This is where garages with trusses, ductwork, or a mezzanine above the bay run into trouble. Don’t measure the tallest point in the building and assume that number applies everywhere. That’s why we recommend a minimum bay width of 12 feet, and 14 feet is more comfortable if you plan to store tool chests, tire racks, or a second vehicle nearby.
Symmetric lifts need centered columns, while asymmetric lifts shift the columns to give more room around the driver’s door for entry and exit. If your bay is on the narrow side, an asymmetric configuration can make a real difference in how usable the space feels day to day. Depth: Plan for the Vehicle, Not Just the Lift

A full-size pickup or a work van can run 20 feet nose to tail, and you need clearance in front and behind for the vehicle plus room to walk around it comfortably. A shop that only works on sedans and small SUVs can get by with less depth than a shop that regularly lifts three-quarter-ton trucks. Floor Thickness and Concrete Requirements
Space isn’t only measured in feet and inches — it’s also measured in inches of concrete. A 2 post lift anchors into the slab and relies on that concrete to hold anchor bolts under real load, so most manufacturers require a minimum of 4 inches of solid, crack-free concrete, with some heavier-duty lifts calling for more. If your garage has a thin residential slab, control joints running through the anchor pattern, or visible cracking, that changes where the lift can go, and might require you to reposition the whole layout.
We check concrete condition on every install we quote, because bolting into bad concrete is one of the fastest ways to end up with a lift that isn’t safe. If your slab doesn’t meet spec, options include pouring a new pad in the bay or relocating the lift to a section of floor that does meet the requirement. This is a detail people skip when they’re focused purely on square footage, but it’s just as important as the floor space itself.
Column Spacing and Door Clearance
One space issue we see constantly: garage doors. If your columns sit too close to the door track, the door won’t open fully, or the lift arms will interfere with the door when it’s up. You need to account for both the width of the door opening and the swing radius of the arms when they’re extended at their widest.
Side walls matter too — if a column sits within a couple feet of a wall, you may not be able to swing the arm fully under certain vehicles, particularly longer trucks or vans where the arm needs to reach further forward or back. We map this out during a site visit rather than relying on a tape measure and a guess, because door tracks, side clearances, and column placement all interact in ways that are hard to picture from a floor plan alone.
