An overlanding builder in Urbandale spent six weeks last winter deciding between a used and a new scissor lift for automotive restoration and metal work on his Toyota and Jeep builds, and he let us document the whole decision because it captures the right way to think through the used-market question. He was not a shop — he was a hobbyist-turned-side-business building three or four full overland rigs a year out of an insulated pole barn, and the scissor lift for automotive work he chose would sit under a project vehicle for months at a stretch during metal fabrication, welding, and bolt-on suspension installs.

The Urbandale garage and the initial ask
The Urbandale builder had a 40-by-60 insulated pole barn with a 12-foot ceiling, a 5-inch concrete slab with proper rebar, and 220 V single-phase already run for a MIG welder and an air compressor. Everything about the space was ready for a scissor lift for automotive restoration work. His initial ask was for the cheapest used scissor he could find on Marketplace or Craigslist, because he had been quoted around $8,000 for a similar-condition unit in Des Moines and was hoping to spend closer to $4,000.
The used unit he was looking at was a 12-year-old off-brand scissor from a shop closure in eastern Iowa. It had visible cylinder weep, no service records, and the model number did not show up in the ALI directory. We told him honestly that saving $4,000 on a lift that would put a $60,000 build under it for two months of metal work was not a sane risk trade. That framing shifted the conversation. The question stopped being “how do I save money” and became “what is the cheapest scissor lift for automotive work I can trust for twenty years.”
Reframing used vs new for a restoration use case
Restoration work is not brake-shop work. A brake shop cycles the lift a dozen times a shift and never leaves a vehicle on the deck overnight. A restoration builder leaves a chassis on the lift for weeks at a time while welding new sliders, boxing frame rails, or fitting long-travel suspension. That means the lock system, the cylinder seals, and the deck geometry all live under sustained load, not cyclic load. The failure modes are different. A used scissor lift for automotive restoration work has a very different risk profile than the same unit in a service bay.
Our reframe for the Urbandale builder was: the used market is fine for scissor lifts that will be lightly cycled. It is not fine for scissor lifts that will hold sustained loads for weeks. That reframe cost him more up front but reset the twenty-year math in his favor. His build cycles are worth too much money to risk on a used lift with unknown provenance.
The reconditioned middle path

Reconditioning at our Ames shop means a full teardown of the hydraulic power unit, new seals in the cylinders, new hoses, new lock solenoids if the pneumatic latch is worn, and re-labeling per ALI ALOIM. The reconditioned option is the middle path that solves the used-market temptation. The builder gets an ALI-listed brand with documented reconditioning, a limited warranty on the work we performed, and access to the same parts pipeline as a new customer. We currently rotate a small inventory of reconditioned Rotary and Challenger scissors through Ames — the availability is not always immediate, but for a restoration builder who can wait two to six weeks for the right unit, the reconditioned path is usually the winner. The Urbandale builder went new, but he considered reconditioned seriously.
The final spec and the install
He ended up spec’ing a new Rotary 12,000 lb full-rise flush-mount scissor lift for automotive work with drive-on ramp extensions, upgraded rubber pads for pinch-weld work on the older Cruisers in his build queue, and a pneumatic lock system. The flush-mount decision surprised us — most restoration builders go surface-mount because the pit cost is significant. His logic was that the metal-work bay doubled as the paint prep area during winter, and a flush deck meant he could roll the paint booth extension into the bay without ramps in the way.
Install ran a full three weeks including the pit cut, the rebar cage, the pour, the 28-day cure, and the anchor drill. That was long by scissor-install standards. The trade-off was a bay that now looks like a proper build shop when the lift is down, with no ramps and no visible hardware above the floor. He has since said it was the right call for the way he actually uses the space. That is a decision that only made sense because we had the site-survey conversation up front about how the bay would be used across all activities, not just lift use.
What the builder is doing with the lift now
Six months in, the Urbandale builder has one full Toyota Land Cruiser build up on the scissor lift for automotive restoration work at any given time, and he cycles the lift maybe two or three times a week to raise or lower the chassis while sub-assemblies get built off the truck. The rest of the time the vehicle sits at working height on locks. Welding, grinding, cutting, and fabrication all happen at chest height with the frame accessible from every side. He has also picked up two customer projects from other Iowa overlanders who saw the shop and wanted the same level of build quality. The lift shifted the shop from hobby to viable side business inside four months. That is not a scissor lift story per se — that is a workflow story. The other lesson, which came out of the six-week decision process, is that spending time on the phone with a distributor is worth doing before the purchase.
