The First Site Visit: Measuring What Actually Matters

The shop owner told us over the phone he had “about twelve feet” of ceiling. When we got there with a laser, the truss bottom chord measured 11 feet 9 inches at the low point, and the sprinkler heads dropped another six inches below that in two spots. Then there was the rollup door assembly — the barrel and the curtain stack sat 22 inches below the header when open. Effective clearance in the front third of that bay was closer to nine and a half feet, and that is the number that matters when a lift arm reaches full rise with a truck on it.

We always measure four things on a first visit: the lowest structural point, the lowest utility point (lights, sprinklers, unit heaters, air lines), the door clearance when fully open, and the distance from the door to the proposed lift centerline. RV and trailer shops complicate all of it because their doors are taller, their vehicles are longer, and their tow vehicles are often duallies that need more room than a car. The owner in Marion had assumed a clear-floor two-post was automatic. It was not. On a car lift automotive project like this, the site tells you the answer — the catalog does not. We walked the bay with him and marked the floor in chalk so he could see the footprint before spending a dollar.

Overhead Two-Post Versus Clear-Floor Versus Four-Post

Three real options were on the table. An overhead two-post has a top beam tying the columns together, which means the beam has to clear the tallest vehicle you lift — usually adding a foot or more to your required ceiling height. A clear-floor two-post moves the equalization cables into the floor plate or a shallow trench, so nothing crosses overhead, but the columns themselves are still 11 to 12 feet tall on most models. A four-post keeps everything low, has no overhead structure, and works beautifully for long-wheelbase vehicles and trailers, but it costs you drive-on convenience for wheel-free work unless you add a rolling jack.

For this shop, the deciding factor was the door. Even a short-column clear-floor two-post would have sat under the sprinkler drop, and the low-ceiling variants would have capped rise at a height that made under-chassis work uncomfortable for a six-foot-two technician. We landed on a 14,000 lb four-post with a pair of rolling jacks. It gave them full-length support for long duallies and box trailers, no overhead obstruction, and enough rise to get a person standing upright under an exhaust system. Door Swing, Curtain Stack, and Approach Angle

People fixate on ceiling height and forget the door. A rollup curtain stacks into the top of the opening and steals headroom right where a vehicle enters. A sectional overhead door on standard-lift track runs horizontally along the ceiling and can conflict with a column or a top beam even when the peak height looks fine. High-lift and vertical-lift track solve that but cost money and need clear wall above the opening. Swing-out doors on older buildings have their own problem: the door leaf occupies floor space that the lift approach needs.

In Marion, we converted the front door to high-lift track before the lift ever showed up. It recovered nearly eighteen inches of usable clearance in the approach zone and let a tall dually pull straight in without the driver ducking. It also meant the four-post runways could sit closer to the door than originally planned, which freed up bench space at the back of the bay. Total cost of the door work was a fraction of the lift, and it improved every other job in that bay too. Exhaust and Driveline Access on Long Vehicles

The reason this shop wanted a lift in the first place was exhaust and driveline work. Class C motorhome chassis, tow rigs, and long-wheelbase trailers all need a technician moving from front to back underneath with tools and sometimes a full exhaust section in hand. Working off jack stands on a creeper is slow, uncomfortable, and genuinely unsafe when you are wrestling a twenty-pound muffler assembly overhead. A lift changes the economics of that work completely — a job that took three hours on the floor became about ninety minutes at chest height.

Four-post runways do partially obstruct the outer edges of the undercarriage, and that is a real tradeoff. For center-line work — driveshafts, carrier bearings, transfer cases, exhaust runs, fuel lines — the runways are not in your way at all. For anything at the rocker or outer frame rail, you feel them. The rolling jacks help by lifting the axle and freeing the wheels, but the runways stay put. This shop decided the tradeoff was worth it because ninety percent of their under-vehicle work sits between the frame rails. That is exactly the kind of honest assessment we want a customer to make before buying rather than after. Install Week: Anchors, Level, and Startup

Install on a four-post is different from a two-post. There are fewer anchors and less concrete drama, but leveling is everything. Runways that are out of level make a rolling jack want to creep, and a vehicle that wants to roll on a runway is a problem you notice immediately. We shim at each column base until the runways read dead level front to back and side to side, then verify with a vehicle on board because shop floors flex more than people expect.

The rest of install week was routine: set the columns, run the cables over the sheaves, install the safety ladders and lock mechanism, plumb the power unit, wire in 220-volt single phase, and cycle it empty a dozen times to purge air from the cylinder. Then we loaded it with a heavy tow truck and cycled again, checking lock engagement at every position on all four columns. A car lift automotive install is not done when the lift goes up — it is done when the locks drop in unison, the runways stay level under real load, and the operator can demonstrate the whole sequence back to us without prompting. We spent the last two hours of that job doing operator training with all three of their technicians, which is standard on everything we install. Month Seven: The Call We Expected

About seven months in, the shop called with the classic four-post complaint: one corner was hanging low by roughly three-quarters of an inch and the locks were not dropping evenly. This is not a defect. Equalization cables stretch during the break-in period on virtually every four-post ever built, and the first adjustment is a normal part of ownership. We came out, re-tensioned all four cables to spec, re-verified level with a vehicle on board, and re-checked the lock ladders.

While we were there we also found a rolling jack that was drifting down slowly under load — a tired seal in the jack cylinder, about a thirty-dollar part and twenty minutes of labor. That is the value of catching things at a scheduled visit instead of discovering them mid-job on a Friday afternoon. We set the shop up on an annual inspection with a mid-year cable check, which for a busy RV and trailer operation is the right cadence. Total downtime for the whole visit was under two hours.
