A farm shop owner northwest of Iowa City called us in February because he was tired of pulling wheel bearings on a floor jack, and he wanted a 2 post car lift in the shed where he already services three pickups, a grain cart tractor, and his wife’s crossover. His actual question was the one almost everybody asks second: symmetric or asymmetric? It sounds like a small spec. It is not. Arm geometry determines where the vehicle sits, whether your doors clear the posts, how the load splits front to rear, and how comfortable a full day of hub-and-bearing work is going to be. Here’s the pre-purchase checklist we walk through with rural Iowa customers, in the order we actually ask the questions.

Checklist item one: what is actually the heaviest thing you lift?

Start with weight, honestly. Not the vehicle you lift most often — the heaviest one you will ever put up there, plus whatever is in it. Farm shop owners around Johnson County routinely underestimate this. A three-quarter-ton crew cab with a spray-in bed liner, a headache rack, a full tank, and a toolbox is comfortably past 7,000 pounds. Add a service body and you’re knocking on the door of a 9,000 lb 2 post car lift’s rated capacity, which is not where you want to live day to day.

The practical answer for most rural Iowa shops is a 10,000 lb unit. It covers every half-ton and most three-quarter-tons with margin, it is the most common capacity in the market so parts are everywhere, and the price gap over a 9,000 lb model is small. If you regularly service one-ton duallies, flatbeds, or a Super Duty with a plow hanging off it, step up to 12,000 or 15,000 and pay attention to the arm reach and pad height range too — capacity alone does not mean the arms will reach a long wheelbase frame. One customer told us his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 pounds; when we walked through what was actually in the shed, the real number was closer to 8,500. Rate for the truck you own, not the car you drive.

Checklist item two: symmetric geometry explained

On a symmetric lift, the two columns face each other squarely and all four arms are the same length. The vehicle centers between the posts, roughly 50 percent of its weight forward of the columns and 50 percent behind. That balanced split is why symmetric designs handle long wheelbases, heavy pickups, and vehicles with unusual weight distribution so well. If your shed sees mostly trucks and farm vehicles, symmetric is a strong default.

The tradeoff is door clearance. Because the vehicle sits centered, the front doors line up close to the columns, and on a two-door with long doors you may only get a partial opening. For wheel bearing work that barely matters — you are at the hub, not the driver’s seat. But if you also do interior work, diagnostics with a scan tool, or you frequently need to start the engine while the vehicle is raised, that pinch gets old. Symmetric also loads the runway differently: because half the mass sits behind the columns, you want your pads set precisely at the manufacturer’s lift points, and you want to watch the rear on a short-nose vehicle. We spec symmetric constantly for farm shops and fleet bays around eastern Iowa, and the owners who chose it for a truck-heavy mix almost never second-guess it. Just know going in that a symmetric 2 post car lift is a truck tool first.

Checklist item three: asymmetric geometry explained

Asymmetric lifts rotate each column roughly 30 degrees toward the drive-through opening and pair short front arms with longer rear arms. The effect is that the vehicle sits farther back between the posts, with something closer to a 30/70 front-to-rear weight split. That shift moves the driver’s door behind the column, so you can open it wide and get in and out of the vehicle freely while it’s raised.

For a shop doing constant in-and-out service on cars and crossovers, that convenience is real and it adds up over a year. Where asymmetric gets less attractive is with heavy long-bed pickups and vans. Because the geometry is designed around a shorter, lighter vehicle sitting rearward, a long wheelbase truck can push the arms to the limits of their reach and put more load behind the columns than the design was optimized for. You can lift trucks on a properly rated asymmetric unit — plenty of shops do — but you must respect the manufacturer’s chart and pad placement, and the arms need to actually reach the frame points. Many manufacturers now sell versymmetric or convertible designs with expandable top beams and telescoping arms that let you set up either way, and for a mixed rural fleet that flexibility is often the smartest purchase. When someone asks us which arm style to buy for a 2 post car lift, the honest answer starts with what percentage of your work is pickups.

Checklist item four: ceiling, obstructions, and clearfloor vs baseplate

Measure your shed twice, and measure to the lowest thing hanging down. Farm buildings are full of surprises: purlins, tube heaters, hanging shop lights, garage door tracks and torsion springs, and the occasional exposed truss chord. A clearfloor two-post routes its cables and hoses through an overhead crossbeam and typically wants around 12 feet or more of clear height for a 10,000 lb unit. In exchange you get a totally unobstructed floor, which is a genuine gift when you are rolling a bearing press table or a bucket of hub grease around under a raised truck.

If your ceiling is 11 feet or you have a door opener carriage right where the beam would land, go baseplate. Baseplate models run the lines through a low crossover channel on the floor, dropping the total height requirement and letting you fit under a lower roof. The channel is a minor annoyance you stop noticing. Also check the drive-through width between columns and the space you need behind the lift — a two-post needs three to four feet of working room on each side, plus room to swing arms out. And check the overhead door height: several customers have called after installing a lift only to discover a raised vehicle wouldn’t clear the track. Sketch the bay before you buy any 2 post car lift.

Checklist item five: the concrete under it

This is where rural shops most often need to slow down. Post-frame buildings in Iowa were frequently poured as a simple slab over compacted fill, sometimes four inches, sometimes less near the edges, often without rebar. Manufacturers generally specify a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI cured concrete for a 10,000 lb two-post, and some require more depending on anchor pattern. Read your specific manual — the number is not universal.

Drill a test hole where each column will sit before you order. If the slab is thin, cracked, or sitting over a seam, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad at each column, typically a squared area a few feet across poured to the required depth and given 28 days to cure. Yes, that adds cost and time. It is still cheaper than the alternative. Anchor bolts must be driven to spec, torqued to the manual’s value, and never reused from a previous installation. Keep anchors well back from slab edges and control joints — the manual gives a minimum distance and it exists for a reason. We have been called out to farm shops where the anchors pulled a cone of concrete out of a thin slab under load. Nobody was hurt in those cases, but that is luck, not engineering. Your 2 post car lift is only as strong as what it’s bolted to.

Checklist item six: wheel bearing work and the accessories that matter

Since bearing service is the reason this shop owner called us, it’s worth talking about what makes that job good or miserable. Wheel bearings mean the wheels come off, which means you want the vehicle up at a comfortable working height with clean access to all four corners and nothing in your way. A two-post is the right tool here — better than a four-post, where the runways block hub access — and that’s exactly why so many farm shops end up with one.

The accessories that pay for themselves: a good set of stackable pad adapters so you can reach frame points on lifted trucks and still get low enough for a car, truck adapters for tall-frame vehicles, and a set of rolling jack stands or a bolt-on jacking beam if you want redundant support while a hub is out. Add a decent LED underhood or column-mount light. For hub-and-bearing jobs you’ll also want air at the bay for an impact and a press setup nearby. On maintenance: grease the column channels and slider blocks on the manual’s schedule, check equalization cable tension so the carriages stay level, keep the fluid at the right level in the power unit, and cycle the locks through their full travel every time you use it. Checklist item seven: delivery, install, and power

Last set of questions, and they trip up more rural buyers than anything on the spec sheet. First, unloading. Columns run roughly 700 to 900 pounds each and arrive on a freight truck. If you have a skid loader with forks or a tractor with a loader and pallet forks, you’re set — that is one of the advantages of buying for a farm shop. If not, we arrange liftgate or rigging, and that goes in the quote up front so nobody is standing in a gravel driveway improvising.

Second, electrical. Most 10,000 lb two-post power units want 208-230V single phase, 30 amp, and plenty of sheds only have 120V at the wall or a single welder outlet on the far side of the building. Get an electrician’s number before the lift shows up. Third, install. We do turnkey installations across eastern Iowa, including Iowa City and the surrounding counties, and we also sell plenty of lifts to people who set them up themselves. If you’re doing it yourself, you need a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, a good level, a helper, and patience with plumbing and shimming the columns. Then commission it properly: cycle it empty, verify both locks engage together at every step, set cable tension, and load-test before real work. Do that and a well-chosen 2 post car lift will still be earning its keep in twenty years.
