Financing a Car Lift: A Waukee Collector’s First Year of Ownership

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

A collector in Waukee called us in the middle of January with a question we hear constantly: is a car lift automotive purchase something you finance, or something you save up for and pay cash? He had six vehicles in a heated pole building west of town, a rotating schedule of Iowa state inspections and safety checks to keep them road-legal, and a bad back that made crawling under a 1969 Camaro on jack stands a genuinely unpleasant afternoon. What follows is the honest version of his first year — the quote, the terms he actually signed, the deposit schedule, install day, the anchor bolts, and the phone call twelve months later when something finally needed attention. No brochure language, just what happened.

Why a Collector Buys Differently Than a Shop

Commercial shops buy on throughput. Every hour a bay sits empty is money gone, so the math is simple and the decision usually takes a week. A collector buys on a completely different set of variables, and that changes which equipment makes sense. Our Waukee customer was not billing hours. He was doing annual state inspections on six vehicles, occasional brake work, oil changes, and long winter projects that sat half-finished for weeks at a stretch. He also wanted to park two cars in the footprint of one, because his building was full and adding square footage in Dallas County is not cheap right now.

That combination pointed straight at a four-post. A two-post gives you better wheels-free access, and for pure service work it wins every time. But a two-post cannot hold a vehicle in the air unattended for three months while you wait on a part from a swap meet in Missouri. A four-post can, safely, sitting on its mechanical locks with drip trays underneath. We walked him through both options honestly, including the fact that a rolling jack bridge would add cost but restore most of the wheels-free capability he would give up. He bought the jack. A year later he told us it was the single best line item on the invoice.

What the Quote Actually Included

The first surprise for most buyers is that the sticker price on a lift is not the delivered, installed, working price. Our quote for his car lift automotive package broke into five distinct pieces, and we itemized every one of them so nothing showed up as a surprise on the final invoice. First, the lift itself — a 9,000 lb four-post with extended runways to handle a long-bed pickup he had not mentioned until our second phone call. Second, the rolling bridge jack. Third, freight from the manufacturer’s distribution point to Waukee, which for a crated four-post is not a small number.

Fourth, installation labor. That covers our crew’s travel, the unload, assembly, leveling, hydraulic fill and bleed, cycle testing, and the walkthrough. Fifth, accessories: drip trays, a caster kit so he could reposition the unit seasonally, and an aluminum approach ramp upgrade. We also flagged two things that were not in the quote — electrical hookup by a licensed electrician, and any concrete work if the slab came up short. His slab was a six-inch pour from 2016 with fiber reinforcement, which we verified by drilling a test hole. It passed. A lot of quotes fall apart at that step, and we would rather find out in February than on install day.

Financing Terms and the Payment Schedule

He financed. Most collectors we work with do, and there is nothing wrong with it — equipment financing on a car lift automotive purchase is generally straightforward because the lift itself is collateral with real resale value. He went through a third-party equipment lender rather than a home equity line, which we usually recommend for anyone who wants to keep the asset separate from the house. Terms in the current market for good credit typically run 36 to 60 months, with rates in the single digits to low teens depending on credit profile, time in business if it is a business purchase, and whether you put money down.

The payment schedule on our side is simpler than people expect. We take a deposit at order — typically a third — which secures the unit and covers the freight commitment. The balance comes due at installation, once the lift is assembled, cycled, and you have signed off on the walkthrough. If a lender is funding it, they usually wire the balance directly to us after install confirmation. Our Waukee customer’s deposit went in during the first week of February, the unit shipped from the manufacturer about three weeks later, and we set install for the second week of March. His first loan payment hit thirty days after funding. Total out-of-pocket before he ever lifted a car: the deposit plus the electrician’s bill.

Install Day in a Dallas County Pole Building

Install day for a four-post is a two-person, four-to-six-hour job in a clean building with good access. His building had good access — a 14-foot overhead door and a level gravel apron — so the unload went fast. The crated columns and runways come in heavy, and we bring the equipment to move them without dragging anything across a finished floor. Assembly order matters: columns first, then crossbeams, then runways, then cables, then the power unit and hydraulic lines.

The step that takes the longest and matters the most is leveling. A four-post is not anchored the same way a two-post is — it can sit free-standing on a level slab, which is exactly why the caster kit is worth buying. But “level” has to be real, not close enough. Shims under the column base plates get the runways parallel within tolerance, and if you skip that, the mechanical locks will not engage evenly and the lift will rack under load. We spent nearly an hour on shims in his building because the slab had a quarter-inch fall toward the overhead door for drainage. Then hydraulic fill, bleed the cylinder, cycle the unit six or seven times empty, load-test it with his own truck, and walk him through the lock release procedure, the emergency lowering process, and the monthly cable inspection. He recorded the walkthrough on his phone. Smart move — we encourage it.

The First Round of Annual Inspections

Iowa does not require an annual safety inspection on most passenger vehicles, but he was moving cars in and out of state and had a couple of titles that needed VIN verification and roadworthiness checks. On top of that, he treated the start of each spring as his own inspection cycle: fluids, brakes, tires, exhaust, suspension bushings, and a general underbody look on all six vehicles. Before the lift, that was six weekends on his back. After, it was two Saturdays.

Here is what actually changed. With the rolling jack, he could get wheels free on the four-post and pull brake rotors without repositioning the car. Drip trays under the upper vehicle meant he could keep a leaky old British roadster parked up top without ruining the finish on whatever sat below. And because he could get a full underbody view at eye level, he found two things he had genuinely never seen: a rusted-through fuel line clip on the Camaro and a torn CV boot on a daily driver. Neither would have been visible with the car on ramps. That is the part people underestimate about a car lift automotive investment — the value is not just labor savings, it is finding failures before they strand you on Highway 6.

Twelve Months In: The First Service Call

He called us in early March of year two. Not because something broke — because the lift was creeping. He would raise it, set the locks, and over a few days the runways would settle a quarter inch. That is a classic symptom, and it almost never means the cylinder is shot. It means the check valve or the lowering valve is not sealing, usually because a bit of debris found its way into the hydraulic circuit during the first year of operation.

We came out, cycled it, and confirmed the drift. The fix was a valve cleaning and a fluid change with a filter, which took about ninety minutes. While we were there we did the full annual: cable tension and equalization check, sheave inspection for grooving, lock ladder inspection, hydraulic line inspection for weeping fittings, and a torque check on every fastener. Cables stretch during the first year of service on any new lift — that is normal, not a defect — and equalizing them is standard first-year maintenance. If you own a lift and nobody has told you that, you have been given bad information. We also topped off fluid, because a small amount of consumption during break-in is expected. Total time on site: under two hours. He is now on our annual inspection calendar, which is where every owner should be. Read more in our guides on four-post lift maintenance and when to replace lift cables.

What We Would Tell the Next Waukee Buyer

Buy capacity you will not outgrow. The difference in price between a 9,000 lb unit and a 12,000 lb unit is real but not enormous, and the number of collectors who add a three-quarter-ton truck to the fleve within three years is high. Measure your ceiling before you shop, not after — a four-post with a vehicle on top needs the runway height plus the vehicle height plus clearance, and pole buildings in Dallas County vary wildly. Verify your slab. Six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is the practical baseline for most car lift automotive installations, and if you are not sure what you have, a core sample costs far less than a failed anchor.

On financing, get the term you can comfortably carry rather than the shortest one you technically qualify for. Equipment like this holds value; a well-maintained four-post from a name brand sells used without much trouble. And do not skip the rolling jack if there is any chance you will do brake or suspension work. Finally, budget for the electrician separately and get them scheduled before the lift arrives, not after. We have watched more than one install stall out because a 220V circuit was still a plan instead of a receptacle. If you are working through the numbers on a car lift automotive project anywhere in central Iowa, call us and we will build you a real, itemized quote — see our installation cost breakdown for the ranges we typically see.
