An RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa spent a year telling us they didn’t need a car lift automotive setup, because everything they touched was too long, too tall, or too heavy for a hoist. Why a four-post won the argument
The first conversation wasn’t about brands or price. It was about what rolls through their door. Their bread and butter is bumper-pull and gooseneck trailers, plus vintage travel trailer restorations that arrive on a chassis with soft floors and rotted crossmembers. A two-post would have given them better underside access for wheels-free work, but the arms won’t reach usable pick points on a trailer frame, and a lot of their projects have no rocker panel or pinch weld left to grab.
So we spec’d a four-post with extended runways and a rolling bridge jack. Runways carry a trailer frame or a unibody with a rusted-out floor without asking the structure to hold a point load. The rolling jack gets the wheels off the ground when they need to pull a hub or work the suspension. And critically, a four-post drives on — one person can load it, which matters in a two-man shop where nobody has time to spot a car onto arms. We also talked capacity honestly. They wanted 7,000 lb because that’s the number they’d seen on a used listing. Their heaviest regular job was a loaded dual-axle trailer well past that, so we moved them up a tier. Buying too little capacity is the most common mistake we see in a car lift automotive purchase, and it’s the one you can’t fix later without buying twice.
Laying out the bay before anything got bolted down
We spent most of a morning with a tape measure and blue chalk before a single anchor hole got drilled. Bay layout is where a hoist either makes a shop faster or makes it miserable, and once it’s anchored into concrete you live with your decisions. We measured ceiling height at the low point — not the peak, the low point, including a truss that hung four inches below everything else. We measured door swing, the overhead door track, the lighting positions, and the air and power drops.
Then we mapped clearances. On a four-post you need approach room at one end, walk-around room on both sides, and enough room at the back that a technician can stand behind a raised trailer with a grinder without backing into a workbench. We settled on offsetting the runways slightly toward the north wall so the wide side became the work aisle, with their welding cart and plasma table on that side. The narrow side got the parts shelving they only reach a few times a day. We also moved a compressor line so a hose reel landed directly over the bay instead of ten feet away. Install day: concrete, anchors, and one surprise
Install ran a day and a half, which is typical for a four-post with extended runways plus a rolling jack. We cored test holes first to verify slab thickness, and here’s the surprise: the section of floor they wanted to use had been patched years earlier, and the patch was thinner than the original pour with no visible rebar. We shifted the footprint about three feet, which is exactly why we test before we commit. Anchoring a hoist into a shallow patch is how you get a column that walks under load.
From there it was standard work. Set and square the columns, run the cables and check routing at every sheave, level the runways to each other and to the floor, torque anchors to spec, fill and bleed the hydraulics, then cycle the lift empty a dozen times and verify that all four locks engage simultaneously at every position. That last check is the one shops skip and the one that matters. We loaded it with a shop truck, took it to full height, dropped it onto the locks, and left it loaded overnight to watch for settle. Nothing moved. We walked their two technicians through daily and monthly checks, showed them where the cable inspection points are, and left the manual, the ALI safety materials, and the serial documentation in a binder on the wall. Months one through three: the workflow rewrite
The first month was mostly people learning new habits. Two things changed the way that shop works. First, restoration jobs stopped monopolizing floor space. A trailer frame that used to sit on stands in the middle of the shop for three weeks now sits up at working height with usable floor underneath it, so a second job can happen below. That alone was worth the equipment.
Second, overhead welding got dramatically better and dramatically more dangerous at the same time. But they learned fast that grinding sparks and welding spatter land on hydraulic hoses, and that a hot slag shower on a cable is a real problem. By month three the workflow settled: load, raise to lock, position lighting, tarp the hoses, then work. It sounds fussy written out, but it took a week to become automatic. The first service call, nine months in
The call came in November. One runway was sitting slightly low, and the locks weren’t dropping cleanly on the driver-side rear. Their assumption was a bad cylinder. The actual cause was cable stretch — completely normal on a new four-post in its first year as the cables seat and the strands take a set. Four cables sharing a load never stretch identically, so one corner drifts out of level and the lock ladder stops aligning.

Under two hours. We also caught a loose anchor bolt on one column that had backed off a quarter turn — worth catching, and only visible because we torque-check anchors on every service call. That visit is the argument for scheduled annual service instead of waiting for a failure. Small adjustments made on time keep the cables, sheaves, and locks from wearing each other out. What they’d do differently, in their own words
We asked at the one-year mark. Three answers. First: go longer on the runways. They bought the extended runway option and still occasionally wish they’d gone one size up, because gooseneck trailers are always longer than you estimated. Runway length is cheap at order time and impossible to add later.
Second: run more power and air to the bay than you think you need. They pulled one 220V drop and one air line; within six months they had a plasma cutter, a MIG welder, and an impact all competing for the same corner. Third: buy the lighting upgrade. Working under a raised trailer in a shop with 1990s fluorescent fixtures means every job needs a drop light and an extension cord. LED strips mounted on the runway undersides or the ceiling above the bay pay for themselves in a month of restoration work.
