They’d been doing strut assemblies on ramps and a floor jack for years, the way grandfather did it, and the son who runs the place now finally added up the labor hours lost per job. We walked the building with him, measured the ceiling to the low point of a truss, checked the slab thickness with a core sample, and priced out both a new asymmetric unit and a reconditioned one. Why Suspension Work Demands a Two-Post, Not a Drive-On

Suspension and shock replacement is wheels-free work. You need the control arms hanging, the springs unloaded, and the wheel off so you can reach the top strut nut and the lower ball joint. A four-post keeps the tires on the runways, which is exactly wrong for this job unless you add a rolling jack — and then you’re paying for two pieces of equipment and still fighting for access. That’s the core reason the Cedar Falls shop landed on a two-post. Their bread and butter is struts on high-mileage sedans and control arm bushings on half-ton pickups, and every one of those jobs starts with the wheels in the air.

The other advantage is body access. With a swing arm design, the technician stands under the rocker with a clear shot at the subframe, the sway bar end links, and the rear shock mounts. There’s no runway blocking the sightline and no crossmember in the way of a transmission jack. On the truck jobs the shop does most often, the tech can drop a coil spring straight down without repositioning anything. When we set up automotive two post lifts for suspension-heavy shops, we spec the arms first and the capacity second, because a 10,000 lb unit with short reach front arms will frustrate a strut tech far more than a slightly lower weight rating ever will.

The Real Dimensions: What We Measured in Cedar Falls

Their building is an older masonry shop with a wood truss roof. Ceiling to the bottom of the lowest truss chord measured 12 feet 4 inches at the worst point in the bay. That killed the overhead-beam clearfloor design they’d been looking at online, because a standard 10,000 lb clearfloor column with an overhead crossbar wants roughly 12 feet of true clearance plus room for the shutoff bar and the hose runs. We measured again at three points along the intended bay, since old buildings sag, and the lowest reading is the one that matters.

So we went baseplate. A baseplate two-post routes the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a low channel across the floor between the columns, which drops the overall height requirement to whatever the column itself needs — typically 9 to 11 feet depending on the model and rise. The tradeoff is a floor plate you drive over, which their shop tolerated fine since they don’t roll heavy jacks across that bay. Bay width came in at 14 feet 2 inches between the wall and a support post, which is workable for a 10,000 lb unit needing about 12 feet of column spread plus door swing. Slab was 5 inches of decent 3,000 PSI concrete — right at minimum for most automotive two post lifts, and we recommended a small anchor-zone pour for peace of mind.

Capacity: Why 10,000 lb Was Enough and 12,000 Was Not Needed

Everybody wants to buy more capacity than they need. We hear it on almost every call — a shop tells us the heaviest thing they touch is a 6,000 lb crew cab, then asks about a 14,000 lb unit. Capacity costs money in three places: the lift itself, the concrete requirement, and the ceiling height, since higher-capacity columns are physically taller. The Cedar Falls shop’s heaviest regular customer vehicle was a three-quarter ton pickup around 7,800 lbs. A 10,000 lb rating gives them margin without pushing them into a 6-inch slab requirement they’d have had to cut and repour.

Where we do push customers up in capacity is when the vehicle mix is shifting. Half-ton trucks have gained roughly 800 lbs over the last fifteen years, and EV sedans routinely land between 4,800 and 5,600 lbs with the battery pack low and centered. If a shop tells us they’re taking on more fleet trucks or hybrid SUVs, 12,000 lb makes sense and the price step is modest. What almost never makes sense is buying capacity to feel safe about a lift you don’t trust — if you’re worried about a lift dropping a car, the answer is a properly rated, properly anchored, properly inspected unit, not an oversized one. Every one of the automotive two post lifts we install gets torque-checked anchors and a full cycle test before we hand over the keys.

Used vs New: The Decision Framework We Gave Them

We sell both, and we’re honest about it. A reconditioned two-post from a known commercial brand can be a genuinely good buy — the structural steel on a Rotary or Challenger column doesn’t wear out in fifteen years. What wears out is everything soft: cables, sheaves, hydraulic seals, arm restraint gears, lock ladders, and the safety latches. Those are all replaceable, and we stock the parts. So the used question isn’t really “is the steel good.” It’s “how much of the soft stuff needs replacing, and does the total land under a new unit’s price.”

Here’s the framework we handed the Cedar Falls owner. First, is the manufacturer still supporting the model with parts? If the answer is no, walk away no matter how cheap it is. Second, add up cables, both cylinders reseal or replaced, arm restraints, and a full lock assembly rebuild — if that total exceeds roughly half the cost of a comparable new unit, buy new. Third, factor the labor to pull it from the seller’s floor, which is real money and often overlooked. Fourth, ask whether you’ll get a warranty and an installation certification, because in Iowa an uninspected used lift with no paper trail is an insurance conversation you don’t want. They ran the numbers and bought new. Another shop we serve in the same county ran the identical framework on automotive two post lifts and bought reconditioned, and both decisions were right.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms for Strut and Shock Access

This is the detail that changes a suspension technician’s day more than any spec on the brochure. A symmetric two-post centers the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms, which spreads weight evenly and handles long-wheelbase trucks well, but it puts the door pillars right at the columns. On a sedan, that means the tech opens the door into a steel post. An asymmetric design rotates the columns and uses shorter front arms and longer rear arms, sitting the vehicle back so the doors clear the posts.

For a strut shop, asymmetric usually wins. The tech is in and out of the driver’s seat constantly — releasing the parking brake, checking a warning light, turning the wheel to reach a tie rod. Fighting the door on every cycle adds up. The Cedar Falls shop went asymmetric with a 30-degree column rotation. Where symmetric still makes sense is a heavy-truck-first shop or a bay where the vehicle needs to sit dead center for a long-bed dually to clear the rear of the bay. Some models split the difference with adjustable columns and versymmetric arm sets, which we like for mixed-fleet work. When we quote automotive two post lifts we always ask what percentage of the work is cars versus trucks, because that ratio picks the arm geometry, and the arm geometry is what the tech lives with for the next twenty years. Concrete, Anchoring, and the Cedar Falls Slab Problem

Old Iowa shop floors are a lottery. We’ve drilled into 8 inches of beautiful reinforced concrete and, twenty feet away in the same building, hit 3 inches over gravel where somebody patched a drain trench in 1978. That’s why we core-sample rather than trust a customer’s guess. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete at least 28 days cured, with a minimum distance from expansion joints and slab edges. The Cedar Falls bay measured 5 inches consistently across the anchor footprint, which cleared the spec for their model.

Where the slab fails, the fix is a cut-out and pour — typically a pad several feet square and 8 to 12 inches deep per column, tied into the existing slab with rebar dowels. It adds a week to the timeline and a meaningful line item to the budget, and it is not optional. Anchor pullout is the single most preventable catastrophic failure mode on any two-post, and we’ve been called to inspect enough sheared wedge anchors to have strong opinions. We torque every anchor to the manufacturer’s spec, mark them, and re-check at the 30-day follow-up. What Installation and Ownership Actually Look Like

A straightforward baseplate install in a prepped bay is a one-day job for our two-man crew — columns set and plumbed, floor plate anchored, hydraulics connected and bled, cables tensioned and equalized, power wired to the motor, then a full cycle test with a loaded vehicle at every lock position. We check that both columns lock simultaneously, that the arm restraints engage, and that the overload bypass functions. Then we walk the shop staff through daily and monthly checks and leave the manual where they’ll actually find it.

Ownership after that is genuinely light. Weekly: eyeball the cables for broken strands and fraying near the sheaves, check the lock engagement, look for hydraulic weeping. Monthly: grease the column slide blocks and the arm pivots, check anchor torque the first few months. Annually: a documented inspection, fluid level and condition, sheave and cable measurement. Cables are the wear item people ignore longest and they’re cheap relative to a failure — we keep them on the shelf for the common models. Price-wise, expect entry-level 10,000 lb units in the low single-digit thousands, quality commercial-grade in the mid-to-upper single digits, and installation running a modest fraction of the equipment cost when the concrete cooperates.
