wins big on flexibility. The same car lift that does an alignment at 9 AM does a brake job at 10 and a transmission-mount replacement at 11. For this east-central Iowa fleet, which needed the bay to earn its keep on non-alignment days, the wide two-post was the clear winner. Their alignment volume didn’t justify a single-purpose scissor.

Ceiling Height and Bay Constraints

The fleet’s shop had thirteen-and-a-half foot ceilings at the truss, which is workable for either configuration. A scissor alignment lift adds no vertical stack — it sinks into the floor — so ceiling is a non-issue. A two-post overhead needs about eleven-and-a-half to twelve feet of clear ceiling for the crossbar plus lifted-vehicle envelope. On a twelve-thousand-pound wide two-post, we specced a model with an eleven-foot-eight-inch overall height, which cleared their trusses with two inches to spare.

Bay width mattered more than ceiling in the end. The fleet’s alignment bay was twenty-six feet wide, which is generous. Both configurations fit with room for the alignment machine and target racks. Where it would have gotten tight is a twenty-foot bay. On a narrow bay we sometimes flip the recommendation because a scissor’s compact footprint wins where a two-post’s column swing eats space. Bay geometry decides these choices more than sales sheets do. That’s why we always want a bay drawing before quoting a fleet.

Alignment Machine Compatibility

A car lift for alignment work only earns its keep if the alignment machine sees the wheels correctly. Modern camera-based aligners — the ones with the target boards clamped to each wheel — need a clear line of sight from the tower to the targets. On a scissor alignment lift, the wheels come up to the tower’s happy-path height automatically. On a two-post, the tech raises to the same height and squares up. Not a big deal — but if your alignment machine is older or the shop uses a lift with awkward arm geometry, camera occlusion can slow the job.

We asked the fleet what alignment machine they were planning to run alongside the car lift. They already owned a mid-tier camera aligner from a previous shop location. It happened to be compatible with both configurations. We confirmed target clearance on the two-post with the arms in the alignment position and it read cleanly. If a fleet is buying the alignment machine and the lift together, we spec them as a system — matched heights, target clearances, and cable routing. Piecemeal purchases lead to surprises.

Throughput, Ergonomics, and Tech Fatigue

An alignment tech on a scissor lift stands nearly upright the whole job because the wheels are at chest height by design. On a two-post the tech usually starts standing to place the arms, lifts the vehicle to overhead, then bends back down to shim toe adjustments — a little more up-and-down. Over eight vehicles a day, the ergonomics difference is real. Fleets doing high-volume alignment lean toward scissors for that reason. Fleets doing mixed work generally decide the flexibility of a two-post outweighs the ergonomic cost.

The east-central Iowa fleet averages three alignments a day plus other work. At that volume, tech fatigue on a two-post is not the bottleneck — parts wait and route dispatch are. So the wide two-post car lift with turnplate stands penciled out as the right pick for their operation. If they scale to eight alignments a day, we’d re-open the conversation and possibly add a dedicated scissor as a second bay. That’s how fleets grow their in-house alignment capacity — start with a versatile lift, add specialty equipment as volume demands.
