A restoration shop owner out near the Iowa-Nebraska border called us a while back because he’d finally gotten tired of dropping oil pans on his back. He was doing a run of small-block engine gasket work, and every one of those jobs meant creeper time, jack stands, and a full day burned. He wanted one of the automotive two post lifts he’d been looking at online for two years. What he hadn’t thought about was how a 2,200-pound crated lift was going to get off a semi trailer and into his shop on a gravel approach twelve miles from the nearest town. That conversation is the reason we wrote this: the buying decision is only half the job, and the freight half is where most first-time buyers get blindsided.

Start With the Heaviest Vehicle, Not the Prettiest Spec Sheet

The first branch of the decision tree is capacity, and it’s the one people overthink in the wrong direction. We get calls all the time from someone who wants a 15,000 lb lift because it sounds safer, when the heaviest thing they’ll ever put on it is a 6,000 lb pickup. Extra capacity isn’t free — it means taller columns, heavier arms that are harder to swing, higher price, and often more concrete requirement. Meanwhile a restoration shop working on ’60s and ’70s iron rarely sees anything over 5,000 pounds curb weight, and even a full-frame land yacht comes in well under a 10,000 lb rating.

Our rule of thumb: take your heaviest realistic vehicle, add a 25 to 30 percent cushion, and buy the nearest standard capacity above that. For nearly every general repair or restoration shop, that lands on 10,000 lb, which is also the most competitively priced tier and the easiest to get parts for. Step up to 12,000 or 15,000 only if you’re regularly taking in three-quarter and one-ton trucks, dually pickups, or box vans. On the other end, we don’t recommend going below 9,000 even for a purely car-only shop, because the savings are small and resale on a low-capacity unit is weak. Where capacity genuinely matters more than the number is in the arm design — asymmetric versus symmetric — and we’ll get to why that decides more about your daily life than the rating on the column plate does.

Symmetric or Asymmetric: The Branch That Changes Your Doors

Once capacity is settled, the next fork is arm configuration. Symmetric lifts have four arms of equal length and place the vehicle centered between the columns, splitting the weight evenly. Asymmetric lifts use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, with the columns rotated inward, so the vehicle sits farther back — which means the driver’s door opens past the column instead of into it. For a restoration shop where you’re getting in and out of a car twenty times a day to check clearances, that door swing is not a small thing.

The tradeoff is loading. Asymmetric setups want the vehicle positioned with roughly a 30/70 front-to-rear split, and if you routinely put trucks or vans on the lift, the geometry works against you. Symmetric handles heavy, long vehicles better and is the safer default for a mixed fleet. A lot of the automotive two post lifts we sell now are versymmetric — a hybrid arm design that gives you asymmetric-style door clearance with the option to load symmetrically when the vehicle calls for it. For a shop doing oil pan gaskets on classic V8s, we usually push asymmetric or versymmetric, because the whole point is being able to get under the front of the car with the doors usable and a work light hanging from the fender. Whatever you pick, verify the arm reach against your actual vehicles. Three-stage front arms matter more on long-wheelbase cars than most buyers realize, and a lift with short front arms will fight you on every early-’70s full-size you roll in.

Overhead or Baseplate: Let the Building Decide

The third branch is structural, and unlike the first two it’s not really a preference. Measure your clear ceiling height — the lowest point, including truss webs, light fixtures, and door tracks when the door is open. Overhead-style two-post models run the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a top crossbar, which needs roughly 12 to 14 feet of clear height depending on model and how tall your tallest vehicle is. Baseplate models route everything through a floor channel and can live under a 10 or 11-foot ceiling comfortably.

We ran into this exact wall with a buyer up near Grand Forks who came to us with a hard ceiling around 139 inches and a fixed budget. Overhead was simply off the table; baseplate was the only path, and the conversation went a lot faster once we established that. On the Iowa-Nebraska border side, most of the pole buildings we work in were built with 12 or 14-foot sidewalls, which usually clears an overhead — but the door header is often the real limiter, not the ceiling. Bring us a photo and a tape measure reading and we’ll tell you in five minutes. The other consideration for a restoration shop specifically: baseplate units put a raised plate across the bay, and if you’re rolling engine stands, transmission jacks, and body carts through constantly, that hump gets old. The Slab Question, Answered Before You Order

Concrete is where the decision tree can dead-end, and it’s the item we wish everyone checked first. Anchoring automotive two post lifts requires a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no reinforcement wire or utilities where the anchors go. Most manufacturers spec more than four inches for capacities above 12,000 lb. And it’s not enough for the slab to be thick — it needs to be sound, without cracks radiating through the anchor zone.

We hear “it’s about five inches, maybe less” more often than any other answer, and “maybe less” is the operative phrase. The only way to know is to core it or drill a test hole in the intended anchor location and measure. We’ve done that in shops from Council Bluffs to Ames and found everything from a beautiful six-inch pour on compacted base to a four-inch skin over loose fill. If the slab doesn’t make spec, the fix is cutting out a section and pouring footings — typically a four-by-four-foot pad at each column, eight to twelve inches deep. That’s a real cost and a real week of downtime, but it’s cheaper than an anchor pulling out with a car in the air. Do it before the truck shows up, not after. And if you’re building a new shop, tell your concrete contractor where the lift is going and pour thickened pads there from the start. It costs almost nothing at pour time and saves a saw and a jackhammer later.

Freight: What Actually Shows Up at Your Door

Here’s the part the online listings gloss over. A two-post lift ships as two columns strapped to a pallet or bundled, plus a crate or bundle of arms, hardware, and the power unit. Total weight for a 10,000 lb unit is generally in the 1,600 to 2,400 pound range. It moves as LTL freight on a 48 or 53-foot trailer, and unless you pay for it, that trailer does not have a liftgate — and even a liftgate is often rated below the weight of a bundled column.

Which means the driver’s job ends at the back of the trailer. You are responsible for getting it off. In a commercial setting with a dock, that’s nothing. In a rural shop on the Iowa-Nebraska border with a gravel drive, that’s a whole plan. We’ve had customers unload with a skid steer with pallet forks, a tractor with a loader, a rented telehandler, and in one memorable case four guys, a come-along, and a lot of optimism. Also consider whether a 53-foot trailer can physically get to you — plenty of the county roads and farmyard approaches we deliver to can’t turn one around. Ask for a straight-truck delivery if that’s your situation, and expect it to add to the freight cost. Outside that radius, plan it out before the pickup call comes.

Forklift and Unloading Logistics, Step by Step

If you’re handling the unload yourself, a few specifics. A forklift or skid steer needs a rated capacity comfortably above the heaviest single piece, and forks long enough to get under the full width of the bundle — short forks on a nine-foot column is how a column ends up in the ditch. Set the forks wide, approach slow, and lift only high enough to clear the trailer deck. Columns are top-heavy and want to roll off forks if you tilt.

Gravel and mud are the other variable. A skid steer with a heavy column raised on forks on soft ground is genuinely unstable, and around here that’s most of March and most of any week in April. If the approach is soft, lay down plywood or plan the delivery for a dry stretch. Inspect before you sign — check for bent column tops, damaged carriage rollers, kinked hydraulic hose, and missing hardware boxes, and note anything on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves. Once you sign clean, a freight damage claim becomes very difficult. We also tell people to open the hardware bag the day it lands rather than the day of install; missing anchor bolts or a wrong-length hose is a lot easier to solve with a week of lead time. The buyers who have the smoothest experience with automotive two post lifts are the ones who treated the delivery as its own project with its own checklist. Tying the Decision Tree Together for a Restoration Shop

Put it all in order and it’s a short list. Heaviest vehicle plus a cushion sets capacity — usually 10,000 lb for a restoration or general repair shop. Clear ceiling height picks overhead or baseplate. Vehicle mix and how often you’re in and out of the doors picks symmetric, asymmetric, or versymmetric arms. Slab thickness and condition determines whether you’re installing next month or pouring footings first. And your unloading equipment and road access shape how the freight gets scheduled. Answer those five and the actual model choice narrows to two or three options fast.

On budget, be realistic. A well-built 10,000 lb two-post from a brand with real Midwest parts support lands in the mid-four-figure range for the equipment alone, with install, anchors, and any electrical work on top. We regularly talk to buyers who’ve set a number based on the cheapest listing they found and haven’t accounted for freight, unloading, concrete work, or a 220V circuit run to the bay. Better to know the full picture up front.
