Their techs were crawling under Class C motorhomes and dual-axle trailers with a droplight in one hand, and the shop owner had finally done the math on how much time that cost him per job. We spent a morning walking his bays with a tape measure and a concrete probe, and twelve months later we went back to service the same unit. This is what that first year actually looked like — the install, the first surprises, the first annual inspection, and what the equipment was worth by the end of it.

Why an RV and Trailer Shop Chose Two-Post Over Four-Post

The instinct with big vehicles is to reach for a four-post runway lift, and for storage or alignment that instinct is right. But this shop’s bread and butter was exhaust systems, driveshafts, U-joints, carrier bearings, and fuel tank drops. Every one of those jobs happens in the middle of the vehicle, directly under the frame rails — exactly where a four-post’s runways sit. Their techs would have been fighting the runways on every single job, and rolling jacks only solve part of that problem.

Automotive two post lifts put the vehicle in the air with nothing underneath it but arms at the pickup points. For driveline work, that’s the difference between a forty-minute job and a ninety-minute job. The owner had also run into the reach problem: motorhome and truck chassis have wide-set frame rails and long wheelbases, so we spec’d an asymmetric-capable unit with three-stage front arms and telescoping rears rather than a short-arm passenger-car model. He kept the ramps for the occasional lowered dually and sold the jack stands to a neighbor. The other factor was floor space. A two-post footprint is two columns and a baseplate or overhead beam; the rest of the bay stays open for a parts cart, a transmission jack, and a welder. In a shop where trailers get wheeled in sideways, that mattered more than he expected.

The Site Survey: Concrete, Ceiling, and the Overhead Question

Before we quote anything we want three numbers: slab thickness, slab strength, and clear ceiling height. This building had a nominal six-inch pour, and when we cored it we found closer to five and a half in one spot near an old drain trench. That’s workable for a 12,000 lb unit, but it changed where the columns went — we shifted the whole installation eighteen inches toward the center of the bay to stay on undisturbed concrete with clean anchor embedment.

Ceiling was the bigger conversation. He had a 14-foot clear height under the trusses, which sounds generous until you remember that a Class C with a roof AC shroud can hit eleven feet before you lift it an inch. An overhead-beam two-post would have made the tallest units unliftable. We went baseplate. The tradeoff is a floor plate that hoses and creepers have to cross, and every tech in the building complained about it for the first two weeks and then never mentioned it again. We tucked the plate cover tight and ran a bead of sealant so it wouldn’t trap grit. Power was straightforward: existing 208V three-phase panel with room for a 30-amp breaker, so no service upgrade.

Install Week and the First Ten Lifts

Installation on a clean slab with power already in place is a one-day job for our crew, two if we’re chasing an electrician or the concrete needs remediation. We laid out the columns, drilled and set anchors to torque spec, plumbed the hydraulic lines, bled the cylinder, and ran the unit through a full cycle with no load before anything touched it. Then we cycled it loaded, checked lock engagement at every position, and set the overhead or floor-plate cutoff.

The first ten lifts are where new owners learn the equipment. This shop’s techs figured out within a day that the arm restraints on automotive two post lifts are not optional and not a suggestion — one guy skipped seating a restraint on a short-wheelbase trailer tug and got a very educational bump when the arm shifted a quarter inch under load. Nobody got hurt, and the lesson stuck. They also learned to slow down on pickup point selection. Motorhome chassis often have factory jack pads that are not the same as the lift points, and a frame-rail pinch on a thin-wall channel will dimple it. We left them a laminated card with adapter combinations for the chassis families they see most, and the owner had a tech tape it to the column. Small thing, but it cut their setup time noticeably by week three.

Exhaust and Driveline Work: What Actually Changed

The productivity story here isn’t abstract. Before the install, a full cat-back exhaust replacement on a motorhome chassis was a two-tech job with one man on his back on a creeper. After, it was one tech standing upright with a plasma cutter and a MIG at chest height. The owner told us they went from three exhaust jobs a week to booking six or seven, and the driveline work — which they’d previously farmed out because it was miserable — came back in-house.

Automotive two post lifts also changed how they diagnosed. Being able to put a unit at eye level and grab a driveshaft to check U-joint play, or spin a wheel to listen for a carrier bearing, is diagnosis you simply cannot do on ramps. They started catching worn center support bearings before they failed, which turned into upsell revenue rather than tow-in emergencies. The other quiet win was rust inspection. Northwest Iowa road salt eats trailer frames and exhaust hangers, and a walk-under inspection with good lighting became a standard part of every service ticket. That’s the kind of thing that pays for a lift in a year without ever showing up as a line item called “lift.” They did add a second droplight and a set of long-reach ratcheting wrenches, because standing work uses different tools than lying-on-your-back work.

The First Annual Inspection and What We Found

ANSI/ALI guidance calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and we scheduled theirs at month eleven. On a well-used unit in a busy shop, we expect to find three or four things, and we did. The hydraulic fittings at the power unit had a light weep — normal seating settle, snugged and wiped clean. The equalization cables had stretched into their service range and needed adjustment to bring both carriages level within spec, which is completely routine on a first-year unit that’s been cycled thousands of times.

The one item that would have become a problem was anchor torque. Two of the twelve anchors had backed off slightly, almost certainly from the concrete compressing under the base plate during break-in. We re-torqued all of them and marked them with paint witness lines so the shop can eyeball them monthly instead of guessing. We also replaced two arm restraint gears that had worn teeth from being dropped in and out dozens of times a day, and greased the carriage slide blocks. Total parts cost was modest — the kind of number that makes people realize maintenance on a two-post lift annual inspection is cheap insurance rather than a budget line to dread. Downtime was about three hours, scheduled on a Friday afternoon so they lost almost nothing.

Resale and Trade-In Value After Year One

Here’s what surprises owners: a well-maintained two-post holds value better than almost any other piece of shop equipment. A tire changer or an alignment rack goes obsolete when vehicle technology moves. A hydraulic column that lifts 12,000 pounds does the same job in 2035 that it did in 2015. We regularly see ten- and fifteen-year-old Rotary units change hands for a meaningful fraction of new price, and the ones that hold value share three traits: documented annual inspections, original data plates and manuals, and no cut or welded structural steel.

That’s why we tell people to keep the paperwork. When this shop asked about eventually stepping up to an 18,000 lb unit for heavier chassis, the conversation was easy because their existing equipment had a clean inspection history and a serial number we could trace to a current parts catalog. Orphaned brands are where resale dies — if nobody stocks the cables, cylinders, and lock assemblies, the unit is worth scrap plus whatever a hopeful buyer will gamble. Buying automotive two post lifts from a brand with a real parts pipeline is a resale decision as much as a reliability decision. What We’d Tell the Next Shop in Line

If you’re an RV, trailer, or heavy-truck shop looking at automotive two post lifts, buy capacity you don’t need yet. The price gap between a 12,000 lb and a 15,000 lb unit is real but not enormous, and the gap between having enough capacity and not having it is a job you turn away. Measure your tallest regular vehicle with the roof accessories on it before you decide overhead versus baseplate, and measure it in the doorway, not in the middle of the shop where the trusses are higher.

Get the concrete verified before you sign anything. We’ve had to tell people mid-install that their four-inch slab over questionable base needs a cut-and-pour pad, and that’s a conversation nobody enjoys having on a Tuesday morning with a truck full of steel in the driveway. Budget for adapters and extensions — the base unit ships with a general-purpose set, and specialty chassis need specialty pads. Finally, plan your annual inspection into the calendar the day the unit is commissioned. Shops that treat automotive two post lifts as maintained equipment rather than permanent fixtures get fifteen to twenty-five years out of them and sell them for real money.
