An EV specialty shop owner in Ankeny called us last spring convinced that his brand-new car lift automotive setup was defective because the rotors on a Model Y kept coming out of the shop with uneven pad transfer. The lift wasn’t defective. The arms had been set to a symmetric pattern on a vehicle that needed asymmetric loading, and the front axle was hanging farther off the pads than he realized. That one conversation covered about six of the most common myths we hear from EV shops every year — myths about brands, about parts availability, about what a battery pack actually does to your load math. Myth #1: “EVs Are Just Heavier Cars, So Any Lift Works”

This is the mistake that costs shops the most. Yes, a Lightning or a Rivian is heavier than the sedan it replaced — but weight is only half the story. The pack sits low and centered, which pulls the center of gravity down and toward the middle of the wheelbase. That changes where your arms need to land and how much of the rated capacity you’re actually using at each pad. A 10,000 lb two-post can handle a 6,500 lb truck on paper and still be loaded badly if three of four arms are carrying most of it.

The Ankeny shop we mentioned had a good unit. What he didn’t have was documented lift point data for half the vehicles rolling through his door. We spent an hour building a laminated cheat sheet for his six most common models, marking arm extension and pad height for each. Brake service and rotor swaps mean the wheels come off, which means the vehicle sits on the lift for longer stretches under a technician’s hands. Getting the pads right matters more when someone is pulling on a caliper bracket with a breaker bar. Myth #2: “Brand Doesn’t Matter Anymore”

We hear this constantly, usually from someone who just read a spec sheet from an importer nobody’s heard of. Brand matters, but not for the reasons people assume. It isn’t about the steel — plenty of frames are competently welded. It’s about who’s going to answer the phone in year seven when a carriage slider block wears through or a locking latch spring snaps.

Rotary has been building lifts since the 1920s, and that history means something practical: parts numbers stay traceable, service literature exists for units built decades ago, and a distributor like us can source a component for a lift installed before the current owner bought the building. Challenger has a similar depth on the commercial side, and their four-post rolling jack assemblies are supported long past the point where a no-name brand’s importer has moved on to a different product line. On the home and light-duty side, BendPak and Atlas both have real parts pipelines behind them. The brands we don’t stock are usually the ones where the parts trail goes cold. When you’re picking a car lift automotive brand, you’re really picking a twenty-year parts relationship, and that’s the part shops underweight.

Myth #3: “Replacement Parts Are Universal”

They are absolutely not. We field calls every month from shops that bought a cable set online because the length matched and the sheave diameter looked close. Cables are spec’d to a specific carriage geometry, a specific sheave stack, and a specific breaking strength relative to the lift’s rated capacity. Swap in something that’s dimensionally similar but wrong on construction and you’ve built a failure into the equipment.

The same goes for hydraulic cylinders, locking latches, and the plastic slider blocks in a two-post carriage. Those blocks look like generic UHMW spacers. They’re machined to a tolerance that keeps the carriage from rocking in the column, and the wrong ones will chatter and wear the column liner. When someone sends us a photo of a part and a serial plate, we can usually pin the correct component in a few minutes — that’s what a real parts pipeline buys you. If you’re running a car lift automotive operation where downtime costs you three brake jobs a day, guessing on parts is the expensive option.

Myth #4: “EV Shops Need a Four-Post Because of the Battery”

Four-post lifts are excellent for what they do — alignment work, storage, long-term parking, and drive-on convenience. But a lot of EV shop owners talk themselves into one because they’ve heard the battery pack means you shouldn’t lift by the frame. That’s a misread. Every EV manufacturer publishes frame lift points precisely because two-post lifting is expected. The concern isn’t lifting the vehicle; it’s lifting it in the wrong place and putting pressure on pack structure or a subframe that isn’t rated for it.

For brake service and rotor swaps, a two-post is almost always the better tool. Wheels-free access, nothing under the car to work around, and the technician can walk a full circle without stepping over a runway. The Ankeny shop kept his two-post as the primary brake bay and added a four-post later for alignment and battery inspection work, which is the pattern we recommend to most EV specialists. Myth #5: “A Concrete Slab Is a Concrete Slab”

This one bites people hard, and it’s the most expensive myth to fix after the fact. Two-post lifts transfer enormous point loads into the floor through the anchor bolts. The manufacturer specifies minimum thickness and minimum compressive strength for a reason, and “the building is only fifteen years old” tells us nothing about what’s actually under the paint.

In central Iowa we run into a specific problem: a lot of light industrial and retail-conversion buildings around Ankeny, Des Moines, and the northern suburbs were poured for forklift traffic or general storage, not for anchored lift columns. Four inches of slab over questionable base material will pass a visual inspection and still fail a pullout test. We core-test when there’s any doubt, and when the slab comes up short the answer is a cut-and-pour footing pad at each column — inconvenient, but far cheaper than a column that walks under load. Before we quote installation on any car lift automotive project, we want to know slab thickness, rebar or mesh, and what’s underneath. Shops that skip this step end up paying for the concrete work twice, once to discover the problem and once to fix it.

Myth #6: “If It Lifts, It’s Fine”

A lift that raises and lowers is not the same as a lift that’s safe. The components that fail first are usually the ones you can’t see from the floor. Locking latches wear at the pawl tip and start skipping a tooth. Equalizer cables stretch and go out of sync, so one carriage leads the other by an inch. Hydraulic hoses weep at the crimp and the seepage hides behind a column cover.

ANSI/ALI guidance calls for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and every manufacturer we carry says the same in their manual. We do these inspections across Iowa and eastern Nebraska, and the failure list is remarkably consistent: cables out of adjustment, latches not engaging simultaneously, anchor bolts torqued below spec, arm restraint gears worn round. Most are cheap fixes caught early and serious problems caught late. Buy capacity you’ll still be comfortable with in five years, because the vehicles are getting heavier and nobody’s electric truck is losing weight. Get the arm configuration matched to your actual vehicle mix rather than a generic recommendation — that’s a fifteen-minute conversation that prevents years of awkward setups.

Then verify the floor before you order anything, and pick a brand whose parts you’ll still be able to buy when the lift is a teenager.
