A Waukee weekend mechanic emailed us before Black Friday last year with a list of questions three pages long about whether a scissor lift / portable would fit his life. He worked a day job Monday through Friday, wrenched Saturday and Sunday on his own trucks and his brother-in-law’s Jeep, and had exactly one 20-by-24 attached garage bay to work with. He did not want to spend money on the wrong lift. This article is the checklist we sent him back — seven checks a hobbyist should run before ordering anything, in the order they matter, with the electrical-and-phase question being the one that surprises people most.

Check 1: measure the garage
Do this before you look at pricing. Ceiling height from slab to lowest obstruction — a joist, a garage door track, a light fixture. Note both the free ceiling height and the ceiling height when the garage door is fully open (many overheads intrude several inches into the bay when raised). Floor width and depth. Overhead door width. Distance from the door threshold to any wall obstruction. Write all six numbers on a card and keep it in your wallet.
Those numbers filter the options list. A mid-rise scissor typically raises 42 inches, so on top of a full-size pickup at 78 inches you need at least 120 inches of ceiling — ten feet — to work standing. If your garage is nine feet clear you can still lift, but you will be crouching under the vehicle at max height. For our Waukee caller with a nine-foot ceiling and a Ford Ranger (71 inches tall), 42 inches of lift left him nearly three feet of standing headroom. Comfortable. The measurement decides everything, so measure first.
Check 2: your electrical service and phase
This is the check that surprises people. Every scissor lift / portable needs power, and that power is either 110-volt single-phase (standard household outlet) or 220-volt single-phase (dryer-style outlet on its own dedicated circuit). Nothing residential is three-phase; if the marketing sheet on some lift model says “three-phase available,” that model is spec’d for commercial buildings, not your garage. Check the actual outlet you plan to use.
The 110-volt option works but is slower — rise times can be 60 to 90 seconds and startup amp draw on cold mornings can trip a shared circuit. If your garage circuit runs a compressor, freezer, or beer fridge, 110-volt will fight for capacity. The 220-volt option needs an electrician to install if you do not already have a dryer or welder outlet in the garage. Call cost for a licensed electrician to drop a 30-amp 220-volt circuit into an attached garage in the metro is meaningful but not extreme. Verify capacity and phase before you order, not after the crate lands.
Check 3: vehicle weight vs. lift capacity
Look up the curb weight of every vehicle you plan to lift. “Curb weight” is the number, not “gross vehicle weight rating” (GVWR) — GVWR is what the vehicle is licensed to carry loaded, not what it weighs empty on your driveway. A quarter-ton pickup: 5,200 to 5,800 pounds. Half-ton: 5,500 to 6,300. Three-quarter-ton diesel: 7,800 and up. Jeep Wrangler: 4,100 to 4,600. Add the heaviest tool box, camper shell, or bed liner if they live in the vehicle.
Then add 20% margin. Never load a lift to 100% of its label rating. If your heaviest vehicle is a 6,100-pound half-ton, a 6,000-pound lift is not enough — buy the 9,000-pound tier and forget it. For our Waukee caller with a 4,300-pound Ranger and his brother-in-law’s 4,100-pound Wrangler, a 6,000-pound scissor lift / portable had plenty of headroom. But when he mentioned that his cousin might sometimes bring his Silverado over, we bumped the recommendation to a 9,000-pound rig.
Check 4: floor slab condition
Slab thickness and cure quality matter. A scissor sits on four support pads whose combined footprint concentrates load on maybe six square feet of slab. Four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,500 PSI or better handles the load. Most Waukee-area subdivisions built in the last two decades poured four to six inches, so slab thickness is usually not a problem. Age helps — a fully cured 20-year-old slab is stronger than a green 90-day pour.
What matters more than thickness is slope and cracks. Check for a drainage slope that could compromise the raised deck’s level. Check for visible cracks wider than a nickel — those indicate settlement issues that could get worse under repeated load cycling. Check for spalling near the door threshold. If the slab has any of these problems, address them before installing the lift, not after. A scissor lift / portable is more forgiving of slab condition than an anchored two-post, but it is not magic — a bad slab is still a bad slab.
Check 5: warranty and long-term support
The warranty length is a proxy for build quality. Ninety days on structure means the manufacturer expects the frame to fail after ninety days, or does not have the confidence to warrant it longer. Two to three years on structure means they have tested it and stand behind it. Look at hydraulic warranty separately — cylinder and seal warranty of one year is standard on any real lift; anything shorter tells you the seals are not spec grade.
Longer term, ask where the replacement parts come from. If the answer is “the manufacturer overseas,” expect four to six week lead times when something breaks in year five. If the answer is “we stock them in Ames, Iowa,” you get them on a two-day truck. For any scissor lift / portable we sell, we carry seals, hoses, pawls, and rubber pucks on our shelf. This is what distinguishes buying from a supplier who will support you for the life of the machine from buying an anonymous crate off a marketplace listing.
Check 6: safety features on a scissor lift / portable
Verify three specific features on the datasheet before you buy. First, mechanical safety cams engaged in multiple positions throughout the travel — every two to two and a half inches, ideally, so you can set the deck at any working height and lock it. A single cam at full extension is a red flag. Second, dual-cylinder synchronization if the deck is wide; a single-cylinder single-motor design on a wide deck can go out of level under an off-center load.
Third, a mechanical lowering safety — the deck should not free-fall if the hydraulic hose fails. Look for a velocity fuse or check valve at the cylinder base that arrests uncontrolled descent. All three of these features exist on any mid-tier or premium scissor lift / portable and are optional or absent on cheap imports. Verify them by feature name in the manufacturer’s specification sheet, not just by generic marketing language. If a datasheet does not name these features, assume they are not there.
Check 7: does your actual use case fit
Last check, and often skipped. Sit down and write out the ten jobs you plan to do on this lift over the next year. Oil change, brake pads, wheel rotation, coolant flush, muffler replacement, transmission fluid change — whatever your real list is. For each, ask: does this job need full-rise (walk under, 60+ inches of clearance) or mid-rise (stand-and-work, 40 inches of clearance)? Then ask: does this job need swing arms (two-post access) or open frame (scissor deck)?
For our Waukee caller, the list was tire rotation (mid-rise, open frame — scissor wins), brake pads (mid-rise, either format works — scissor fine), oil change (mid-rise, easier under a scissor than a two-post), muffler (mid-rise, open frame — scissor perfect), and one occasional transmission service (needs a transmission jack, easier on a scissor than a two-post).
