When a tire and alignment shop owner in Waukee called us last spring, the question wasn’t really about price. He wanted to know whether the autolift garage setup he’d inherited when he bought the building was safe to keep running alignment work on, or whether he was one bad afternoon away from a serious problem. That’s the right question to ask, and it’s one we get more often than you’d think. We’re based in Ames, Iowa, and between installs we spend a lot of our week crawling under other people’s equipment with a flashlight and a torque wrench. This article is the walkthrough we gave him — the safety inspection order we follow, the brand history that explains why some old lifts are worth saving, and how the parts pipeline actually works when something needs replacing.

Why We Start Every Inspection at the Serial Tag

Before we look at a single cable or anchor bolt, we find the data plate. On a two-post it’s usually on the inside of the powered column near the top, sometimes hidden behind decades of grease and shop dust. That tag tells us the manufacturer, the model, the capacity, and the serial number — and from there we can pull the original installation manual, the anchor spec, and the parts breakdown. Without it we’re guessing, and guessing is how people end up with the wrong length cable or an arm pin that’s a sixteenth undersized.

The Waukee shop’s lift turned out to be a mid-1990s Rotary two-post, 10,000 lb capacity, and it had been sitting in that bay for close to thirty years. That’s not a problem by itself. Rotary has been building lifts in the United States since the 1920s, and the frames from that era were built heavy — thick steel columns, generous safety margins, straightforward mechanical locks. What fails on those machines is the wear items: cables, sheave bearings, lock dogs, hydraulic seals, and the anchors that hold the whole thing to the slab. All of those are replaceable. The column isn’t the part that gives up first, which is why we tell owners not to write off an older lift until someone qualified has actually looked at it.

Brand History Matters More Than You’d Guess

People assume a lift is a lift. In practice, the manufacturer behind your equipment determines whether you can get parts in three days or three months. Rotary and Challenger both have long, continuous production histories and real North American parts support, which means a lift from either brand — even a thirty-year-old one — usually has an available cable set, lock assembly, and cylinder rebuild kit. That’s not marketing talk. It’s the difference between a bay back in service Thursday and a bay full of a boat anchor.

On the home and light-commercial side, BendPak and Atlas have both built out deep catalogs and consistent part numbering, so a homeowner with a 9,000 lb two-post from either brand is generally in good shape. The trouble comes with the no-name imports that showed up under a dozen different labels over the years, got sold through a catalog, and then vanished. We’ve measured and cross-referenced cables for those lifts plenty of times and we can usually make something work, but it takes longer and there’s no factory drawing to fall back on. If you’re buying used for your autolift garage, brand history is a legitimate line item in your decision — not brand snobbery, just parts availability math you’ll live with for the next twenty years.

The Concrete Under an Autolift Garage Is Half the Safety Story

Anchors get all the attention, but anchors are only as good as what they’re anchored into. Most two-post lifts in the 10,000 lb class want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of manufacturers specify more than that. Older Iowa shop floors are a mixed bag. We’ve cored slabs that measured a beautiful six inches and we’ve cored slabs that were three and a half inches of tired concrete over gravel, poured in an era when nobody imagined a lift going in that corner.

At the Waukee shop we drilled a small test hole near the driver-side column and found just over five inches — plenty. But we also found that two of the eight original anchors had been spinning in their holes, probably for years, and the concrete around them had crumbled into powder. That’s the failure mode nobody watches for. The lift looks fine, it raises and lowers, and meanwhile the base plate is walking a few thousandths every cycle. We cut new holes on fresh spec, epoxied in larger-diameter anchors, and torqued everything to the manual number. If you own an autolift garage lift, put a torque wrench on your anchors annually. It takes fifteen minutes and it’s the cheapest safety work you’ll ever do.

Cables, Lock Dogs, and What Actually Fails First

On a two-post, the equalization cables are the component we replace most often. They don’t hold the vehicle up — the hydraulic cylinder does that — but they keep the carriages level and, on most designs, they hold the mechanical safety locks open. When a cable stretches, frays, or snaps, the locks drop and the carriage stops. That’s the system working as designed, and it’s also your signal that maintenance is overdue.

What we look for: broken strands anywhere along the run, especially where the cable rides a sheave; corrosion at the swaged fittings; a sheave that doesn’t spin freely by hand; and locks that don’t click crisply into every position as the carriage rises. On the alignment side, there’s a second thing to check — carriage level. An alignment rack or a two-post used for alignment work needs both sides sitting within spec of each other, and a stretched cable throws that off before it throws off anything you’d notice by eye. The Waukee lift was three-quarters of an inch out side to side. New cable set, adjusted per the manual, and the locks engaged simultaneously again. We also greased the column slide blocks, which nobody had touched in a decade, and the noise the lift had been making for years simply stopped.

ALI Certification and Annual Inspection, Explained Plainly

The Automotive Lift Institute certifies lift models to ANSI standards and also credentials the inspectors who evaluate them in the field. For a commercial shop, an annual ALI-style inspection is the documented record that you checked your equipment — which matters for your insurance carrier, and matters more if something ever goes wrong and somebody asks what you knew and when.

Here’s the honest version: certification isn’t magic. An ALI gold-label lift installed on bad concrete with loose anchors is dangerous, and an uncertified older lift that’s been maintained religiously can be perfectly safe. What certification buys you is a known engineering baseline and a factory that stood behind a real test. What inspection buys you is knowledge of your specific machine’s condition right now. You want both. We walk shops through the checklist so they can do quarterly self-checks between formal inspections — cable condition, lock function, anchor torque, hydraulic leaks, arm restraint engagement, overhead shutoff bar operation, and the condition of the swing arm pins and pads. Write the dates in a notebook and keep it in a drawer in the office. A shop that can produce a maintenance log for its autolift garage equipment is in a fundamentally different position than one that can’t.

The Parts Pipeline: How a Cable Set Actually Gets to Waukee

Shop owners often assume parts come from a mysterious warehouse somewhere and arrive whenever they arrive. It’s more concrete than that. What We’d Change If We Were Setting Up That Bay Today

The lift stayed. That was the right call — good frame, good concrete, and the wear items were cheap relative to a new install. But if we’d been laying out that bay from scratch for alignment work, a few things would be different. First, we’d have set the columns wider on the drive-through dimension. Alignment techs spend their day walking around the vehicle with a head in one hand, and an extra eight inches of clearance per side pays for itself in shin bruises alone.

Second, we’d have run air and power drops from overhead instead of along the floor. Hoses on the ground next to an alignment lift are a trip hazard and they get run over. Third, we’d have specified taller adapters from day one. Trucks and crossovers keep getting taller, and a set of stackable adapters and truck adapters kept in a rack near the columns beats improvising with blocks. Fourth, lighting — LED strips on the column faces cost very little and change the whole experience of working under a car. None of that is exotic. It’s the kind of thing you only think about after you’ve stood in a couple hundred bays.
