An Iowa City small-fleet operator running eight service vans and light-duty pickups called us with a specific need — engine oil pan gasket replacement was becoming a recurring job on his older fleet vehicles, and his tech was tired of doing it on jack stands. He needed a scissor lift for automotive service that would fit his cramped two-bay shop and give him proper undercarriage access for pan-gasket work without eating his other bay. We walked him through a side-by-side comparison of two configurations he was considering, ran a site survey remotely from the photos he sent, and helped him land on the right pick. This is that comparison, written up so any small-fleet operator can run the same math on their own shop.

Small fleet challenge — one shop, one lift, many vehicles

Small fleet operators are the customers who benefit most from picking the right scissor lift for automotive service the first time. Unlike a repair shop with three bays and multiple lift types, a small fleet often has one usable bay and one shot at getting the equipment right. That single lift has to handle every fleet vehicle, every service task, and every tech who runs it. Get it wrong and you either replace the lift in two years or you live with slower service times forever.

The Iowa City operator’s fleet mix was eight vehicles: three Ford Transit vans, two Chevrolet Express vans, two half-ton pickups, and a mid-size sedan for management errands. Weights ran from 4,500 pounds for the sedan up to 8,200 pounds for a fully loaded Transit high-roof. Wheelbases ran from 105 inches on the sedan to 148 inches on the extended vans. His shop bay was 24 feet long by 16 feet wide, with a 12-foot ceiling. Any lift he bought had to fit that envelope and service that spread. We started the configuration comparison from those numbers.

Configuration one — full-rise drive-on scissor lift for automotive service

The first configuration we compared was a Rotary full-rise drive-on scissor lift, 10,000 pound capacity, with 88-inch platforms and extended-length ramps. Full rise on this model reaches 74 inches, which is chest height for a six-foot tech, plenty of clearance for engine oil pan gasket work on any of his fleet vans. The 88-inch platforms cover the wheelbase range of every vehicle on his list, with the extended Transit being the longest at 148 inches — the vehicle overhangs the platforms on both ends, which is normal and safe.

Advantages of the full-rise drive-on: fast load and unload because the tech drives up the ramps in under a minute, chest-height access for standing work, and true wheels-free service capability when paired with rolling jacks. Trade-offs: the lift down-height is about 4 inches with the ramps in place, which is a modest floor obstruction when not in use, and the platform length of 88 inches occupies most of his bay when the lift is down. In his bay, this configuration fit but did not leave much room for the tech’s mobile toolbox and creeper. We priced it out for him and moved to the second configuration.

Configuration two — mid-rise pad scissor lift for automotive service

The second configuration was a Rotary mid-rise pad scissor lift, 6,000 pound capacity, with two independent pad platforms that lift under the vehicle’s frame rails. Mid-rise reaches about 48 inches, which is enough to sit on a creeper and work under the vehicle but not enough to stand upright. The pads are compact — no full platforms — so the down-height is essentially flush with the floor and the bay is unobstructed when the lift is not in use.

Advantages of the mid-rise pad: bay stays clear when the lift is down, smaller floor footprint overall, lower purchase price. Trade-offs: the tech has to lie on a creeper for underbody work, capacity is limited to 6,000 pounds which excludes his loaded Transits, and load positioning takes longer because the tech has to drive the vehicle over the pads and align frame contacts precisely. For his fleet mix the 6,000 pound capacity was the hard blocker — he could not lift his loaded Transits on this configuration. That eliminated it from consideration for his shop, but for a lighter fleet it would have been a strong pick.

Side-by-side comparison — the specific numbers

Side by side: the full-rise drive-on at 10,000 pounds handles his entire fleet with headroom, gives standing ergonomics, and costs more up front. The mid-rise pad at 6,000 pounds fails the capacity test on his Transits, saves floor space when idle, and costs less. For his exact fleet the answer was the full-rise drive-on, but if his fleet had been all sedans and half-ton pickups the mid-rise would have been a genuinely close call. Small-fleet operators need to run this comparison for their specific fleet weights, not for a generic checklist.

We also priced a third option briefly — a two-post lift, which he had initially considered — and ruled it out because his bay ceiling at 12 feet was tight for a full-rise two-post on his tallest van. The Transit high-roof measures 108 inches tall, and adding lift height brings the top of the van within 18 inches of his ceiling. A scissor lift for automotive service does not run into that constraint because the vehicle rises with the platforms rather than being raised between fixed columns. Ceiling clearance is a real consideration in small shops and often tips the decision toward a scissor.

Installation prep and remote site survey

Because the Iowa City operator was six hours from our shop as the crow flies and we were in the middle of a busy install season, we ran his site survey remotely. He sent us photos of his bay from four angles, a measurement of ceiling height, and slab records from his landlord — five-inch reinforced slab poured in 2018. That was well within our minimums. We requested photos of his electrical panel and the target 220V circuit routing, which he sent. Everything checked out remotely.

Remote site surveys work well for small-fleet shops that are cleanly documented, but we always reserve the right to call for a physical visit if photos raise questions. In his case the photos were clear enough that we could commit to install without an on-site pre-visit. On install day our installer arrived at 8 AM, unloaded the lift, set anchors by 11, ran hydraulics and electrical through midday, and had first-cycle completed by 3 PM. No install-day surprises. That is what a well-executed pre-purchase survey delivers.

Engine oil pan gasket work — how it actually runs on the new lift

Engine oil pan gasket replacement on the Iowa City operator’s fleet vans is now a two-and-a-half-hour job instead of a four-hour job, according to his tech. Faster load-in on the scissor lift for automotive service, standing ergonomics under the oil pan instead of creeper-only, and rolling jacks for supporting the engine cradle during pan drop and reinstall. The tech told me directly that the lift changed the character of the job — from something he dreaded to something he could knock out before lunch.

The wider point for any small-fleet operator: certain recurring jobs on your fleet will drive the lift choice more than the general use case. If oil pan gaskets, valve cover gaskets, or transmission cooler lines come up repeatedly in your fleet, spec the lift for those specific jobs. General-purpose lift specs are fine for general-purpose fleets, but small fleets often have one or two recurring headache jobs that a properly specced lift can eliminate as a bottleneck. Tell us what those jobs are and we will spec accordingly. That is the whole point of the sales conversation.

What the operator would tell another small-fleet buyer

His summary at six months: run the side-by-side configuration comparison honestly, do not undersize capacity to save on price, and do a proper site survey before you sign anything. If you have a specific recurring job driving the purchase, tell your distributor about it directly so they can spec for it. The full-rise drive-on scissor was the right pick for his shop and he would make the same choice again. His only wish was that he had bought it two years earlier, before he burned technician hours on jack-stand oil pan work he now regrets.
