People assume the hydraulics are the risky part of a two post lift. They aren’t. A cylinder that’s weeping seal fluid announces itself with a puddle and a slow carriage, and you fix it for a few hundred dollars in parts. Check the arm restraint gears; ground-off teeth mean somebody drove off with an arm engaged. Finally, cycle the lift empty, all the way up and all the way down, twice, and watch both carriages. If one leads the other by more than a quarter inch at full height, the cables need adjustment at minimum and replacement more likely. You’re looking for broken strands, kinks, flat spots, rust bloom, and any change in how the cable seats in a sheave groove.

That said, wheel bearing work is also hard on a lift in ways people don’t anticipate. You’re applying lateral force with pullers and impacts, sometimes a lot of it, at pad height. A lift with sloppy arm pivots will move under that load, which is unnerving with a car overhead and rough on the arm restraints. This is where a Rotary SPO series or a Challenger CL10 earns its keep over a bargain import — the arm geometry and restraint hardware hold up under side loading. Installation, Anchoring, and the Annual Inspection Habit
Once the lift is yours, two things determine whether it stays safe: how it went into the floor and whether anybody looks at it after that. Anchoring is not a place to improvise. We core-test slab thickness when there’s any doubt, and in older Ankeny garages we’ve found four inches of concrete where the owner swore there was six.
