Most reputable manufacturers structure coverage in tiers, and understanding those tiers before you sign anything saves an argument later. Structural components — columns, carriages, arms, top beam or baseplate — usually carry the longest coverage, often five years or more on commercial-grade equipment from Rotary or Challenger. Hydraulic components sit in a middle tier: cylinders, the power unit, hoses, and fittings typically get one to two years. Wear items get the shortest window or none at all. Cables, sheaves, arm restraint gears, lock dogs, rubber pads, and hydraulic fluid are considered consumables, and no manufacturer is going to replace a stretched cable at year three because you ran it hard.
The distinction that catches shops off guard is labor. A parts warranty covers the part. It does not automatically cover a technician’s drive time, the two hours on site, or the freight to get a replacement cylinder to a shop three counties out. Some manufacturers include a limited labor allowance in year one and nothing after; others never include it. The Morning Safety Walkthrough That Protects Your Claim
A denied warranty claim almost always comes down to one thing: the manufacturer decides the failure was caused by neglect rather than defect. The cheapest insurance against that is a documented daily walkthrough that takes about ninety seconds per bay. Start at the floor. Look at the anchor bolts — all of them, both columns. Any bolt that’s backed out, any concrete that’s spalling or cracking around a base plate, any visible gap between the column base and the slab, that’s a stop-work item. Then look up the column at the cables. You’re checking for broken strands, kinks, corrosion, and slack that wasn’t there yesterday.
Next, run the lift empty through a full cycle and listen. Lock dogs should click evenly on both sides. If one column is clicking a beat behind the other, your carriages are out of sync and the equalizer system needs attention before another vehicle goes up. Check that the arm restraints drop into engagement when the arms are loaded, and that the safety release works from a single point. Finally, glance at the power unit for weeping fluid and check the reservoir level. Write it down. A clipboard on the wall with a date, initials, and a checkmark is worth real money when a claim gets scrutinized. How to Open and Document a Claim Without Losing a Week
When something fails, the sequence matters. First, take the bay out of service and tag it. Second, photograph everything before you touch a wrench — the failed component, the serial plate on the column, the surrounding area, and the fluid level. Serial numbers are the single most common thing shops can’t produce, and without one, no manufacturer will open a file. Third, pull your purchase documentation and your maintenance log. Fourth, call us before you call the manufacturer.
That last step isn’t self-serving; it’s practical. Installation and Concrete: The Two Things That Void More Coverage Than Anything Else
Every manufacturer’s warranty has language about proper installation on adequate concrete, and that language is where most denials live. The typical requirement for a 10,000 lb two-post is four inches of minimum 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with adequate distance from expansion joints and slab edges. We get calls all the time from shops working with four or five inches that “may be less in spots.” That uncertainty is a problem. If a column pulls anchors and the manufacturer’s inspector cores the slab and finds three and a quarter inches of weak mix, the claim is over and the liability question gets ugly fast.
We core-test when there’s any doubt, and if the slab doesn’t make grade, the fix is usually a poured pad section rather than walking away from the project. It costs money up front and saves far more later. The second common voider is self-installation done wrong. But anchor torque specs, column plumb tolerance, and cable equalization are not places to eyeball it.
