A collector outside Marion called us in February with a question we hear constantly: should he buy used or new when it comes to automotive two post lifts? He had four vehicles in various states of restoration, a 40×60 shed with decent concrete, and a budget that would stretch to a brand-new asymmetric column setup or two clean used ones. He wanted the second one for metal work — rockers, floor pans, cab corners, all the stuff that goes faster when the car is at chest height instead of on jack stands. We drove up, looked at his slab, listened to what he actually did in that building, and gave him a straight answer. This article walks through that whole first year, from the decision to the first service call.

Why a Collector Needs Different Things Than a Shop

A production shop cares about cycle time. A tech doing eight oil changes and four brake jobs a day wants arms that swing fast, a rise that takes under 45 seconds, and enough drive-through width to whip a truck in without thinking about it. A collector cares about something entirely different: how long can a car sit up in the air, and how comfortable is it to work under for six hours straight while grinding, welding, and fitting sheet metal. Those are different priorities, and they push the decision on automotive two post lifts in a different direction.

For the Marion project, the big one was clearance. He is 6’3″. A lift that tops out at 69 inches of rise means he is hunched the whole time he is welding a floor pan, and hunching leads to bad welds and a bad back. We steered him toward a taller column with a full 72-plus inches of lift height and a low-profile arm package so he could still get under a slammed second-gen Camaro. The other consideration was column style. He had a wall on one side and a mezzanine loft on the other — same story we heard from a customer in northern Missouri who had a 16-foot door, a loft on the left, and a wall on the right. Overhead beams eat headroom you may need for a convertible top or a hood held open on a strut. Baseplate keeps the top clear but puts a hose channel across the floor you will roll a creeper over a thousand times. Neither is wrong. It depends on what is above and around you.

The Used vs New Framework We Actually Use

Here is the honest version. A used lift is a fine buy when three things are true: you can identify the manufacturer and model, the columns are straight with no impact damage, and the parts pipeline for that model is still alive. If any one of those fails, walk away, because you are not buying a lift, you are buying a 3,000-pound puzzle.

We see this pattern every month. Somebody buys a 20-year-old unit off an auction for a fraction of new money, gets it home, and then discovers the carriage slider blocks are shot, the equalizer cables are frayed at the sheave, and the manufacturer went out of business in 2009. Now the sunk cost is climbing and there is no drawing to work from. On the other hand, we regularly service used Rotary and Challenger columns from the 1990s where every wear part is still a stocked item — cables, arm pins, lock ladders, cylinder seals, latch springs. That is the difference. Brand continuity is worth more than model year on the used market for automotive two post lifts. The Marion collector ended up buying one new unit and one carefully vetted used unit, which is what we usually recommend when the budget is split. New goes where the heavy, frequent work happens. Used goes where a car parks for three months while a quarter panel gets fabricated. He paid well under half of new money for the second column set, and we replaced both cable assemblies before it ever held a vehicle.

What the Concrete Told Us

Before we quoted anything we cored his slab. This is not optional and we do not skip it, because anchoring is where a good install becomes a safe install. The published minimum for most 10,000 lb two-post equipment is 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and a lot of Iowa farm shops have exactly that at the center and considerably less at the edges where the pour thinned out or where a floor drain was cut in.

His building came back at 5 inches near the middle bay, which was fine, and just over 3 inches within six feet of the overhead door. That mattered because his instinct was to set the columns close to the door for easy drive-in. We moved the layout back nine feet. If we had not, the anchors near the door would have been in shallow, uncured-edge concrete that spalls under load. A customer in a small Missouri town told us his slab was “about 5 inches but may be less,” and that hedge is exactly the situation where a core test pays for itself. When the concrete is not adequate, the fix is a poured pad — typically a 12-inch-deep, reinforced footing under each column, cured 28 days before anchoring. That adds a couple weeks and some cost, but it is a one-time expense that outlives the equipment. Skipping it is how columns lean and how cars fall. We do not install automotive two post lifts on questionable concrete, period, and we will tell you no if that is the honest answer.

Install Day and the First 30 Days

Install on his primary column set took most of a day. Two of us set columns, plumbed the power unit, shimmed for plumb, torqued anchors to spec, bled the cylinder, and ran the lift through a full cycle empty before anything with wheels went near it. Then we cycled it under load and checked lock engagement at every latch position on both sides. That last step catches more problems than anything else, and it takes ten minutes.

The break-in period on any new hydraulic setup is real. In the first month you will lose a little fluid volume as air works out of the system, and the arm restraints will feel stiff until the gears seat. We told him to expect to top off the reservoir once and to re-torque the anchors after roughly 30 cycles, because concrete relaxes slightly around a fresh wedge anchor. He did both. We also walked him through the daily habit that keeps automotive two post lifts safe for decades: check that both locks audibly click into the same notch before you go under, look at the cable at the top sheave once a week, and grease the arm pins twice a year. That is the entire maintenance program for most owners. It takes less time than checking tire pressure on a fleet truck, and it is the reason a 30-year-old column set can still be in service in a Cedar Rapids shop today while a five-year-old neglected one is scrap.

The First Service Call: A Cable and a Slow Drift

Ten months in he called us with a symptom we hear a lot: the driver-side carriage was sitting about a half inch lower than the passenger side at full height, and overnight the whole thing crept down maybe an inch. Two separate problems, and it is worth separating them because owners often assume it is all one failure.

The height difference was the equalizer cable on the used column set stretching into its final length — normal for a fresh cable, and a 15-minute adjustment at the take-up nut. The overnight drift was a different animal. Hydraulic drift almost always traces to one of three places: a leaking cylinder piston seal, a check valve in the power unit that is not seating, or a line fitting weeping under static pressure. We pressure-tested and found a slightly scored cylinder rod on the used unit that was passing fluid past the seal. We rebuilt it on site with a seal kit and the drift stopped. Total downtime, one afternoon. That is the payoff of buying a used lift with a live parts pipeline: the failure was a stocked seal kit, not an engineering project. If he had bought an orphan brand, that same failure would have meant either a custom cylinder fabrication or a dead lift. We keep cylinders, cables, latch assemblies, and power units on the shelf for exactly this reason, and you can look up what fits your serial number through our online parts store.

What Restoration and Metal Work Demand From the Equipment

Restoration work punishes equipment differently than general repair. Grinding dust gets into everything. Weld spatter lands on hydraulic hoses. Cars sit at height for weeks, which means the locks carry static load far longer than the designers assumed in an average duty cycle. A collector should plan for all three.

Our practical advice for that Marion shop: run a cheap fire blanket or sheet-metal shield over the hose run when you are welding above it, blow the carriage slider area out with air every month instead of every year, and never leave a car at height on hydraulic pressure alone — always let it settle onto the mechanical locks. That last point is worth repeating because it is where the safety margin lives. The hydraulic system holds the car while you raise it; the steel latches hold it while you work. When a vehicle is going to sit for a month during a floor-pan fabrication, we also like to see a pair of tall jack stands set under the frame as a backup, not because the locks will fail, but because a shop with a mezzanine, a forklift, and a lot of foot traffic has more opportunities for something to bump a column. What We Would Tell the Next Collector

If you are in eastern Iowa with a shed, a few project cars, and a number in your head, start with the building, not the catalog. Measure ceiling height at the lowest point, not the peak. Note where the door header, lights, and any loft framing sit. Find out what your concrete actually is. Decide honestly whether you need drive-through access or whether you are fine walking around the columns. Those four answers narrow the field of automotive two post lifts faster than any spec sheet comparison.

Then be realistic about capacity. Most collectors overbuy. If your heaviest vehicle is a 6,000 lb three-quarter-ton pickup, a 10,000 lb lift has plenty of margin — you do not need 14,000 unless you are putting duallies or a loaded work truck up regularly. We had a customer in North Dakota looking at a 9,000 lb baseplate model with a 6,000 lb heaviest vehicle, and that was a genuinely appropriate match. Overbuying costs money and, on a low ceiling, can cost you usable rise. Underbuying is worse, so when in doubt go one tier up, but do not go three. The Marion collector is now a year in with two working column sets, one new and one used, and his total spend came in under what a single top-tier commercial unit would have run him. That is what a good decision framework looks like — not the cheapest option, and not the most expensive, but the one that matches the building, the cars, and the work.
