A mobile mechanic working out of a service van in east-central Iowa called us last year with a problem most one-truck operations eventually hit: he was doing forty to fifty tire rotations a week on customer driveways, his knees were done, and winter had cost him three weeks of billable days. The Starting Point: A Van, a Jack, and a Bad Back
Mobile work is a real business model and it pays well until your body files a complaint. Our caller had built a solid route: fleet accounts, a couple of small used-car lots, and a steady stream of residential rotation and seasonal swap customers. The trouble is that everything takes twice as long on the ground. A four-wheel rotation with a torque check is fifteen minutes on a lift and forty in a gravel driveway with a bottle jack, and you can’t do brake work in the rain at all. He’d been turning down rotor and caliper jobs because he had nowhere to do them.
The building he leased was a former implement dealer’s parts shed — 40 by 50, twelve-foot overhead doors, and a slab of unknown vintage. His stated budget was modest and his instinct was to buy the cheapest 9,000 lb unit he could find online and bolt it down himself. We hear that plan a lot. Sometimes it’s fine. In his case, the volume of work he intended to run through that bay — realistically fifteen to twenty vehicles a day during changeover season — put him well past hobby-duty territory. Automotive two post lifts get evaluated on cycles, not on years, and a lift doing eighteen ups and downs a day is doing more work in one season than a home unit sees in a decade.
Why We Pushed Him Toward ALI Gold Certification
The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program in which independent labs test lift designs against ANSI/ALI standards for load capacity, stability, lowering speed, safety-lock function, and the adequacy of the manuals and labeling. A Gold Label on a lift means that specific model, in that specific configuration, passed. It is not a manufacturer self-declaration and it is not a marketing sticker you can buy. If a lift doesn’t carry the label, no one outside the factory has verified it holds what the plate says it holds.
For a solo operator with no employees, the immediate compliance pressure is low. But two things changed his thinking. First, he wanted fleet accounts, and the larger fleet contracts in this part of the state ask about certified equipment during vendor onboarding — it’s a line item on their insurance questionnaire. Second, his commercial general liability carrier asked what equipment was in the building. Having certified automotive two post lifts on the schedule made that conversation short. There’s also the plain safety math: he’s going to be standing under vehicles alone, at night, with nobody in the building. We’d rather he do that under a tested design. The cost difference between a certified Rotary or Challenger unit and a no-name import turned out to be far less than he assumed once shipping and the missing install hardware were counted.
Coring the Slab Before We Ordered Anything
Old ag buildings in Iowa have unpredictable floors. Before we quoted a model, we drove out and pulled two cores where the columns would sit. We got five and a quarter inches of decent concrete on one side and just under four on the other, with a visible seam suggesting the shed had been extended at some point. That’s a common finding and it’s why we don’t quote a lift install sight-unseen when the building is older than the person calling us.
The fix was straightforward. On the thin side we saw-cut a four-by-four foot section, excavated to about fourteen inches, tied rebar into the surrounding slab with epoxy dowels, and poured 4,000 PSI mix. Then we waited the full cure window before drilling anchors. That waiting period frustrates people who want the bay running Monday, but anchor pullout is the number one preventable failure mode on automotive two post lifts and it almost always traces back to either thin concrete or anchors set in green pour. We also checked slab levelness across the bay — a slope of more than a couple degrees means shimming the columns, and every shim stack has a manufacturer limit you can’t exceed. Spec’ing for Tire and Wheel Work Specifically
Tire work has different priorities than general repair. You want the vehicle up fast, at a comfortable height, with wheels completely unobstructed and arms that don’t interfere with an impact gun swinging at the hub. That pushed a few decisions. We went 10,000 lb capacity rather than 9,000 — the extra margin costs little and the heavier column and carriage hold up better under high cycle counts. We went asymmetric so door clearance is generous, because on a rotation day you’re opening and closing driver’s doors constantly to check TPMS relearns and move the vehicle.
Arm selection mattered most. Three-stage telescoping front arms with low-profile pads let him get under lowered cars and still reach the rear lift points on a crew-cab pickup without swapping adapters. We added a set of stackable pad adapters and truck adapters, because half his fleet work is half-tons. We also specced the power unit column on the side where his air compressor already lived, so the air-release line for the safety locks was a short run. Finally, we mounted the lift so the front of a typical sedan clears the overhead door track when it’s raised — a detail people miss until the first time a bumper meets a door. Install Day and the First Ninety Days
The actual install ran about six hours once the footing had cured. Two of us set the columns, plumbed and squared them, drilled and torqued the anchors to spec, ran the hydraulic lines and equalization cables, connected the power unit to the dedicated 220V circuit his electrician had dropped the week before, bled the system, and ran the full cycle test. Then we loaded a vehicle and ran it through the range multiple times, checking lock engagement at every position and verifying that both carriages rose evenly.
We handed off the ALI documentation, the manufacturer’s manual, and a short written maintenance routine: daily visual check of cables and arm restraints, weekly cleanup of the columns and a look at fluid level, monthly torque check on the anchors for the first quarter, and cable tension inspection at the intervals in the manual. Ninety days later he called for a check-in and reported he was averaging nineteen vehicles a day during the fall changeover and had picked up two small fleet accounts that specifically asked about certified equipment. He also mentioned he’d stopped taking ibuprofen every night, which is the metric that probably matters most. Automotive two post lifts don’t make you a better mechanic, but they multiply the work a single set of hands can turn out in a day.

Maintenance Habits That Keep a High-Cycle Bay Running
Tire shops beat equipment harder than anyone realizes, and the failure points are predictable. Equalization cables stretch and need periodic adjustment — if one carriage starts lagging, that’s your signal, not a reason to wait. Arm restraint gears wear from constant repositioning; if an arm swings freely when it shouldn’t, stop using it until it’s replaced. Hydraulic fluid gets contaminated over time and cheap fluid takes seals out early. Anchor bolts should be re-torqued periodically, especially in the first year.
