Every February we get calls from farm shop owners around Marion who suddenly realize their annual state inspection season is three weeks out and the lift in the corner of the machine shed is weeping fluid down the column. That is the worst possible time to start shopping, because a rushed purchase means whatever is on a truck this week instead of what actually fits the building. A car lift automotive purchase deserves the same scrutiny you would give a used tractor: pull the covers, look at the cylinder, check the seals, and ask what the rebuild kit costs before you sign anything. Start With the Cylinder, Not the Sticker Price

Most buyers start with capacity and price. We start with the cylinder, because that single component determines whether the machine you are looking at is a ten-year asset or a three-month headache. On a two-post, the cylinder is doing all the work: lifting the carriage, holding pressure while a technician works underneath, and cycling several dozen times a day during inspection season. Seals wear. Rod chrome pits, especially in an unheated shed where condensation forms every night between October and April. A pitted rod will chew through a new seal kit in weeks, which is why we always ask people to run a fingernail down the exposed rod before they buy anything used.

When you evaluate a used unit, cycle it to full height and hold it. Watch for creep. A carriage that settles more than a quarter inch over ten minutes is telling you the piston seal is bypassing, the check valve is dirty, or both. Then look at the base of the column for the tell-tale wet stripe of hydraulic fluid running down toward the floor. On a new car lift automotive install we still inspect the cylinder before it goes vertical, because shipping damage happens and a bent rod is far easier to catch on sawhorses than after the columns are anchored and plumbed.

Seal Kits, Packing, and What Actually Fails

The parts that fail on hydraulic lifts are almost never the expensive ones. A cylinder body is a heavy steel tube that will outlive most shops. What fails is the rod seal, the wiper, the O-rings on the gland nut, and occasionally the piston seal. Those pieces cost a fraction of a replacement cylinder, and on most Rotary and Challenger units we can source a complete rebuild kit and have it on a Marion doorstep inside a few days. The labor is straightforward for anyone comfortable with hydraulics: bleed the system, unbolt the gland, pull the rod, clean everything, install new seals in the right orientation, reassemble, cycle, and bleed again.

Where it goes wrong is contamination. Nine out of ten repeat seal failures we investigate trace back to dirty fluid. Farm shops are dusty by nature, and if the reservoir breather cap has been sitting cracked for two seasons, that dust is now abrasive grit circulating past every seal in the system. Before you rebuild anything, drain the reservoir, wipe it out, replace the suction filter if the power unit has one, and refill with clean AW-32 or AW-46 depending on how cold the building gets. We tell customers that a rebuild without a fluid change is half a repair. Do both, and the seals last years instead of months.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Farm Shop Reality

Marion-area shops we visit range from brand-new post-frame buildings with engineered slabs to 1960s pole barns where the concrete was poured by whoever had a mixer that weekend. Both can work, but you need to know which one you have. Manufacturer specs for a typical 10,000 lb two-post call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and honestly we prefer to see five or six. Core drilling a test hole in the intended bay costs almost nothing and answers the question definitively. We have cored slabs that turned out to be three inches over gravel, and in those cases the only honest answer is a poured footing pad before anything gets anchored.

Cracks matter too. Anchors need clean, sound concrete for the full embedment depth and a reasonable distance to the nearest edge or expansion joint. If your best bay has a control joint running right where the driver-side column wants to sit, either shift the layout or plan on cutting and repouring a section. A four-post is more forgiving because it distributes load across a larger footprint and does not depend on anchors to resist overturning, which is one reason a lot of the farm shops we work with end up choosing four-post equipment for a mixed fleet of pickups and service vehicles.

Matching Capacity to a Mixed Farm Fleet

The 7,000 lb lifts we still service in older Iowa shops were sized for a different era of vehicle. A three-quarter-ton crew cab diesel with a flatbed and a full fuel transfer tank can flirt with 9,000 lb before you add a service body. If you inspect anything heavier than half-ton pickups, 10,000 lb is the practical floor and 12,000 to 15,000 lb makes more sense for a shop that also handles grain trucks or larger service rigs. Capacity is cheap on the front end and impossible to add later, and we would rather sell you one lift that covers the whole fleet than have you buy twice.

Just as important is the arm geometry and the lifting points. Long, low front-wheel-drive cars need three-stage arms that reach inboard pinch welds. Tall trucks need adapters that stack without putting the arm at an awkward angle. When customers ask us to spec a car lift automotive package for a farm shop doing annual inspections, we ask what percentage of the work is cars versus trucks, then match the arm configuration to that mix. An asymmetric two-post with swing arms handles cars beautifully and trucks acceptably. A symmetric configuration handles trucks beautifully and cars acceptably. There is no configuration that is best at both, so choose based on where your revenue actually comes from.

Your Pre-Purchase Car Lift Automotive Inspection Checklist

Here is what we run through, in order, on any used unit before we recommend it. First, the data tag: manufacturer, model, capacity, serial number, and year. No tag means no parts support and no ANSI/ALI documentation, and we walk away from those more often than not. Second, the columns: check for bowing, cracked welds at the base plate, and elongated anchor holes that indicate the unit has moved under load. Third, the carriages: pull the slide blocks and look at wear. Fourth, cables and chains on equalization systems, checking for broken strands, kinks, and corrosion at the sheaves.

Fifth, the hydraulics: cylinder rod condition, visible leaks, hose age and routing, and the power unit itself. Sixth, safety systems: every lock must engage audibly at every notch, and the manual release must return them cleanly. Seventh, the electrical: motor condition, contactor, and whether the shop has the right voltage and phase available. If a used car lift automotive package clears all seven and the seller has the original installation manual, it is worth pursuing. If it fails on locks or concrete, we will tell you to pass, even if the price looks like a bargain. Two of the three worst lifts we have ever been called to inspect were free.

What a Rebuild Costs Versus Replacing the Lift

The honest math surprises people. A complete cylinder rebuild kit plus fresh fluid and a filter falls into the low-hundreds range for most common two-post models. Cables, slide blocks, and lock springs add a few hundred more. So a mechanically sound older Rotary or Challenger that needs a full hydraulic refresh often comes back to reliable service for well under a quarter of the cost of new equipment, and those older units were built heavy. We have brought units from the 1990s back into daily inspection duty in central Iowa shops and they are still running.

The line we draw is structural. Bent columns, cracked base welds, worn carriage bearing surfaces, or an obsolete model with no parts availability push a repair into bad-money territory fast. That is also true if the concrete underneath needs work anyway, since you are already opening the floor. In those cases we quote both paths side by side and let the owner decide with real numbers instead of guesses. Getting Ready for Inspection Season in Marion

The shops that sail through their busiest weeks are the ones that did their maintenance in the slow month before. That means a full function test at the start of the season: cycle the equipment through its complete range unloaded, listen to every lock engage, verify the lowering speed is controlled and not abrupt, check fluid level with the carriage all the way down, torque-check the anchors, and grease what the manual says to grease. Write the date on a card and hang it on the column. It takes an hour and it is the cheapest insurance in the building.
