Adding a car lift to a shop that mostly works on RVs and trailers is a layout problem before it is an equipment problem. We learned that again last year with a service outfit near Iowa City that had two big drive-through bays sized for fifth wheels and travel trailers, and exactly zero ability to get a chassis in the air. They were losing every engine-side job that came through the door — oil pan gaskets, transmission pans, exhaust work — because the only way to reach it was on their back on a creeper. This is the story of that first year, from the walkthrough and the layout argument through the first real oil pan gasket job, and what we would do differently.

The Walkthrough: Two Big Bays and No Place to Put a Lift

The building was 60 feet deep with 16-foot sidewalls and 14-foot overhead doors on both ends of each bay — great for pulling a trailer straight through, terrible for a lift, because everything was drive-through and nothing was dedicated. The owner’s first instinct was to put a two-post dead center in the north bay. We talked him out of it in about five minutes. Center-mounting kills your drive-through, and on an RV shop that drive-through is the whole reason the building exists. You cannot block it for a Silverado oil change when a 34-foot fifth wheel is due in at ten.

What we landed on was carving a third bay out of the depth. The north bay was 60 feet long and they never used more than 42 of it, so we put the lift in the back 18 feet with a knee wall of shelving separating it from the pull-through lane. Access came off the side of the building through an existing 10-foot man door opening they widened. That gave them a real service bay that does not fight the trailer traffic, and it gave the technician somewhere to leave tools and a parts cart without them getting run over. A car lift in a shared drive-through lane is a lift nobody uses, because the setup cost of clearing the lane is higher than the job is worth.

Choosing Capacity When You Also Work on Trailers

They wanted to know if the equipment should be able to pick up a dually or a tow vehicle, not just a passenger car. That is a fair question and it changed the spec. A half-ton or three-quarter-ton service truck with a fifth-wheel hitch and a toolbox in the bed lands well past 8,000 lb, so we specced 12,000 lb capacity with three-stage front arms. That also gave enough arm reach to get under a long-wheelbase crew cab without stretching the swing to its limits, which is where you start seeing pin and bushing wear early.

We did not try to make it a trailer lift. That is a common mistake — somebody buys one machine and hopes it covers passenger vehicles, tow rigs, and axle work on a travel trailer. Trailer axle service is better handled with a set of mobile column lifts or a good pair of jack stands and a bottle jack setup, and if the shop grows into it we will spec that separately. Trying to force one car lift to cover every vehicle on the property is how you end up with equipment that is marginal at everything. Install Day and the Slab Surprise

The slab was poured in two pours ten years apart, and the seam ran almost exactly where we wanted the driver-side column. We found it before install day because we drilled test holes during the site survey, which is the entire point of doing a site survey. Anchoring within a few inches of a cold joint is not acceptable; the concrete has no continuity across it and the anchors have nothing to grab under load. We shifted the whole footprint 22 inches toward the exterior wall, re-checked the approach angle for a long truck, and got 6 inches of good 3,000 psi concrete under both columns.

Install itself took most of a day plus part of the next morning. Columns set and anchored, overhead beam and hose routing, power drop from a new 220V circuit their electrician had already run, fluid fill, bleed, and then the part people skip: cycling it through full travel repeatedly, unloaded and then loaded, checking lock engagement at every position and verifying both carriages rise level. We had a lead from another state a while back where a guy installed his own unit and the carriages would not level — that is almost always an equalizer cable adjustment that never got done at commissioning. Twenty minutes of setup on install day prevents a service call and a scared technician later.

The First Real Job: An Oil Pan Gasket on a Tow Vehicle

Three weeks after commissioning, a customer’s three-quarter-ton tow rig came in seeping oil from the pan rail. Before the lift, that job goes to a dealer 30 minutes away and the shop makes nothing. Instead the technician had it in the air at chest height in under five minutes, dropped the skid plate, pulled the crossmember, unbolted the pan, and cleaned both mating surfaces standing up with good light. Total was about six hours including cure time on the sealant, and they billed it as a real job rather than turning it away.

What the owner noticed most was not the revenue. It was that his technician did not need to be talked into it. Oil pan gaskets on a truck are miserable work on the ground — you fight gravity, you cannot see the rail, and you end up wire-brushing overhead with debris in your face. On a car lift at working height it is tedious but not brutal, and the sealant bead is actually clean because you can see what you are laying down. Comeback risk drops accordingly. A year in, they have done seven pan gaskets and a stack of transmission pan services, and none have come back. That is a direct function of being able to see the work.

Workflow Changes That Made the Bay Actually Productive

The physical install was the easy part. The workflow took a few months to settle. They added a rolling drain and a used-oil caddy that lives in the bay, so nobody carries a drain pan across the shop. They mounted a hose reel for air off the overhead structure on the wall side rather than the beam, so it does not tangle with the lift. They put a parts shelf on the knee wall at column height, which sounds trivial until you count how many trips per job it saves. And they moved the tire and wheel work to that bay too, since the lift makes it faster than the floor ever was.

The bigger change was scheduling. RV and trailer work is seasonal in Iowa and lumpy — May and September are chaos, February is quiet. Chassis and light-truck service is steady all year. Having a dedicated car lift bay gave them something to sell in the slow months, and they started marketing oil service and brake work to their existing trailer customers, who all own tow vehicles. That was the real return. They did not need new customers; they needed a second reason for the customers they already had to come back. Twelve Months of Maintenance, Honestly Reported

Year one service was light, which is what we expect from properly commissioned equipment. Daily visual inspection of cables and arm pads, weekly lock function check, quarterly hydraulic fluid level and hose inspection, and an annual inspection with us. We greased the carriage slide blocks at the six-month mark and adjusted the equalizer cables once — they stretch slightly during break-in, and that is normal, not a defect. Arm pads were still fine at twelve months. Fluid was still clean.

The one thing we corrected was habit, not hardware. The technicians were raising the lift and not lowering it onto the locks before going underneath. Everybody knows the rule and everybody gets lazy about it, especially on a two-minute oil change. We put a decal at eye level on the column and the shop foreman started calling it out. That is the difference between equipment that lasts twenty years and equipment that hurts somebody in year three.
