Automotive two post lifts are the single best purchase most vehicle collectors make, and they are also the purchase people agonize over the longest. We spent most of a winter trading emails with a collector outside Waterloo who kept four cars in rotation — a 1960s coupe, two 1990s sports cars, and a daily driver that hauls a trailer. He wanted to stop crawling around on creeper boards and he wanted to do his own wheel bearing work. What he could not decide on was symmetric or asymmetric arms. That decision drove everything else: column placement, door clearance, how far his car doors would swing, and whether he could still walk around the front of a car with a wheel off. Here is how that first year went, start to finish.

Why a Collector Ends Up Shopping Two-Post Instead of Four-Post

Collectors usually start out convinced they want a four-post, because four-posts store cars and storage is the emotional driver. Then they think about what they actually plan to do with the car once it is in the air. Brake jobs, suspension bushings, exhaust work, and wheel bearings all want the wheels hanging free and the underside completely open. A four-post gives you a beautiful drive-on platform and then puts runways directly under the rocker panels, right where you need to reach. That is why the conversation so often circles back around to two-post equipment.

The Waterloo collector went through exactly that arc. He had a 30×50 building with a 14-foot ceiling and plenty of floor, so storage was not his bottleneck — access was. He was going to do his own wheel bearing replacement on a car that had started making noise on the highway, and pressing a hub out means having room to swing a slide hammer and set a jack stand. We told him what we tell everybody in that spot: buy the lift that matches the work, and solve storage separately with a second unit or a smarter floor layout. He bought one of our 10,000 lb columns and never mentioned four-post again. A year later he told us the only thing he regretted was not doing it three years sooner, which is the most common review we get on any of the automotive two post lifts we install.

Symmetric Arms: What They Do Well

A symmetric lift places the columns directly across from each other, with all four arms roughly the same length, and the vehicle sits centered between the posts. Roughly half the car is in front of the columns and half behind. That geometry is simple, it loads the columns evenly, and it is the traditional layout you see in older shops and in most truck-rated equipment. If you regularly lift long-wheelbase trucks, dually pickups, or vans, symmetric is usually the right answer because the load stays balanced front to rear.

The trade-off is door swing. With the car centered, the B-pillar sits close to the column, so on a two-door coupe with a long door you are opening into the post. Collectors with older cars — which often have enormous doors — feel this immediately. Our Waterloo customer measured his coupe’s door at just over four feet and realized he would be squeezing sideways every single time. That is not a deal-breaker if you only get in and out to reposition the car, but if you sit in the driver’s seat to bleed brakes or run the engine while it is on the lift, it wears on you fast. This is the exact reason asymmetric designs exist, and it is the first thing we ask about when someone calls in about automotive two post lifts for a personal collection rather than a commercial bay.

Asymmetric Arms and the 30-Degree Column Rotation

Asymmetric lifts do two things at once: they rotate the columns about 30 degrees toward the front of the bay, and they use short front arms with longer rear arms. The result is that the car sits farther back between the posts, the B-pillar clears the column, and the driver’s door opens wide. On a Rotary SPOA10 or an equivalent asymmetric model, a collector can open a wide coupe door almost fully and step out normally. For someone who is in and out of the car constantly, that is the feature that matters most.

The catch is loading. Because more of the vehicle mass sits behind the columns, asymmetric designs are rated with an assumption about weight distribution, typically around a third front and two-thirds rear. That is fine for passenger cars and most light trucks. It is not fine if you plan to hoist a heavy-nose diesel pickup or a cargo van loaded with tools. We have pulled cars off asymmetric lifts that were positioned badly, with the arms fighting each other because someone drove too far forward out of habit. Positioning discipline matters more on asymmetric equipment than on symmetric. Our Waterloo collector went asymmetric because his heaviest vehicle was a 5,400 lb daily driver, and a year later he has had zero issues — but he still marks his floor with tape so every car lands in the same spot.

Install Day: Concrete, Ceiling, and Anchors

Install day is where a lot of purchases go sideways, and almost always for one reason: concrete. Two-post equipment concentrates the entire vehicle load into eight to ten anchor bolts. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, and many 12,000 lb and larger models want more than that. We have shown up to installs where the slab was a nominal four inches at the door and closer to three in the middle — that is a saw-cut-and-pour situation, not a drill-and-go.

The Waterloo building had a five-inch slab poured for equipment, so anchoring was straightforward. We hammer-drilled, vacuumed the holes properly (a step people skip, and skipped holes cost you anchor holding power), set the wedge anchors, and torqued to spec. Then we shimmed the columns plumb, because a column leaning even slightly out makes the carriage bind under load and chews up slide blocks over the first year. Ceiling was the other check: he had 14 feet, so an overhead-style unit with the equalizer bar up top was fine. If he had been at 11 feet with a tall SUV, we would have moved him to a baseplate model with the cables running through a floor plate instead. We size all our automotive two post lifts against a real ceiling measurement, not a guess, because you only get one shot at that.

The First Wheel Bearing Job

About four months in, that highway noise turned into a real diagnosis: a failed front hub bearing. He called us before starting, mostly to ask about lift height and safety locks, and we walked him through it. He raised the car to about chest height, dropped it onto the nearest lock position, and gave the vehicle the standard shake test at the arms before putting a wrench on anything. That habit — always settle onto a lock, always shake it — is worth more than any accessory you can buy.

With the wheel off and the car at working height, the job that would have taken him a full weekend on jack stands took an afternoon. He could stand upright, get a breaker bar on the axle nut with real leverage, and swing a slide hammer without hitting the floor. The bigger win was inspection: with the whole underside visible at eye level, he found a cracked sway bar end link boot and a weeping rear shock on the same car. That is the quiet benefit nobody advertises — automotive two post lifts turn every service job into a full inspection, because you actually see the vehicle instead of squinting at a six-inch window between the tire and the fender. He replaced all three items in one session and put the car back on the road with confidence he had never had before.

Maintenance the First Year: Cables, Locks, and Grease

A collector’s lift lives an easy life compared to a shop unit that cycles forty times a day, but easy does not mean maintenance-free. In fact, low-cycle equipment has its own failure mode: things sit, dry out, and corrode. We told him to put a recurring reminder on his phone. Monthly, he wipes down and lubricates the equalizer cables with a light penetrating oil and looks for broken strands, especially near the sheaves where cables flex most. Quarterly he greases the carriage slide blocks and checks that both lock ladders engage at the same time.

Annually he checks anchor bolt torque — new concrete relaxes a little and anchors can back off in the first year — and inspects the hydraulic cylinder for weeping past the rod seal. He also raises the lift empty to full height and listens. A lift that clacks unevenly through the locks or drifts down when the power unit shuts off is telling you something, and it is cheaper to catch it in the driveway than to find out with a car in the air. What We Would Tell the Next Collector Who Calls

If you store and service your own vehicles, start by writing down three numbers: the heaviest vehicle you own, the tallest vehicle you own, and your usable ceiling height. Those three numbers eliminate more than half the catalog before anyone talks about brands. Then answer one question honestly — do you get in and out of the car while it is up? If yes, go asymmetric. If you lift long trucks or vans, go symmetric. If you do both, we sometimes recommend a versymmetric-style design that offers both arm configurations in one frame, which is a reasonable compromise for a mixed collection.

After that, spend your money on the things you cannot upgrade later: capacity, column height, and the quality of the lock and cable hardware. Arm pads, truck adapters, and rolling jacks can all be added down the road. A slab that will not hold anchors and a lift that is 2,000 lb short cannot.
