Automotive two post lifts fail for boring reasons, and the most common one we see is a cable nobody looked at. We got a call from a European-marque specialty shop in the Quad Cities that runs three bays of German and Swedish cars — oil services, DSG fluid, brake fluid flushes, all day long, sometimes twenty vehicles through the shop in a shift. One of their lifts had started resting on one lock ladder before the other. The owner assumed the lock mechanism was bad. It was not. Both equalizer cables had stretched unevenly and one had four broken strands hiding at the sheave. Here is every cable myth we had to debunk for that shop, and what we told them to do instead.

Myth 1: “The Cables Hold the Car Up”

This is the myth that causes the most confusion, and correcting it changes how a shop thinks about inspection. On a standard hydraulic two-post, the cylinder or cylinders lift the load. The cables do not carry the vehicle’s weight — they are equalizer cables, and their job is to keep the two carriages traveling at the same height. On a single-cylinder design, the cable system transfers motion from the powered side to the slave side. On a dual-cylinder design, the cables keep the two sides synchronized so the car stays level.

Why does that distinction matter? Because shops hear “they don’t hold the weight” and conclude cables are low-priority. The opposite is true. When an equalizer cable stretches, snaps, or jumps a sheave, one carriage keeps going and the other stops. The vehicle tilts, the arms load unevenly, and on some designs the lock ladders on the lagging side never engage properly. We have seen a car slide off pads because of a two-inch height differential between columns. On the Quad Cities shop’s unit, that uneven lock engagement was the early warning. If they had waited another month, the story would have involved a customer’s wagon on its side. Cable condition is a safety item on every one of the automotive two post lifts we service, full stop.

Myth 2: “If It Isn’t Frayed, It’s Fine”

Visible fraying is a late-stage symptom. Wire rope fails from the inside and at the points of maximum flex, which means the damage is almost always hidden where the cable wraps a sheave at the top of the column or at the base. A cable can look perfect along the visible run and have a dozen broken wires eight inches up inside the column head. That is exactly what we found on the Quad Cities lift — clean cable everywhere you could see it, and a cluster of broken strands right at the sheave contact area.

Proper inspection means running a gloved rag along the entire cable length so broken wires snag the cloth, and it means getting a light and a mirror up into the sheave pockets. You are also looking for things besides broken wires: kinks, corrosion and rust bleeding out of the strand cores, flattened sections where the cable rode against a hard edge, birdcaging where the outer strands have loosened, and any elongation of the threaded adjuster ends. The industry rule of thumb most manufacturers publish is replacement when you find broken wires in one lay, visible core, or measurable diameter reduction. On automotive two post lifts running heavy daily cycles like a busy European shop, we would rather replace a questionable cable than argue about how many strands is too many. Cables are one of the cheapest parts on the machine.

Myth 3: “There’s a Fixed Replacement Interval”

Shop owners always want a number — three years, five years, ten thousand cycles. There is no universal number, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. Cable life depends on cycle count, load, sheave diameter and condition, environment, and lubrication. A hobby lift in a heated garage that goes up twice a month can run fifteen years on original cables. A three-bay express service shop cycling a lift twenty-five times a day in a building with a leaky roof might need cables at four years.

What you can standardize is the inspection schedule, and that is where we push shops. Daily: a quick look and a listen while the lift comes up, watching for uneven travel or a clack that arrives out of sync. Monthly: hands-on inspection with a rag, cable tension check, and lubrication with a proper wire-rope lubricant that penetrates to the core rather than a spray that just coats the outside. Annually: a documented inspection by a qualified inspector, which ANSI/ALI guidance recommends for commercial lifts regardless of brand. It costs them ten minutes per lift per month and it caught a second stretched cable on a different unit three months later. Myth 4: “Just Adjust the Cables Tighter”

When a lift starts sitting unevenly, the instinct is to grab a wrench and crank the threaded cable adjuster until the carriages match again. Sometimes that is legitimate maintenance — cables do seat and stretch slightly during break-in, and manufacturers expect an adjustment in the first few months. But adjustment is not a repair. If you have adjusted the same cable twice in a year, that cable is telling you it is elongating, and elongation means the strands are failing.

There is a second problem with over-tightening: on many designs, cable tension interacts with lock ladder timing. Crank one side too tight and the locks on that column engage before the other, which puts the load into a single column and can bend a lock dog. We have replaced lock assemblies that were destroyed purely by aggressive cable adjustment. The right process is to level the carriages to spec, verify both locks engage simultaneously through the full travel, and then check tension against the manufacturer’s figure rather than by feel. And when you replace, replace in pairs. Putting one new cable next to one five-year-old cable guarantees you will be back under the lift in six months chasing the same uneven travel. That rule applies across essentially all automotive two post lifts, whether it is a Rotary SPO12, a Challenger CL10, or a twenty-year-old baseplate unit nobody makes parts for anymore.

Why High-Cycle Fluid Service Is Harder on Equipment Than It Looks

A European specialty shop doing oil changes and fluid service all day looks like light duty on paper. The cars are 3,500 to 5,000 lb, well under a 10,000 lb rating, and nobody is pulling transmissions. But cycle count is what wears a lift, not peak load. Twenty-five up-and-down cycles a day is over six thousand cycles a year per lift, and every one of those cycles flexes the cable over a sheave, drags the carriage slide blocks up the column, and strokes the cylinder rod through its seal.

That is why the shops we see with the worst cable wear are almost never the heavy-truck operations — they are the quick-service and specialty bays. The Quad Cities shop was surprised by that. They had assumed their lifts were coasting because the cars were small. We showed them the slide blocks, which were worn thin enough to let the carriage rock slightly in the column, and that rocking was misaligning the cable at the sheave and accelerating the strand breakage. Fixing the cable without fixing the slide blocks would have just started the clock over. Cycle-heavy shops should budget for cables, slide blocks, and lock hardware as consumables on a rolling schedule, the same way they budget for shop air fittings and drain pans. Sourcing the Right Cable for Your Model

Here is where a lot of shops waste a week. Cable assemblies are not generic. Length matters to the fraction of an inch, the fitting on each end has to match your anchor points, and the cable diameter has to match your sheave groove. Ordering by eyeball off a photo gets you a cable that is close but not right, and “close” on a lift cable means improper tension range and premature failure. Even within one manufacturer, the same model number can have three different cable sets depending on production year and column height.

What we need from you is the model number and the serial number off the data plate, plus column height if the plate is unreadable — and on older equipment, plates are unreadable more often than not. If the plate is gone, we measure: cable length end to end, cable diameter, fitting type and thread pitch, and the number of sheaves in the path. What the Quad Cities Shop Does Differently Now

They replaced cables in pairs on the affected unit, swapped the worn slide blocks, re-leveled the carriages, and verified simultaneous lock engagement through the full travel. Total downtime was part of one day. Then they changed their habits, which is the part that actually protects them. Every lift got a laminated monthly inspection card on the column. Every tech was told that uneven travel means the lift comes out of service immediately, not at the end of the day. And they scheduled an annual third-party inspection for all three units instead of waiting for something to feel wrong.

The broader lesson applies to any shop running automotive two post lifts on a high-cycle service schedule: the equipment does not warn you loudly. It warns you with a slightly out-of-sync clack, a half-inch tilt, a cable that needed adjusting again. Those are the signals.
