Late last year we installed a pair of automotive two post lifts in a small overland and off-road build shop on the west side of the Des Moines metro, and about five months in the owner called with a hydraulic cylinder that was weeping at the rod seal. Nobody wants that call. But it turned into one of the cleanest warranty claims we’ve handled, and the way it played out is worth writing down — because the difference between a two-day fix and a three-week fix has almost nothing to do with the lift and almost everything to do with whether the paperwork, the serial number, and the parts channel are lined up before the failure happens. The Shop and Why the Spec Was Unusual

This shop does lifted trucks, bumpers, sliders, armor, long-travel suspension, and a steady stream of Iowa annual safety and state inspection work for a local fleet. That combination made the spec harder than a normal general-repair bay. The vehicles were tall to start with and taller once they were on the arms, so ceiling clearance drove everything. They also ran wide — 35s and 37s on aftermarket wheels with poke — which meant drive-through width between the columns mattered more than the raw capacity number did. And a lot of the work was underbody: skid plates, fuel tank swaps, exhaust routing, and diff service.

We landed on 12,000 lb clearfloor columns with three-stage front arms and a taller-than-standard column option so a mildly lifted three-quarter-ton could still get to a useful working height without the crossbeam becoming a problem. We also spec’d truck adapters and taller stackable pads from the start, because trying to reach the frame rails on a lifted rig with standard round pads is how people bend arm pins. That planning matters to warranty too: manufacturers will absolutely deny a claim on a bent arm if you were lifting outside the specified points or over capacity, and with automotive two post lifts serving off-road builds, that’s the most common way a shop invalidates its own coverage.

What the Warranty Actually Covered

Warranty language on two-post equipment usually breaks into tiers, and the marketing headline number is almost never the whole picture. On the units we installed, the structural components — columns, carriages, arms, the welded steel — carried the longest coverage. The hydraulic and mechanical components, meaning the cylinder, the power unit, the motor, hoses, sheaves, and the safety latch mechanism, carried a shorter term. Wear items — arm pads, cable adjustment, and anything considered maintenance — carried essentially nothing beyond a short initial window, and that’s standard across the industry, not a knock on any brand.

The rod seal on the cylinder fell into the mechanical tier and was comfortably inside the term. Just as important, labor coverage is a separate question from parts coverage. Some manufacturers cover parts and labor for the first year and parts only after that; some cover parts for the full mechanical term with labor at the dealer’s rate. This is the single most useful thing to read on your paperwork before you need it, because a covered part with uncovered labor still means a service call on your invoice. How We Diagnosed the Cylinder Leak

Everything checked out, which is exactly why the claim went smoothly. When we see a shop that has clearly been running low on fluid for months or has cables so far out of adjustment that one carriage leads the other by an inch, the conversation with the manufacturer gets a lot harder. The Claim Workflow, Step by Step

Here’s the sequence, because people ask. Step one: serial number and model number off the column data plate, photographed, not transcribed — transcription errors are the number one cause of delay. Step two: proof of purchase and install date, which we already had on file since we sold and installed the units. Step three: photos and a written description of the failure, including the settle rate under load and a shot of the wet rod. Step four: submit to the manufacturer’s technical service group with our dealer credentials attached. Step five: they either approve the part, request more diagnostic detail, or ask for the failed component back for analysis.

In this case we got an approval inside two business days and a replacement cylinder shipped on the manufacturer’s dime. We had a loaner-style workaround in the meantime — the shop kept using the second lift and shuffled scheduling — and we swapped the cylinder in a single afternoon once the freight landed. Total downtime for that bay was about four working days. Compare that to the calls we get on orphaned import equipment where there is no dealer, no serial registry, and no technical service line, and the only path forward is measuring the old cylinder and having something fabricated. That’s a three-week outcome, and no warranty language in the world speeds it up.

Why Buying From an Installing Dealer Changes the Claim

The reason this claim moved in two days is unglamorous: one company sold the equipment, installed it, documented the anchor torque and cable adjustment at commissioning, and filed the claim. There was no argument about whether the lift was installed to spec, because our own install sheet was in the file. There was no dispute about the purchase date. There was no third party pointing at us and us pointing back. When a shop buys online from a marketplace and hires whoever is available to bolt it down, every one of those handoffs becomes a place the claim can stall.

We are not going to pretend this is the only reason to buy locally, but it is the one shop owners underestimate most. The second reason is parts on the shelf. Inspection Work, Duty Cycle, and Coverage Reality

The inspection side of this shop’s business changed how we think about the install. A lift doing annual state and safety inspections cycles far more times per day than a lift doing suspension builds — cars up, quick look, cars down, over and over. Cycle count is what wears cylinders, cables, and latch mechanisms, not the weight of any single vehicle. Two shops can buy identical automotive two post lifts on the same day and one will need cables at year eight while the other is fine at year fourteen, purely because of duty cycle. Warranty terms are written in years, not cycles, so a high-cycle shop effectively gets less coverage per hour of use.

Our advice for high-cycle bays is straightforward. Put a real preventive maintenance interval on the calendar rather than waiting for a symptom. Check fluid, grease the carriage slide blocks, inspect the cable ends at the sheaves and the anchor points, verify both latches engage on the same notch, and confirm anchor torque annually. Have the unit ALI-certified inspected once a year and keep the certificate. That documentation does double duty: it satisfies insurers and it makes any future warranty claim nearly frictionless.
