Why Restoration and Metal Work Raise the Safety Stakes
General service work puts a vehicle in the air for twenty minutes. Restoration and metal work put it up there for days, sometimes weeks, while somebody cuts, grinds, welds, and pulls on it. That changes the risk profile entirely. Every hour under load is an hour the cables, latches, and cylinder are holding, and every pull on a rusted crossmember is a lateral force the designer did not necessarily plan for. Heat from welding near a hydraulic line is a hazard nobody thinks about until a hose lets go.
For fleet shops doing bed replacements, frame patching, and hoist rebuilds, we push hard toward four-post runway designs with mechanical safety latches at every position and a set of rolling jack bridges for wheels-free work. A four-post carries the load on the tires through the frame, which is far more forgiving when a tech is prying on a body mount than a two-post holding a truck by four contact points. We also insist on jack stands under the runways for any extended job. Redundancy is not paranoia — it is the standard practice in every well-run municipal shop we work in. Capacity Rating Versus What Your Fleet Actually Weighs
Fleet managers get burned here more than anyone. A one-ton dump with a plow, a spreader, and a full tank of fuel is not the same vehicle as the one on the registration. We have weighed municipal units that came in 40 percent above what the shop assumed. When you size an auto lift for a fleet, you size for the heaviest configuration of the heaviest unit, fully loaded, plus a real margin — not the average of the fleet.
Then look at weight distribution, which is the part that gets missed. A rated capacity of 18,000 lb usually assumes a roughly balanced load. Put a dump body with a rear-mounted spreader on a runway lift and the rear axle may be carrying far more than half the total. Every reputable manufacturer publishes per-axle limits, and those are the numbers your techs need posted on the wall next to the controls, not just the big total on the nameplate. We also look at wheelbase and overall length, because a long utility body on a short runway means overhang the design never intended. For most municipal shops on the Iowa-Missouri border we end up recommending either a 14,000 to 18,000 lb four-post for medium-duty trucks, or a set of mobile column units when the fleet includes anything articulated, extra-long, or too heavy for a fixed runway.
The Pre-Purchase Site Survey We Insist On
Before we quote, somebody looks at the building. Slab thickness and strength come first — most surface-mounted equipment wants a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI or better, and older municipal garages are a coin flip. We have cored floors that turned out to be a thin topping over gravel, and we have found rebar exactly where the anchors needed to go. Better to know in the survey than on install day with a crew standing around.
Then clear height, door height, and drive-in path. A common miss in older shops: the ceiling is tall enough, but the overhead door opening is not, so a raised truck cannot be moved and the tallest vehicles cannot even enter the bay in the first place. We also check power. Most commercial-duty units want 208-240V single or three phase, and the answer to “do I need 220V” is almost always yes for anything above home-garage capacity. Add an electrician’s estimate to your project budget from day one. Finally we look at drainage, floor slope, and where the compressed air line runs, since many four-post latch releases are air-actuated. A one-hour survey routinely prevents a three-week delay.
Financing Terms and Payment Schedules, Explained Plainly
Municipal purchasing does not work like a retail sale, and we have learned to work with it rather than fight it. The three structures we see most often are straight capital purchase against a fiscal-year budget line, a municipal lease-purchase agreement that spreads the cost over three to five years with a nominal buyout, and an operating lease where the shop simply pays for use. Lease-purchase is the most common for fleet shops because it fits annual appropriation cycles and often avoids the council approval threshold that a lump-sum capital request triggers.
On payment schedules, expect something like a deposit at order to lock pricing and start the manufacturing queue, a progress or balance payment at shipment, and final payment after install and acceptance sign-off. We are flexible on how that gets sequenced when a purchase order or a net-30 government term is involved — we deal with city and county paperwork regularly and we do not need you to prepay a whole project out of pocket. What we will not do is quote you a fake number to win the job and then add freight, install, and electrical as change orders later. Ask any supplier for a written all-in figure covering equipment, freight, liftgate or forklift unloading, install labor, anchors, and startup. If a quote does not itemize those, it is not a real quote.
Training, Signage, and the Daily Habits That Prevent Injuries
The equipment is the easy part. Most incidents we investigate trace back to procedure, not hardware. Every operator needs documented training on that specific model — where the lift points are, how to verify the latches have engaged, what the audible click sounds like, how to lower in an emergency, and what to do when the two sides do not travel evenly. In a municipal shop with rotating seasonal staff and plow-season temps, that training has to be repeatable and written down, not passed along verbally.
Post the load capacity and the manufacturer’s lift-point guidance at the controls. Keep the operator manual in the bay, not in a filing cabinet in the front office. Establish a daily walk-around: look at the cables, check for hydraulic weeping under the columns or the power unit, confirm the arm restraints engage, and make sure nothing is stacked in the runway path. Establish a rule that nobody works under a raised load until the latches are set and secondary stands are placed. And schedule the annual ANSI-standard inspection by a qualified inspector — for a municipal shop that documentation is also your liability record. Parts, Downtime, and Keeping the Auto Lift Running
A fleet shop cannot afford a lift that is down for six weeks waiting on a sheave. The failure items on a runway unit are predictable: equalization or lifting cables, latch springs and cables, sheaves and bearings, cylinder seals, air release cylinders, and the rubber on the rolling jacks. We stock those for the major brands and can generally get common parts on their way the same day. If your unit is twenty years old and the original manufacturer has moved on, tell us the nameplate and serial and we will usually find a fit or a workable equivalent through our parts lookup.
The other half of uptime is preventive maintenance. Grease the sheaves and slide points on the schedule in the manual, check hydraulic fluid level and condition seasonally, and keep cable tension adjusted so both sides travel together. In a salt-heavy climate — and everything from Des Moines south catches plenty of it off the trucks themselves — rinse and inspect floor-level components, because corroded cable is the single most common reason we pull equipment out of service. Budget a modest annual line item for parts and inspection and you will get twenty-plus years out of a good auto lift. Skip it and you will be replacing a unit in eight.
