An independent shop owner in the Quad Cities called us last spring with a problem we hear constantly: he was doing 30 to 40 oil changes a week on a pair of tired old columns, and every single fluid service meant a technician ducking under a crossbar that was eight inches too low for the crew-cab trucks rolling in. He wanted to know which of the automotive two post lifts we stock would fix it without wrecking his bay layout. That question — baseplate or overhead, and from which manufacturer — is the single most consequential decision a fluid-service shop makes, because it locks in your ceiling clearance, your drive-through path, and your parts availability for the next 20 years. Here’s how we walked him through it.

The Two Configurations, Side by Side

An overhead two-post carries its equalizer cables and hydraulic hose through a beam that spans the top of both columns, typically at 12 to 13 feet depending on model and rise. A baseplate model runs those same cables and the hose through a low steel plate that sits on the floor between the columns, usually a couple of inches tall with a tapered ramp on both sides. Mechanically they lift identically — same carriages, same arms, same cylinders in most product families. The difference is entirely about what’s in the way.

For a fluid-service bay, the overhead layout wins on floor cleanliness. Nothing to trip over, nothing for a drain pan to catch on, nothing for spilled oil to pool behind. That matters more than people expect in a shop where the floor gets mopped twice a day. The tradeoff is vertical clearance: if your building has 11-foot walls or a joist at 11’6″, overhead automotive two post lifts either won’t fit or will limit your rise to the point where a tall tech is still stooping. Baseplate models let you exploit every inch of a low ceiling, and they let you lift a tall van or a dual-rear-wheel truck without worrying about the roof meeting the crossbar. The Quad Cities shop had 14-foot clear span, so we went overhead. A customer up in North Dakota with a 139-inch max height and a 6,000 lb heaviest vehicle had no choice at all — baseplate was the only honest answer.

Why Arm Geometry Decides Your Oil-Change Speed

Fluid service lives or dies on cycle time, and cycle time is mostly arm handling. A symmetric two-post puts both columns directly across from each other and centers the vehicle between them, which means the doors open into the posts on a passenger car. Asymmetric columns rotate roughly 30 degrees and use a short front arm and long rear arm, sliding the cabin back so a driver’s door clears. If your tech has to shimmy sideways out of a Camry every time he sets it, you are paying for that in labor 40 times a week.

Low-profile arms are the other piece. A shop in southern California called us about a 10,000 lb unit specifically because he wanted low-profile arms for the lowered cars in his customer base, and he was right to ask — a standard arm pad that sits at 4.5 inches will not slide under a modern performance sedan without ramps, and ramps add 30 seconds each way plus a scrape risk you’ll pay for out of pocket eventually. Most current automotive two post lifts in the Rotary and Challenger lines offer a low-profile arm package or a three-stage front arm that gets you under 4 inches collapsed. Spend the money there. We have never once had a shop tell us they regretted buying the better arm set, and we’ve had plenty tell us they regretted the cheap one.

Brand History Is a Parts Pipeline in Disguise

People think brand loyalty in lift equipment is nostalgia. It isn’t. It’s a bet on whether you’ll be able to buy a carriage slider block in 2039. Rotary has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s, and that continuity is why we can still source cables, latch assemblies, and cylinder seals for machines installed during the Carter administration. Challenger has a shorter but equally consistent record, with a parts catalog that maps cleanly across generations of their two-post product families.

Compare that to the churn at the bottom of the market. Every few years an import brand shows up, sells hard on price for a while, and then the importer changes or folds, and suddenly nobody can identify the cable your lift needs because it never had a real part number. We get those calls monthly — somebody with a 15-year-old unit, a snapped cable, no data plate, and no manufacturer to ask. Sometimes we can measure and cross-reference it. Sometimes we can’t, and the honest answer is that the lift is scrap. When you compare automotive two post lifts, price out the equipment and then ask a second question: who will still be answering the phone about this thing in 2040? Concrete: The Spec Nobody Reads Until It’s Too Late

A two-post transfers the entire weight of the vehicle plus a substantial overturning moment into four small anchor patterns. That is a lot of load into a very small area of slab. Manufacturer specs for a 10,000 lb unit generally call for a minimum of 4.25 inches of cured 3,000 PSI concrete, and for taller-rise or higher-capacity models the requirement climbs toward 6 inches. Those numbers are not padded for lawyers. They’re what keeps the base plate from rotating and cracking out a cone of concrete under load.

A customer in northern Missouri called us with a 16-foot door, a loft on one side, and “about 5 inches, maybe less” of slab. That “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. We told him what we tell everyone: core it or drill a test hole in the exact anchor location, not the middle of the bay, because slabs thin out toward edges and expansion joints all the time. If it’s short, the fix is a cut-out and pour of a reinforced pad at each column — a day of work and a few hundred dollars in concrete, which is nothing compared to what happens when an anchor pulls under a loaded truck. We’ve also seen shops with radiant heat in the floor where drilling was a nonstarter; in those bays we usually steer toward a four-post or a mobile column setup instead. Capacity Sizing for a Fluid-Service Bay

The single most common mistake we see is buying capacity based on the average vehicle instead of the outlier. A general-service shop in the Quad Cities doing oil and filter work on sedans and half-ton pickups thinks 9,000 pounds is plenty, and for 90 percent of the fleet it is. Then a customer shows up in a three-quarter-ton diesel with a service body and a full fuel tank, and you’re at 8,600 pounds before you count the toolbox. The margin evaporates fast.

Our standing recommendation for general fluid service is 10,000 pounds minimum, and 12,000 if you touch any commercial or fleet work at all. The price gap between a 10K and a 12K column set is real but modest, and the capacity is permanent. On the other end, we get calls from shops asking about 14,000 or 15,000 pound automotive two post lifts for occasional heavy work, and sometimes that’s right — but understand that higher-capacity models are physically wider between the columns, taller, and need more slab. If heavy trucks are a small fraction of your volume, a dedicated heavy bay or a set of mobile columns often serves better than oversizing your daily driver bay. We had a fleet shop tell us they “probably had a 14,000 and definitely a 10,000” and weren’t sure which was which — that’s a sign nobody’s tracking capacity, and it’s how overload incidents happen.

Installation, Anchoring, and the First 90 Days

Installation on a two-post is not complicated, but it is unforgiving of shortcuts. The columns have to be plumb within tight tolerance, the carriages have to be shimmed square to each other, and the equalizer cables have to be tensioned so both sides rise within a fraction of an inch across the full travel. Get any of that wrong and the symptom shows up months later as uneven wear on slider blocks, chattering latches, or one side settling faster than the other under load.

We do our own installs across Iowa and into the surrounding states, and we also ship to plenty of customers who want to set their own — the North Dakota buyer specifically didn’t want install, and that’s a legitimate choice if you have a forklift, a helper, and patience. What we won’t do is pretend the anchor torque spec is optional. Every anchor gets torqued to the manufacturer’s number with a calibrated wrench, and then re-torqued after the first week of use, because concrete relaxes. After that, the maintenance rhythm on automotive two post lifts is simple: daily visual check of cables and arm restraints, monthly lubrication of the carriage slides and cable sheaves, and an annual inspection with the lift loaded. What We’d Actually Buy for a Quad Cities Oil-Service Bay

If a general-service shop with 13-plus feet of clear height called us tomorrow, we’d quote an asymmetric overhead 10,000 or 12,000 pound unit from Rotary or Challenger, with the low-profile three-stage front arm package and screw-pad extensions in the accessory kit. Overhead for the clean floor. Asymmetric so doors clear. Low-profile arms because the car park keeps getting lower every model year. That configuration handles everything from a Civic to an F-250 without drama and holds resale value better than anything else in the category.

If the ceiling is short, or there’s a garage door track in the way, or the shop lifts tall vans and box trucks, we’d flip to a baseplate model in the same capacity and eat the floor plate. It’s the right answer often enough that we keep both in stock. The Quad Cities shop went overhead, and eighteen months in the only service call we’ve had from them was a routine cable adjustment. That’s what a correctly specified lift looks like.
