Start With a Decision Tree, Not a Catalog Page

We tell every restoration shop owner the same thing: don’t shop lifts by price first. Start with a decision tree. Question one is ceiling height – measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction, not just the roof deck, because HVAC ductwork, light fixtures, and header beams in older buildings near the Iowa-Nebraska border eat clearance fast. Question two is door swing and column placement relative to your bay width. A two-post configuration with a tall overhead beam needs several more feet of clearance than a low-profile or baseline-style unit, and that difference matters enormously in a shed built decades ago for hay storage, not truck restoration. Column placement relative to your bay width also determines whether you can open both doors of a full-size crew cab truck while it’s on the lift – a real consideration for restoration work where the client’s vehicle often needs interior access during service. A shop that handles both needs to think about arm reach and adjustable height range rather than assuming any configuration works universally.

Budget Tiers That Actually Make Sense

We never recommend a shop buy more capacity than its actual vehicle mix requires, but we also don’t recommend shops undersize just to save money upfront, because retrofitting a shop for a bigger lift later means new anchors, sometimes new concrete work, and lost shop days. Installation Realities in Older Iowa-Nebraska Border Buildings

This detail gets missed constantly because it has nothing to do with the lift itself and everything to do with the floor space around it.
