Most of the bad advice we hear about automotive two post lifts starts with somebody repeating a rule they heard fifteen years ago at a trade show. A shop owner in northern Missouri called us last spring — an EV specialty operation doing high-volume fluid service, reducer oil, coolant flushes, brake fluid, the occasional legacy gas car for a longtime customer. He’d been told flat out that asymmetric was the only sane choice for anything he’d ever roll in, and that symmetric was obsolete. That’s not true, and believing it cost him a month of shopping in the wrong direction. We install and service this equipment across Iowa and the surrounding states every week, and the honest answer depends on your bay, your door, and your mix.

Myth one: asymmetric is always the better choice

The asymmetric design rotates the columns roughly thirty degrees and pairs short front arms with long rear arms, which pushes the vehicle back so the driver’s door clears the column. That’s a real advantage — if your work involves getting in and out of the cab repeatedly. Alignment shops, interior electrical diagnostics, anybody pulling codes with a scan tool from the driver’s seat. For a fluid-service operation where the tech is under the car with a drain pan and never touches the door, that benefit shrinks to almost nothing.

What asymmetric costs you is reach. Short front arms have less range, and on a long-wheelbase EV truck or a full-size van you can run out of adjustment before you find a lift point. The northern Missouri shop we mentioned runs a mix that includes an electric pickup and a couple of commercial vans, and asymmetric arms would have been fighting him on both. Symmetric automotive two post lifts split the load evenly, four arms of comparable length, and handle long vehicles without drama. The tradeoff is a tighter door opening. We’ve had techs work symmetric bays for twenty years and never think twice about it — they open the door before the car goes up, or they exit before lifting. It’s a workflow habit, not a design flaw.

Myth two: capacity is the only number that matters

Everybody fixates on the plate. Ten thousand pounds, twelve, fourteen. We get calls where the entire conversation is about capacity and nothing else, and then the install crew shows up and discovers the ceiling is 11 feet with a garage door track running exactly where the overhead beam wants to live. Capacity is the easiest spec to satisfy and the least likely to be your constraint. A 10,000 lb unit covers virtually every passenger vehicle and light truck on the road, including most current EVs, which are heavy but not that heavy.

The numbers that actually decide your purchase are ceiling height, door height, slab thickness, and rebar depth. One caller told us his concrete was about five inches but might be less — that single sentence changed his whole options list. Most automotive two post lifts require a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many manufacturers want more for higher capacities. If you’re unsure, core it or have someone test it. We’d rather tell you to pour a pad now than come back after a column tries to pull anchors out of thin crete. Ceiling height matters too: a clearfloor model needs headroom for the overhead crossbeam, typically around 12 feet for a full-rise unit. Under that, you’re looking at baseplate.

Myth three: baseplate lifts are the cheap compromise

We hear this constantly, and it’s lazy thinking. Baseplate designs route the equalizing cables and hydraulic hose through a low steel plate across the floor between the columns instead of over the top. That plate is maybe an inch and a half tall with a ramped profile, and yes, you’ll roll a floor jack over it. In exchange you get unlimited overhead clearance — no crossbeam, no height limit on what you can raise, no fighting a door track.

A Grand Forks-area shop we quoted had a hard 139-inch ceiling limit and needed to lift nothing heavier than 6,000 pounds. Baseplate was the obvious answer, not a downgrade. For oil and fluid service specifically, the low plate matters even less than people fear, because your drain pans and fluid carts live under the car, not between the columns. Where baseplate genuinely bites is if you sweep and mop constantly, or if you’re rolling heavy transmission jacks side to side all day. The other thing worth knowing: baseplate columns carry more of the twisting load themselves, so anchor quality and slab quality matter even more. We’ve pulled and reset baseplate columns that were installed into a slab nobody bothered to check. Don’t be that shop.

What EV fluid service actually demands from the arms

EV work changed our arm conversations more than anything else in the last decade. Battery packs run nearly the full footprint of the floor pan on most platforms, which means the pinch weld and designated jack points are the only places you can put an arm — and the pack shroud often hangs low enough that a standard arm pad can’t get in there. Low-profile arms with stackable adapters are not a luxury on an EV bay, they’re the whole job.

One customer in California asked us specifically about low-profile arms for a 10,000 lb unit, and we walked him through pad heights, drop-in adapters, and truck adapters in the same call. The answer for most EV specialty shops is a symmetric or asymmetric configuration with three-stage or telescoping arms, the lowest available pad height, and a small kit of extensions you keep on a shelf. We stock those adapters for every major brand and can look up the right part number from your serial tag. It’s also worth thinking about pack access: if you ever plan to drop a battery, automotive two post lifts leave the underside wide open in a way a 4-post never will, which is exactly why so many EV shops keep at least two of these bays. That open access is the single strongest argument for two-post in an electric-focused shop.

The mistake we see most: buying on sticker price alone

A gentleman in northern Missouri told us straight out he didn’t feel the need to spend ten grand on a lift, but if we could sell him on it, he’d probably buy new. We appreciated the honesty, so here’s ours. The cheapest imported two-post you can find online will lift a car. It will also arrive with a hydraulic power unit nobody stocks parts for, a cable set with proprietary end fittings, and a manual that lists a support number that goes to voicemail. Three years later when a cable frays you’re buying a whole new lift.

That’s the actual cost math on automotive two post lifts. We keep cables, sheaves, cylinders, latch assemblies, arm pads, and power units on the shelf for Rotary and Challenger because those platforms have been in production long enough that parts pipelines exist and stay stable. We’ve also seen the resale side — a well-maintained Rotary SPO from the nineties still moves for real money, while off-brand units get scrapped. Buy the platform you can feed for fifteen years, not the one that’s cheapest this Tuesday.

Installation realities: anchors, shimming, and the stuff nobody photographs

The install is where good equipment goes bad. Columns have to be plumb, and no slab is perfectly flat, so you shim — but shims have to be full-bearing steel stacks under the base, not a couple of washers jammed under one corner. Manufacturers publish a maximum shim thickness for a reason, usually around half an inch, and past that you’re supposed to grind or pour. We’ve walked into bays where somebody stacked five shims and called it good, and the column had visible lean under load.

Anchor torque is the other one. Wedge anchors need to be set to spec with a torque wrench, then re-checked after the first few weeks of cycling, and again annually. If an anchor won’t hold torque, that’s a slab problem and no amount of retorquing fixes it. Cable tension on both sides has to be equal so the carriages rise together and the safety latches engage in the same slot — uneven cables are the most common reason a lift clunks or refuses to lock evenly. We check all of it on every install and on every annual inspection, and we’d rather do the inspection than the accident report. How we spec a bay in one phone call

Here’s the short list we run through, and you can gather it before you dial. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Door opening height and width. Slab thickness and age, plus whether there’s radiant heat tubing in the floor — one customer specifically confirmed no heat in his floor, and that’s a question we always ask, because you cannot drill blindly into a heated slab. Bay width from wall to wall or wall to the next lift, and any lofts, mezzanines, or overhead storage. Then your vehicle mix: heaviest vehicle, longest wheelbase, lowest ground clearance.

From there we can tell you clearfloor or baseplate, symmetric or asymmetric, capacity, arm style, and what adapters you’ll want on day one. If your slab or ceiling rules out a two-post entirely, we’ll say so and point you at a 4-post or a mid-rise scissor instead — we’d rather lose a sale than install something wrong.
