A good lift inspection checklist is the cheapest insurance a shop can buy, and after years of installing and servicing vehicle lifts across Iowa we can tell you exactly why: almost every failure we get called out for was visible weeks earlier to anyone who bothered to look. This article is the checklist we hand our own techs, written plainly, with the things that actually break in real bays instead of the generic language you find in a manual’s fine print.

Why a written checklist beats a walk-around

Most shops we visit already do an informal inspection. Somebody eyeballs the columns on the way past, tugs a cable, listens for a groan. That is better than nothing, but it is not documentation, and it is not consistent. When the same person checks the same lift the same way every week, they stop seeing it. A written form forces you through items your eyes have learned to skip: the anchor bolts hiding behind the column cover, the arm restraint pins, the overhead shutoff bar nobody has touched since installation day.

The other reason is liability. If a vehicle ever comes off a lift, the first question an insurer or an OSHA inspector asks is whether the equipment was inspected and by whom. A dated, signed sheet in a binder answers that in five seconds. We have watched two central Iowa shops go through incidents within a year of each other. One had records going back three years and the conversation was short. The other had nothing written down and spent months explaining themselves. Neither shop had a worse lift than the other; one just had paper. Keep the completed forms for at least the life of the equipment, and note who performed each check. If you are building a program from scratch, start with a simple monthly lift inspection checklist and layer daily items on top of it rather than trying to do everything at once.

The daily pre-use lift inspection checklist

This part takes ninety seconds and it belongs to whoever is about to put a car in the air. Start on the floor: is the area under and around the lift clear of tools, creepers, drain pans, and air hoses? Is there fresh fluid on the concrete? A dime-sized spot under a power unit is a seal telling you something. Walk the columns and look for new dents, gouges, or paint flaking off a weld — impact damage from a bumper or a forklift is the most common structural problem we find in busy bays.

Next, the moving parts. On a two-post, check that both arm restraints engage and release cleanly, that swing arms move without excessive side play, and that lift pads and adapters are present, not cracked, and not stacked in a way they were never designed for. Cycle the lift empty to full height and listen. You want both carriages arriving together, locks clicking in sequence, and no metallic squeal from the sheaves. Lower it and confirm it seats fully. On a four-post, add a look at the runway crossmembers and the slack-cable safety flags. Anything abnormal, the lift gets tagged out of service that minute — a red tag on the controls costs you one bay for a day, and skipping it can cost far more. This portion of the lift inspection checklist is non-negotiable because it catches the fast-moving failures.

Cables, chains, and what wear really looks like

Equalizer cables and lifting chains are the single most common parts we ship out of our store, and they almost always fail in the same predictable ways. Run a shop rag along the full length of each cable with the lift at working height. If it snags, you have a broken wire, and broken wires never come alone. Look specifically at the last few inches before each swaged end and where the cable rides the sheave — that is where fatigue concentrates. Any bird-caging, kinking, corrosion, or flattening is a replacement, not an adjustment.

On chain-driven two-post lifts, check for stretch and for stiff links that will not articulate. Uneven carriage height is the tell: if one side arrives at the top an inch behind the other, your cables or chains have stretched unevenly and the load is no longer sharing the way the engineer intended. Replace them as a set, never one side, and reset the equalizer per the manufacturer’s spec. We also want you looking at sheave bearings while the covers are off, because a seized sheave chews a brand-new cable in a month. Cables are wear items with no published lifespan — a lift cycling forty times a day in a tire shop and a home lift cycling forty times a year are on completely different clocks, and only inspection tells you which one you have.

Locks, safeties, and the overhead shutoff

Safety locks are the reason a lift is a lift and not a jack, so this section of any lift inspection checklist deserves real attention. Raise the unit through its travel and count audible lock engagements on each column. They should be even in number and close in timing. Then set the lift on the locks with a vehicle on it and confirm the carriages actually rest on steel, not on hydraulic pressure. If the lift settles noticeably after the pump shuts off, you have either a lock that is not seating or a cylinder or valve bleeding down.

Check the lock release mechanism — air cylinders, cables, or linkage depending on the brand. Sticky releases usually mean a dry pivot or a leaking air line, both cheap fixes that get expensive when someone forces the issue. On overhead two-post lifts, verify the shutoff bar stops the lift before a roof contacts the crossbar; test it with a broom handle rather than a customer’s truck. On four-post and inground lifts, confirm the slack-cable safeties drop when tension is released. Also confirm the lift lowers only under deliberate control and that the lowering valve is not weeping. Rotary and Challenger lock hardware is widely stocked, so there is rarely a reason to run a lift with a questionable lock — a full lift safety inspection checklist treats any lock fault as immediate downtime.

Anchors, concrete, and column plumb

This is the item shops skip most and the one that scares us most. Every two-post lift on earth transfers its overturning moment into a handful of anchor bolts in a concrete slab. Torque each anchor to the manufacturer’s spec with an actual torque wrench during your annual pass, and visually check for spinning bolts, crushed shims, rust weep, or a raised cone of cracked concrete around any anchor. Radiating cracks from a base plate mean the slab is losing the fight, and no amount of retorquing fixes that.

Put a level on both columns front-to-back and side-to-side. Manufacturers allow only a small amount of lean, and a column that has drifted out of plumb is usually telling you the slab has settled or the anchors have pulled. We see this constantly in older Iowa buildings where a lift was installed on a four-inch slab poured in the sixties over uncompacted fill, or right at a control joint where it never should have gone. The fix is a proper cut-out and repour — thickness and PSI both matter, and so does keeping anchors well away from joints and slab edges. Hydraulics, power unit, and electrical

Pull the fill plug and check fluid level with the lift fully lowered — that is the only position where the reading means anything. Fluid should be clean and clear; milky fluid means water intrusion, and dark or gritty fluid means something upstream is wearing. Use the fluid the manufacturer calls for, and remember that a lift that suddenly needs topping off every few months is not consuming fluid, it is losing it somewhere. Trace the lines and fittings, check the cylinder rod for scoring or a wet collar, and look at the hose routing for chafe points against sharp steel.

On the electrical side, confirm the power unit is on a dedicated circuit of the correct voltage and that the disconnect is accessible and labeled. Look at the cord and conduit for cracked insulation, missing strain reliefs, or a junction box someone opened and never closed. Motors that hesitate on startup, hum, or trip a breaker under load are usually fighting a voltage problem or a failing capacitor rather than a bad motor. Listen to the pump under full load with a vehicle up: a healthy unit sounds steady, while cavitation whine points to low fluid, a clogged filter, or air in the system. Record cycle-to-full-height time on your lift inspection checklist — when that number creeps up, something in the hydraulics is telling you so early.
