A third-generation family garage in Council Bluffs called us last spring because the equalization cables on their 2 post car lift had started making a faint clicking sound every time the carriages passed the halfway mark. The owner’s grandfather bought the original lift in the seventies; his father replaced it in the nineties; he runs it now, mostly for oil changes and fluid service on the same customer cars his family has serviced for decades. That clicking turned out to be seven broken strands on the driver-side cable, hidden inside the column where nobody had looked in years. What the cables on a two-post actually do

People assume the cables lift the car. On most clearfloor and baseplate designs they do not. Hydraulic cylinders raise the carriages, and the cables exist to keep the two carriages level with each other. That is why the industry calls them equalization cables. They run from an anchor on one carriage, up over a sheave at the top of the column, across the overhead beam or through the baseplate channel, over the opposite sheave, and down to the other carriage. When one cylinder moves faster than the other, the cable system drags the slow side along.

That distinction matters for how you think about risk. A snapped equalization cable on a 2 post car lift usually does not drop a vehicle outright, because the cylinders still hold load and the mechanical safety latches still engage. What it does is let one side climb three, four, six inches higher than the other while a technician is underneath a car on adjustable arms. We have seen a Silverado slide off a swing arm pad that way. On some older designs, and on a handful of screw-drive and overhead-cylinder layouts, the cables carry real load and a break is far more serious. The Council Bluffs numbers: what we actually measured

On that Council Bluffs job the lift was a symmetric 10,000 lb overhead unit with 3/8 inch 6×19 galvanized aircraft cable, roughly 27 feet per side including the drops. The published discard criteria for that construction is six broken wires in one lay or three in a single strand. We counted seven in one lay on the driver side within eight inches of the lower swage fitting, which is where cables almost always fail because that is where flex and moisture collect.

We also caliper the diameter. New cable measured 0.373 inch. At the failure zone it read 0.348 inch, about a seven percent reduction, well past the five percent threshold where a cable is considered scrap regardless of visible breaks. The sheaves told the same story. Factory groove depth on those pulleys is a shade over 0.19 inch; two of the four had worn to nearly 0.26 inch with a shiny flat at the bottom, meaning the cable was riding on the base of the groove instead of being cradled by the sides. Replacing cable and reusing worn sheaves on a 2 post car lift is a waste of money, because the sheave chews the new rope in a year. We replaced all four sheaves, both bronze bushings, and both cable assemblies in a single morning and re-leveled the carriages to within an eighth of an inch.

Inspection intervals that hold up in a real shop

ANSI/ALI ALOIM asks for a daily visual check, a monthly operator inspection, and an annual inspection by a qualified inspector. In practice, nobody in a busy Iowa shop crawls into a column daily. So here is the schedule we give customers and the one we follow on our own service calls. Daily: watch the carriages as they rise and confirm they stay even, and listen. Weekly: run the equipment to full height with nothing on it, stand at each column, and look at the visible cable run with a flashlight. Monthly: pull the top covers and inspect the sheaves and the cable where it wraps them.

Annually, we pull covers on all four column ends, wipe the cable down with a rag, and run a gloved hand along the full length. A broken strand snags cloth long before your eye finds it. In a family garage doing oil changes and fluid service on maybe fifteen cars a day, expect that first serious cable service somewhere between year eight and year twelve. In a high-cycle quick-lube bay running sixty vehicles daily, we have replaced cables at year four. Cycle count matters far more than calendar age, and so does humidity. Lifts near a wash bay or an open overhead door in a Missouri River winter corrode from the inside out.

Warning signs you can catch during an oil change

The clicking sound from that Council Bluffs shop is the most common tell. A broken strand curls outward and taps the sheave flange or the column wall once per revolution. Second sign: rust dust or a fine reddish powder on the baseplate or on top of the carriage. That powder is the interior of the cable oxidizing and grinding itself apart. Third: the carriages no longer arrive at the top together, or one side hesitates and then catches up with a small jolt.

Fourth, and the one people miss, is safety latch behavior. If the latches on one column drop into a different notch than the other, the cable has stretched or the anchor nut has backed off. Do not just crank the adjuster nut and move on. Measure the cable diameter first, because a stretched cable is often a thinning cable. Fifth: any kink, flat spot, or bird cage where the strands have splayed. Those areas are permanently compromised and no amount of tension adjustment fixes them. If you see a broken wire anywhere on a 2 post car lift, the correct answer is a new cable, not a patch. We have never once regretted replacing a cable early, and we have been on the ugly side of the other decision more than once.

Replacement parts: what to order and what to check

Order cables in pairs. Even if only one side is bad, the other has the same hours on it and matching lengths keep leveling simple. When you call us, have the manufacturer, model, serial number, and capacity ready. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all changed cable routing and lengths across production runs, and a SPOA10 from one decade does not share cable with a SPOA10 from another. Our parts team looks up the serial break rather than guessing.

While the covers are off, replace the sheaves, the sheave pins, and any nylon or bronze bushings. Inspect the overhead beam channel for debris; on baseplate models, pull the floor channel cover and clean out the sand, salt, and shop sweep that accumulates. Check the safety latch cables and the release mechanism at the same time, since you are already inside the column. Then re-tension: most manufacturers want the cables snug enough that the carriages track evenly with the latches disengaged, not guitar-string tight. Overtightening a 2 post car lift cable accelerates sheave wear and can hold the latches out of engagement, which is the exact opposite of safe. Finish by cycling the equipment five times empty, re-checking latch engagement at every notch, and then testing with a loaded vehicle at low height before you trust it with a technician underneath.

Concrete, anchors, and why cable service reveals other problems

Every time we open a column for cable work we also check anchor torque, and roughly a third of the time we find a problem. Most two-post units want four to five inches of 3,000 psi concrete minimum, some heavier models want six, and we have measured plenty of Iowa shop floors that come in at three and a half. Wedge anchors in thin or cracked slab lose torque, the column rocks a fraction of a degree under load, and that rocking pulls the cable out of true in the sheave groove. Then you get uneven cable wear and you blame the cable.

So we torque every anchor to spec with a calibrated wrench, check shim stacks, and put a level on both columns front-to-back and side-to-side. If a column is out of plumb we shim and re-torque before touching the cable. If the slab is genuinely too thin, we talk about cutting and pouring a proper pad, which is a day of work and far cheaper than a collapse. One customer near Council Bluffs had a hairline crack radiating out from a rear anchor on his 2 post car lift; we cored, poured a 4-by-4 foot pad at six inches, and re-anchored. His cables have looked clean ever since, because the geometry finally stayed put. When to replace cables versus replace the lift

A cable and sheave kit plus labor lands in the low-to-mid hundreds for parts on most 10,000 lb units, with a service call on top. That is easy math against a new installed lift, which for a quality symmetric or asymmetric model runs from the mid four figures for a homeowner-grade unit through the mid five figures for a 14,000 lb commercial machine with an install. So cables alone are almost never a reason to replace equipment.

The calculus changes when cables are the third or fourth thing on the list. If the cylinders are seeping, the power unit is tired, the arm restraints no longer hold, the safety latches are worn round, and the columns show corrosion at the base, we will tell you straight that you are restoring a machine that never had modern features to begin with. That Council Bluffs family kept theirs, and it was the right call: solid columns, good slab, sound cylinders, one bad pair of cables. A different customer in the same county had a 2 post car lift from the early eighties with no arm restraints at all, and we recommended replacement instead.
