A quick-lube franchise operator in Sioux City called us last spring with a problem that sounds simple and never is: he wanted to add oil pan gasket work and light repair to two bays that had been built for drain-and-fill only, and he needed a car lift automotive setup that wouldn’t strand a vehicle overhead when the bay is already booked eleven cars deep by ten in the morning. He had a number in his head from a website. That number covered the lift and nothing else. We spent an afternoon walking his floor with a tape measure and a hammer, and by the end we had a real budget: equipment, freight, concrete verification, install, air drops, and the layout changes that make a lift bay actually flow. This is that breakdown, generalized, so you can build your own before you sign anything.

Line One: The Lift Itself, and Why Capacity Is the Cheapest Upgrade

The equipment line is the one everybody shops, and it’s the one where people save two hundred dollars and regret it for fifteen years. A entry-tier asymmetric 10,000 lb two-post lands in the low four figures. A Rotary SPO10 or SPOA10 sits meaningfully above that. A Challenger CL10V3 falls between. Step up to 12,000 lb and you’re adding roughly fifteen to twenty percent, not double. For a quick-lube adding oil pan gasket and light repair work, that step up is the single best money in the whole budget, because the vehicles rolling through a Sioux City lube bay in 2025 include three-quarter-ton diesels and long-wheelbase SUVs that eat a 10,000 lb rating’s usable margin fast.

The other equipment decision is clearfloor versus overhead. Clearfloor two-post models run a few hundred more and require deeper concrete at the base plates, but they let a technician stand a hood up without hitting a crossbar and they let you roll a drain cart straight through. In a lube-derived bay where the floor drain and the used-oil plumbing already dictate where things sit, that clean floor path matters more than the price difference. We’ve had operators tell us the overhead bar cost them more in dented hoods over five years than the clearfloor upgrade would have cost once. Budget the equipment line honestly, then stop optimizing it and move to the lines that actually blow budgets.

Line Two: Freight, Liftgate, and the Delivery Nobody Plans For

A two-post lift ships as roughly 1,600 to 2,000 pounds of steel on a pallet with columns crated separately. Freight from a Midwest distribution point to western Iowa is a few hundred dollars, and that’s the number most people budget. What they don’t budget is the accessorial charges: liftgate service, residential or limited-access delivery, inside delivery, and detention if nobody’s there with a forklift when the truck shows up. Those add up quickly and they show up on an invoice after the fact, which is how a clean quote turns into an argument.

Our advice to the Sioux City operator was the same one we give everybody: have a forklift or a telehandler on site the morning of delivery, get a four-hour appointment window in writing, and refuse liftgate if you can handle the pallet yourself. That one decision saved him more than the cost of his air drops. If you’re buying from us and we’re installing, we coordinate the freight and the install date so the crate doesn’t sit in your parking lot for nine days collecting snow. If you’re self-installing, put a person on the delivery whose only job that morning is the delivery. A car lift automotive install that starts with a damaged column because the driver dropped it off the gate at 7 a.m. with nobody watching is a six-week delay you cannot bill for.

Line Three: Concrete Verification and What Sioux City Slabs Actually Look Like

Every two-post manufacturer publishes a minimum: typically 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb lift, and often 4.25 to 6 inches for higher capacities, with minimum cure age and minimum distance to a slab edge or expansion joint. Quick-lube buildings are the single worst offenders we encounter, because a lot of them were built with a pit or a trench that got filled and capped, and the cap is not structural. We core-test or at minimum hammer-and-drill test before we quote an install on any converted lube building.

If the slab fails, you cut and pour footings. For a two-post that’s two pads, typically 4 by 4 feet by 12 inches deep with rebar, cured a minimum of 28 days before you anchor. The cost lands in the high hundreds to low thousands per lift depending on whether you’re cutting through vapor barrier and whether there’s plumbing in the way — and in a former lube bay there is almost always plumbing in the way. This is the line item that turns a tidy car lift automotive budget into an unpleasant conversation, and it’s why we insist on seeing the floor before we quote. The operator in Sioux City had 5 inches of good pour in one bay and a filled trench in the other. One bay installed in a day; the other needed footings and a three-week wait. Knowing that in February instead of April is worth the inspection fee ten times over.

Line Four: Installation Labor, Anchoring, and Certification

A straightforward two-post install on good concrete is a one-day, two-technician job: set columns, plumb and shim, drill and set anchors to torque spec, run the equalization cable or hydraulic line, wire the power unit, bleed the system, cycle it loaded, and set the mechanical locks. Budget in the mid hundreds to low four figures depending on distance and whether we’re doing one lift or three. Doing three at once is dramatically cheaper per unit than doing one, which is why we always ask about your five-year plan before we quote a single bay.

Anchoring is where DIY installs fail most often. Anchor bolts have a specified embedment depth, a specified hole diameter, and a torque value, and a hammer drill that wanders produces an oversized hole that will never hold that torque. We’ve been called out to re-anchor lifts where somebody used the wrong-diameter bit and then wondered why the column rocked under load. Shim stacks are the other one — a column that’s out of plumb by more than the manufacturer’s tolerance puts side load on the carriage rollers and chews them up in a year. When we install a car lift automotive package, we hand over the anchor torque log and the ALI-format inspection record, which your insurance carrier and your franchisor’s field auditor will both eventually ask for. Getting that paperwork retroactively for a self-install is a headache.

Line Five: Air, Power, and Fluid Routing in a Converted Lube Bay

Two-post lifts need a 220V single-phase circuit at 20 to 30 amps for most 10K and 12K power units, and they need shop air at 90 to 120 PSI for the pneumatic lock release. Quick-lube buildings usually have air, because impacts and grease guns need it, but the drops are placed for a drain-and-fill workflow — low, near the front of the bay, on the driver’s side. A lift bay needs air at the columns and, ideally, a retractable reel overhead in the center. Adding two drops and a reel runs a few hundred in materials plus an electrician’s or plumber’s time.

Power is the bigger surprise. A lot of older Iowa lube buildings are running a 100-amp panel that’s already carrying compressor, waste-oil heater, lights, and a bulk oil pump system. Adding two lift circuits sometimes means a subpanel or a service upgrade, and that’s a licensed-electrician quote that can rival the lift itself. Get an electrician in the building before you buy, not after. We also strongly recommend moving your bulk oil reels and your used-oil evacuation point to the side wall rather than centerline once a lift goes in, because a swing arm and a hanging hose reel will find each other eventually. In the Sioux City build we relocated three reels and a drain cart station, which cost a few hundred dollars and saved a wrecked reel every quarter.

Bay Layout and Workflow: Where the Real Money Is Made Back

Here’s the part nobody puts in a spreadsheet. A car lift automotive installation pays for itself through throughput, and throughput comes from layout. Minimum bay width for a two-post is 12 feet; 14 is comfortable; 15 lets a tech open a door fully with the vehicle centered. Column-to-column spacing on a standard asymmetric is around 11 feet 6 inches inside, and you need at least 24 feet of bay depth to get a crew-cab pickup in with room to walk around the front. Ceiling height is the hard constraint: 12 feet is the practical minimum for a two-post with a full-height truck, and many older lube buildings run 11 or less at the header.

Workflow matters as much as dimensions. Put the lift in the back bay if your building has a drive-through pattern, so lube-only cars flow past without waiting on an overhead vehicle. Keep the oil pan gasket job — the whole reason this operator wanted lifts — in a bay with a parts bench and a drain within arm’s reach, because that job is thirty minutes of scraping and any trip to the far wall doubles it. Mount the lift controls on the column nearest the walk path, not nearest the wall. Those choices cost nothing at install and are nearly impossible to change afterward. Putting the Whole Number Together, Plus Ongoing Cost

Add it up in tiers. Low tier — good existing slab, adequate power, one 10,000 lb lift, self-managed freight, professional install: you’re in the low four figures for equipment and a few thousand all-in. Middle tier — 12,000 lb clearfloor, one footing pour, two air drops, professional install with certification: roughly half again as much. Upper tier — two lifts, subpanel, footings in both bays, reel relocation, and a certified install with documentation: comfortably into five figures. The Sioux City project landed in the middle-upper band, and the operator recovered it in under a year on gasket and light-repair labor he previously turned away.

Then budget the ongoing side, because a car lift automotive asset is not a set-and-forget purchase. Annual ALI-standard inspection, hydraulic fluid change every two to three years, cable equalization checks on chain-driven models, arm restraint gear inspection, and eventual replacement of slider blocks and lock ladders. Figure a few hundred a year per lift for a shop running it hard, more if you’re in a high-cycle environment. That’s genuinely cheap insurance next to the alternative.
