A heavy-duty truck shop owner about ninety minutes south of the Iowa line in northern Missouri called us last spring wanting to know one thing: what would it actually cost, all in, to put a lift in his shop so his guys could stop crawling under trucks on ramps to do oil changes and fluid service. He had a number in his head from a website and it was less than half of what the finished job runs. That is not because anybody is hiding costs. It is because an autolift garage project has four or five separate budget lines and the equipment price is only one of them. This article walks the whole thing, from site survey through the first oil change, with real numbers in ranges.

Step One: The Site Survey Nobody Wants to Pay For
Before we quote anything, we want eyes on the building. Sometimes that is a physical visit and sometimes it is a phone call with a tape measure and a camera on the other end. Either way, we are collecting the same six things: slab thickness and age, clear ceiling height under the lowest obstruction, available electrical service and phase, bay width and depth, floor drain and trench locations, and door opening height. Miss any one of those and something goes wrong on install day.
On the northern Missouri job, the slab turned out to be the problem. The shop was in a converted implement dealer building poured sometime in the 1970s with no documentation. We cored two test holes and found four and a half inches in one spot and just under four in another, over questionable base. For light passenger work that is borderline acceptable. For a shop putting medium-duty trucks in the air, it was not. That single hour of coring changed the entire project plan and saved him from anchoring a heavy-duty lift into concrete that would have cracked out within a year. A site survey on an autolift garage project is not an upsell. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole job.
Fixing the Slab: Cut-Out Pads Versus Full Repour
When the concrete does not meet spec, there are two honest paths. You saw-cut and remove a section under each post, dig down, compact fresh base, and pour new reinforced pads to manufacturer spec. Or you repour the entire bay. Pads are far cheaper and they work well for two-post installations where the load concentrates at four anchor locations. A full repour makes sense when the existing floor is broadly failing, when you are doing multiple bays at once, or when you want a flush-mount or drive-through layout.
For the truck shop we went with cut-out pads, roughly five by five feet at each post, twelve inches deep, 4,000 PSI with rebar mats tied top and bottom and doweled into the existing slab. Concrete work like that is a local trade and pricing varies, but budget it as a meaningful line item, not a rounding error. Then wait the full 28 days. He wanted to install at 12 days because the trucks were backing up in the yard. We said no. We have seen anchors pull out of green concrete and the resulting damage costs more than a two-week delay ever will. Anyone rushing you into anchoring an autolift garage lift into fresh concrete is protecting their schedule, not your building.
Picking the Right Lift for Oil Changes and Fluid Service
Fluid service is a specific use case and it changes the equipment answer. You need full access to drain plugs, filter housings, and fill points, and you need the tech to be able to stand upright with a drain barrel underneath. For a shop working mostly medium-duty trucks and heavy pickups, a set of four mobile column lifts is often the smartest buy. They handle a range of wheelbases, they move between bays, they do not require slab anchoring at all, and they work outdoors on the apron in good weather. For a shop with slab problems, the no-anchor argument is compelling.
The alternative for this northern Missouri operation was a heavy-capacity two-post in the 18,000 to 30,000 pound range, which is faster for single-vehicle work and cheaper than a full column set. We laid both out for him. Two-post wins on speed and cost per lift; mobile columns win on flexibility, capacity ceiling, and independence from the slab. He went with a four-column set because half his volume was straight trucks his two-post could not have reached anyway. Whichever direction an autolift garage goes, the equipment should be chosen against the actual vehicle mix rolling through the door, not against the cheapest unit that technically hits the weight rating.
Electrical: The Line Item That Surprises People
Every lift needs power and almost nobody budgets for the electrician. A single two-post lift typically wants a dedicated 208 to 230 volt single-phase circuit with a fused disconnect within sight of the power unit. A mobile column set wants a receptacle configuration matched to the columns, and heavier commercial equipment often runs three phase. If your building has three-phase service, great. If it does not and the lift you want needs it, you are either paying the utility for a service upgrade or specifying single-phase motors up front.
The truck shop had three-phase already because of an old air compressor, which was lucky, but the panel was full and the runs were long. His electrician added a subpanel and pulled new conduit about ninety feet across the shop. That was a real four-figure line item that had not appeared in anyone’s original math. We always tell customers to get an electrician to walk the space during the site survey, at the same time we are there if possible, so the number is known before the lift is ordered. On an autolift garage build, electrical routinely lands somewhere between five and fifteen percent of the total project depending on how far the power has to travel and whether a service upgrade is involved.
Freight, Delivery, and Rigging Into the Building
Lifts ship on freight trucks and they are heavy and awkward. A two-post arrives as two columns, an overhead or floor plate assembly, arms, and a hardware crate, and it typically comes on a flatbed or a van with a liftgate depending on weight. Mobile columns ship on pallets and a set of four is a serious amount of freight. Somebody has to get that off the truck, and if your shop does not have a forklift with the reach and capacity, you are paying for a liftgate delivery or a rigger.
Access into the building is the other half. We have had jobs where the lift columns would not fit through the man door and the overhead door was blocked by a parts rack that had not moved in a decade. Measure your door opening. Clear a path. Have the bay empty on install day, not half empty. On the northern Missouri job the shop owner had a telehandler on site from a construction project and unloading took twenty minutes, which is the best case. Budget freight as its own line and ask us up front whether your site needs liftgate service. It is a small number compared to the equipment but it is not zero, and it is the kind of surprise that sours an otherwise smooth autolift garage project.
Installation Day: What Our Crew Does and How Long It Takes
A standard two-post install on good concrete with clear access is a one-day job for our crew. We set and plumb the columns, drill and set anchors to torque spec, hang the overhead or route the floor plate, install arms and restraints, connect hydraulics and electrical, fill and bleed the system, set the equalization cables or chains, and cycle the lift through every lock position empty and then loaded. We do not leave until it has lifted an actual vehicle and the shop crew has watched the daily inspection walkthrough.
A four-column mobile set is different work. There is less anchoring and more commissioning, syncing the columns, verifying the control system talks to every unit, and training the crew on the sequence for picking up a straight truck safely. The Full Cost Picture and What We Would Tell You to Do First
Here is how the budget stacked up on that job, in tiers. The equipment was the largest single line and for heavy-duty capacity it lands in the upper-mid five figures for a four-column set, or a fraction of that for a heavy two-post. Concrete cut-out pads ran a solid four-figure number. Electrical subpanel and conduit ran another four-figure number. Freight and liftgate service was a modest add. Installation labor and commissioning was a defined line we quoted up front. Add it together and the finished project was roughly one and a half to one and three quarters times the sticker price of the equipment alone.
That ratio is fairly typical for a retrofit into an older building. A new build with a properly spec’d slab and power already run to the bay comes in much closer to equipment cost plus install.
