It covers structural design, load-holding, overload behavior, control circuits, and the quality of the instructions and safety labeling shipped with the unit. That is genuinely valuable. A manufacturer can’t self-declare it. When we spec equipment for a shop, certification is the first filter we apply, because it eliminates the gray-market imports that show up with mystery steel and welds nobody wants to inspect.
What it does not certify is your building. The label says nothing about whether your slab is thick enough, whether your anchors were torqued correctly, whether your columns are plumb, or whether the electrical feed matches what the power unit wants. Myth One: A Gold Label Means the Installation Is Covered

Myth Two: All Certified Models Are Equivalent

The things that separate them don’t show up in the certification: arm restraint design, whether the overhead shutoff bar is adjustable, cable routing and how easy it is to inspect, the quality of the hydraulic hoses and fittings, how the lock ladders sound and feel when they engage, and — critically — whether parts are still available in eight years.
That last one is where we’ve watched shops get stranded. We stock parts for every major brand precisely because we keep getting calls about orphaned equipment where the importer folded and nobody can source a carriage slide block or a matching cylinder seal kit. A certified machine with no parts pipeline is a certified paperweight. The Annual Inspection Nobody Schedules
ALI’s standard also covers periodic inspection, and this is the part shops skip. The recommendation is a documented annual inspection by a qualified inspector, plus daily operator checks. In practice, most independent shops we visit have never had a formal inspection done, and the owner is genuinely surprised when we point out a frayed equalizer cable or a lock latch that’s only catching on one side.
On the EV shop’s job, the first thing we did after commissioning was set a calendar reminder and explain what the tech should be looking at every morning: arm restraint engagement, visible hydraulic weeping at the cylinder rod, cable slack, and whether the locks click audibly at each position on the way up. It takes ninety seconds. The annual inspection is deeper — anchor torque verification, cable tension measurement, structural weld inspection, and a load test.
